Behind the Scenes at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

For the White House Correspondents’ Association, it’s a night to celebrate the free press. For Joel McHale, it’s a night where “a guy like me can stand before the president, the press and Patrick Duffy, and tell jokes without severe repercussions.” And for TVNewser, it’s a night where the people we cover all year — executives, producers, reporters and anchors from every major network — are all together in the same room: the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which we attended this year as a guest of ABC News.

Our night began outside the entrance to the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where we overheard now-NBC News correspdonent Cynthia McFadden ask for directions to the ABC News party. We followed her in, and a few minutes later we were chatting with Diane Sawyer, who told us she always looks forward to the Correspondents’ Dinner, and James Goldston, who said he was pleased with his first few weeks as ABC News president. In the back of the room, Fox News anchors Ainsley Earhardt and Kimberly Guilfoyle posed for a picture with Sofia Vergara; Earhardt told us afterwards that she’s “having a blast” anchoring “Fox & Friends First,” despite the crazy hours. We spotted Katie Couric chatting with former Presidential candidate Jon Huntsman and his daughter, Abby Huntsman, who is a co-host of MSNBC’s “The Cycle.”

Wolf Blitzer made the rounds with Diane Lane. We saw NBC’s Savannah Guthrie and ABC’s Lara Spencer snap a picture with Tony Goldwyn from “Scandal.” We spent a few minutes with Rebecca Jarvis, and chatted with Alicia Menendez about her participation in the TVNewser Show as well as her Twitter habit.

On the way into the ballroom, we spotted Guthrie and her husband, Mike Feldman, chatting with Bret Baier and his wife Amy. We saw Jessica Simpson and her fiance, Eric Johnson, chatting with fans. Simpson’s ex, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo, was also at the WHCD as a guest of Fox News. Read more

Jake Tapper Among DC’s ’50 Most Beautiful’

The Hill released its 2013 “50 Most Beautiful” feature today, and a number of TV news staffers made the list.

Leading the pack was CNN anchor Jake Tapper, who clocked in at number 11. His inclusion actually came up before his program this afternoon.

“Not news,” Tapper quipped to Brooke Baldwin. “I think we can establish that the good people at The Hill are sometimes wearing beer goggles.”

Other TV news notables include ABC News correspondent Claire Shipman, ABC News Digital White House correspondent Mary Bruce, and C-SPAN production assistants (and twins) Sara Zou and Chellie Zou.

Two Newsers Crack THR ‘Next Gen’ List

Two TV news staffers made The Hollywood Reporter‘s “Next Gen 2012″ list, which profiles up and coming movers and shakers in Hollywood and the entertainment business.

ABC News White House producer Mary Bruce made the cut, as did MSNBC “Rachel Maddow Show” senior producer Mike Yarvitz. The pair were asked about their accomplishements, habits and guilty pleasures.

From Bruce:

BIG BREAK: ABC News Radio’s Ann Comptonrecommended I apply for a job as an ABC news desk assistant. She said it wasn’t glamorous but would get my foot in the door. It did.

Boudreau, who joined ABC from CNN in November, and Bruce were in a car that was rear-ended by a semi Monday morning.

Doctors will continue to monitor Boudreau and Bruce. But both are expected to make a full recovery.

ABC News correspondent Abbie Boudreau (left) and her producer, Mary Bruce are recovering after being involved in a serious car accident near Richmond, Virginia this morning.

Boudreau and Bruce were on their way to cover a U.S. military-related story when the car they were in was rear-ended by a semi. Boudreau, who joined ABC News from CNN last month, and Washington, DC-based Bruce were rushed to a hospital in Richmond where Boudreau is still being treated at this hour. Bruce was treated and released earlier.

In a note to staff, obtained by TVNewser, ABC News president David Westin writes, “our colleagues from the Washington Bureau are with them to make sure that they have everything that they need.”
