Schiavocampo Tapped For ‘Early Today,’ ‘First Look’

NBC News correspondent Mara Schiavocampo has been named the anchor of the early-morning NBC program “Early Today,” which airs at 4 AM ET and MSNBC’s early news show “First Look,” which airs at 5 AM ET.

She will continue in her role as a correspondent, contributing to all of the NBC News platforms and programs.

Schiavocampo started at NBC in 2007 as the digital correspondent for “NBC Nightly News,” taking on wider correspondent duties in 2010.

She starts next week on the early news programs. Lynn Berry, who currently anchors the programs, is moving on tweeting the following:

MSNBC Rethinking Dayside Strategy?

Inside Cable News has a number of slides from an online survey about MSNBC’s dayside programming. Among the questions are a number concerning straight news versus opinionated hosts.

Writes Spud:

It suggests to me that they’re still mulling going down that opinion dayside news path even after last year’s resounding ratings-reflective rebuke of a previous attempt at putting in POV anchors and shows on the dayside air. They wouldn’t be asking about these subjects if they weren’t still mulling doing yet another 180.

Also included in the survey were questions regarding MSNBC’s current lineup of on-air talent, including both anchors and contributors. Spud notes that Karen Finney and Lynn Berry, who are not currently regulars on dayside or primetime are mentioned in the survey.

Arrest in Times Square Bomb Attempt

Here’s how the cable news networks reported the overnight arrest of a suspect in the Times Square bomb plot.

MSNBC reported the arrest at 12:06amET with NBC’s Pete Williams breaking the news, along with WNBC anchor Lynn Berry who has been filling in on MNSBC. Williams was first to ID the suspect as Pakistani-American Faisal Shahzad. WNBC investigative reporter Jonathan Dienst as well as reporter Ida Siegel in Connecticut joined in MSNBC’s coverage before and after the 1:30amET news conference from Attorney General Eric Holder.

CNN interrupted a Larry King Live re-air at 12:21amET with the news, interestingly during an earlier interview about the plot with former DHS secretary Tom Ridge. CNN began a simulcast of CNN International with anchor Asieh Namdar and including CNN domestic correspondents Susan Candiotti and Deborah Feyerick at JFK, where Faisal was arrested around 11:45pmET, trying to get on a flight to Dubai.

Fox News reported the story at 12:25amET with Ainsley Earhardt, eventually being joined by anchor Gregg Jarrett just before 3amET. Correspondent Catherine Herridge and anchors Bret Baier and Greta Van Susteren contributed from Washington, D.C. by phone.
