ABC’s Diane Sawyer will broadcast “World News” from the Vatican beginning this evening. Sawyer is joined in Rome by Terry Moran, Josh Elliott, David Wright, Cokie Roberts, Rob Claiborne and Cecilia Vega. The network plans to broadcast special reports for the cardinals’ twice-daily votes.

CBS’ Scott Pelley will also be live from Vatican City starting today. Norah O’Donnell and Charlie Rose will host “CBS This Morning” live from Vatican City, with CBS News correspondents Allen Pizzey and Mark Phillips contributing to coverage.

Chris Jansing and Lester Holt will lead coverage for NBC News and MSNBC from Rome.  Anne Thompson, Keir Simmons, Claudio Lavangna and George Weigel will also contribute to NBC-MSNBC coverage. Both networks will provide special reports for the cardinals votes. Jansing and Holt also led coverage of the last papal conclave in 2005, which Jansing talks about in a lengthy Q&A with Inside Cable News.

On Fox News, Shepard Smith will anchor from Rome. He will be joined by correspondents Amy Kellogg and Lauren Green to cover the conclave. Bryan Llenas will be reporting for Fox News Latino.

Chris Cuomo and Anderson Cooper will lead CNN’s coverage from Rome. Ben Wedeman, Miguel Marquez, Dan Rivers and Becky Anderson will report, along with CNN en Español’s Adriana Hauser and Jose Levy. CNN Vatican analyst John Allen will also contribute to coverage.

NBC News correspondent/MSNBC anchor Chris Jansing, who also covered the last Papal transition will be leaving this afternoon for several days of reporting/anchoring and will also cover the election of the next pope. In a Media Beat interview, Jansing told us covering the death of John Paul II and election of Benedict was the most fulfilling assignment of her career: “It was just an extraordinary global event and also had some personal meaning to me.” Jansing will join NBC Rome correspondent Claudio Lavagna already on scene. Richard Engel will also report.

CBS has Allen Pizzey in Rome and London correspondent Mark Phillips will be joining him.

“GMA” Weekend Anchor Dan Harris, along with David Wright, Jeffrey Kofman, and Nick Schifrin will be reporting from the Vatican. Wright covered the 2005 transition. ABC’s Cokie Roberts, whose mother served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, will provide a historical perspective.

CNN’s Rome-based correspondent Ben Wedeman will cover and will be joined by Jim Bitterman, Max Foster and Jose Levy for CNN en Español are all en route.

NBC spent 11:02 on the story, leading off with chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel on set in New York. Then reports from Adrienne Mong, the only U.S. network correspondent in Misrata, Libya, Jim Miklaszewski was at the Pentagon, Andrea Mitchell had a look-back on Gaddafi’s life and Brian Williams had an on-set interview with a counter-terrorism official.

ABC’s “World News” anchored by George Stephanopoulos spent 10:45 on the story, leading off Christiane Amanpour on set. Amanpour had the most recent U.S. network interview with Gaddafi in late February as the insurgency was flaring up. Later on “Nightline” Amanpour had an interview with an American woman who had worked for the Gaddafi family up until just a few months ago. She’d set up the Amanpour-Gaddafi interview. Jake Tapper reported from the White House, David Muir talked with a man who lost his brother in the Pan Am 103 bombing and Barbara Walters was on set to talk about her interview with the “Mad Dog of the Middle East” in 1989. Stephanopoulos added he’d interviewed Gaddafi in 2003.

The “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” spent 10:58 on the story, including the lead which was tracked by Pelley and a Skype interview with freelance American journalist Holly Pickett who rode the ambulance with Gaddafi in his final moments. Kitty Logan reported from Tripoli, David Martin was at the Pentagon, Mark Phillips had a look-back and Jim Axelrod reported on the families of the survivors of the Pan Am 103 bombing.

The June 26 broadcast of “Sunday Morning” — which focused largely on the American economy — drew 4.15M total viewers. Year-to-date, the show is up +4% in total viewers.

CBS “Sunday Morning” airs from 9 – 10:30 a.m. on the east coast. Tomorrow’s program includes Ben Tracy reporting on Prince William and Kate Middleton’s trip to California, as well as a profile on Tom Jones by correspondent Mark Phillips.

CBS News EVP Paul Friedman made the trip to London earlier this week — to a CBS News operation once headed by Edward R. Murrow — to deliver the bad news.

Gone are cameraman Siphiwo Ralo, a South African who, in the early ’90′s, helped the network get access to the ghettos as apartheid was coming to an end. He’d been with CBS since 1985. Also gone, Nick Turner, who learned of the changes via phone. He is undergoing cancer treatment and not working at the moment. Cameraman Massimo Mariani and sound man Andy Stevenson are also being let go. The men have covered war zones in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Bosnia and beyond.

While two photographers will remain on staff, London producers will be doing more shooting for correspondents Mark Phillips and Elizabeth Palmer. Separate from this week’s news, correspondent Richard Roth, who has been in CBS’ London bureau since 1998, is leaving the network.

The CBS News London bureau was shaken to the core on Memorial Day 2006 when camerman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan were killed in Baghdad while on assignment with former CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier.

The crews are being given a year’s salary and could freelance for CBS in the future, but sources tell us they don’t expect much work.

And CBS is not alone when it comes to international downsizing.
