‘World News Now’ Stage Manager to Give his Final Cue

Friday morning on World News Now (yes, you’ll either have to stay up really late, or wake up really early) the show will say goodbye to Peter Grimm who has been World News Now’s stage manager for the past 17 years.

Grimm, who we hear will sleep in until Noon on Monday, has been floor director with virtually every host in the early morning show’s eclectic anchor history. And as a tribute 21 of them will wish him off. That includes Ryan Owens 2007-2008, David Muir 2003-2004, Tamala Edwards 2003-2005, Alison Stewart 2000-2002, Liz Cho 2002-2003, Kevin Newman 1994-1996, Thalia Assuras 1993-1997, Bill Greenwood & Sheilah Kast 1993-1996, Derek McGinty 2001-2003, Asha Blake (pictured with Grimm) 1997-1998, Heather Cabot 2005, Ron Corning 2004-2006, Mark Mullen 1996-1998, Anderson Cooper 1999-2000, Andrea Stassou 2003, Taina Hernandez 2005-2007, Hari Sreenivasan 2006-2007, Melinda Wittstock 1998 and Juju Chang 1999-2000.

Also, Barry Mitchell will be in to do a special live polka for Peter, with the original “Mitchellettes” his back-up singers on the first WNN polka back in 1993. Set your DVRs kids! Or look for video tomorrow, which will include a certain creator of the show who has gone on to bigger, magic-er things at another network.

• Video after the jump…

Mark Mullen Back at ABC

Former NBC Chief Asia Correspondent Mark Mullen has found a new role at ABC News. He has been freelancing for the Los Angeles bureau of NewsOne, ABC’s affiliate service, since mid-December.

Mullen was laid off by NBC at the end of 2008, just after returning from a two-year stint in Beijing covering stories for NBC News, including the 2008 Summer Olympics. It was part of a major round of layoffs made by NBC Universal that December.

From 1996 to the end of 1998, Mullen was a correspondent and anchor for ABC’s “World News Now.”

Life After A Layoff: TVNewsers Navigate A Career Detour

Alissa Krinsky
TVNewser Contributor

“There’s life after whatever job you’re in now,” says former HLN anchor Linda Stouffer.

Stouffer was laid off in December after 12 years at the network.

She was not alone. Dozens of tvnewsers, on air and off, were let go at the end of 2008, as the industry reacted to a turbulent economy. Kevin Corke, John Larson and Mark Mullen of NBC lost their jobs. So did CNN’s Kathleen Koch and Rusty Dornin, HLN’s Carrie Lee, and numerous other journalists at those networks and at CBS News, too. ABC News laid off 35 staffers earlier this year.

Stouffer may have been in good company, but she was still looking to get back to work.

And she did. Three months after leaving HLN, she was picked up by Atlanta’s ABC station, WSB-TV. Stouffer is reporting part-time, hoping “to have some anchor opportunities down the line.”

Good news after an initial jolt. “Job loss is an earthquake of an experience,” says Stouffer, who first took time to “take stock, to see what I wanted to do next.”

It was her “big think.”

After also being laid off in December, former CNN Justice Department/Supreme Court correspondent Kelli Arena has had the chance to reflect, too.

“I’m doing great,” she says. “I had been working non-stop until now.

“The opportunity to just slow down, and take a breath, and not be ruled by my Blackberry is a tremendously different life than the one I had before,” she says.

Who’s Covering the Obama White House?

With David Gregory‘s promotion to “Meet the Press”, NBC needs to fill the senior White House correspondent role for the network. ABC named Jake Tapper as chief White House correspondent the day after the election; CBS named Chip Reid to their post a few days later.

An NBC News spokesperson tells TVNewser an announcement is expected “in the coming weeks.”

The news comes less than a week after a round of NBC layoffs cut correspondents John Larson and Mark Mullen from the L.A. bureau.

NBCU To Cut 500 Jobs, Layoffs Begin at NBC News Bureaus

Breaking: TVNewser has learned NBC Universal will be cutting up to 500 jobs in a round of layoffs which are now underway at all levels of the company — television, film and parks. That amounts to about 3% of the workforce. An insider with knowledge of the situation says the cuts are expected to continue into next week.

The NBC News bureaus in Dallas and Los Angeles (Burbank) are already experiencing cuts, with the insider saying Dallas will experience more layoffs than in Burbank. Among those losing their jobs, NBC News correspondent Don Teague who has been with the network since 2002.

This is all part of an effort to cut $500 million from the NBCU budget announced by company president Jeff Zucker in October.

Last month, TVNewser reported the network was offering buyouts to “virtually everyone.” If enough employees did not accept the offer, layoffs were to be the next step.

…Developing…

> Update: Los Angeles correspondents John Larson, who reported for many years for Dateline and Mark Mullen, who just returned to Burbank after a nearly two-year reporting run for NBC in Beijing, are among the cuts. As many as seven people in Burbank have been let go, including Heather Allan who’s been with NBC more than 30 years. Allan was the bureau chief for NBC News special events which involved coordinating Olympics coverage for the news division.

The News of the Games

The AP’s David Bauder writes about what might be in store for the networks of NBC Universal next week with the Michael Phelps show near an end. Bauder also writes about the off-the-field news and how NBC has reported it:

During the first week, NBC has done little to upset its hosts. Two of the biggest stories — the stabbing of two Americans by a suicidal man and revelation that a cute girl singing during the opening ceremony was a lip-syncher — were covered during the daytime. But the stabbings were only briefly mentioned during prime-time and the lip-synching wasn’t mentioned at all. Attendance problems at venues also hasn’t drawn notice.

Except for a Tom Brokaw retrospective on opening night and Bob Costas’ thorough interview with President Bush, the focus has been almost entirely on sport. Mary Carillo has kept her travelogues light. Mark Mullen‘s hard look at China’s effort to groom Olympic stars was shown on the “Nightly News.”
