CNN Removes iReport Saying Missouri Patrol Captain is Gang Member

A CNN iReport that mistook a fraternity hand sign Missouri Patrol Captain Ron Johnson made for him being a gang member has been taken down.

The Washington Post reports the iReport suggested Johnson was making hand signals members of the group the Bloods use (shown below).

The sign is actually the greeting for the fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi, which Johnson belongs to.

“iReport is a social network for news. A small number of user submissions are approved for use on air and online,” a CNN spokesman tells TVNewser. “The iReport in question had not been vetted, was labeled as “NOT VERIFIED BY CNN,” and was removed shortly after being flagged by the community.”

Jeff Zucker: CNNMoney Able to Bridge TV and Digital ‘Incredibly Well’

CNN MoneyTVNewser was at New York City’s Gansevoort Hotel last night as CNN officially celebrated its sole ownership of CNNMoney, which recently separated from Fortune and Money.

“We’re uniquely positioned to report on financial, money, media, and luxury news because of our prowess across both digital and television,” CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker told TVNewser at the event.

“CNNMoney is able to bridge both mediums incredibly well, and given our digital strength in particular, I think we’re really well positioned to increase the presence of CNNMoney across television, and blow it out even more.”

And that increase across TV is already underway. During his speech at the event, Zucker gave a shout-out to “Early Start” co-anchor Christine Romans, recognizing her as the new host of “CNN Money” Saturdays at 2pmET. The show, which was previously titled “Your Money,” premiered under its new name two weeks ago.

“Our goal is to make you fluent in money, everything that’s happening in business, but at the same time how it pertains to you and your own finances,” Romans told us.

And expect a healthy marriage between money and politics: “Nothing goes better together than money and politics,” VP of CNNMoney and Politics for digital Ed O’Keefe told us, suggesting coverage will cross-pollinate politics during the 2016 election season.

And you’ve all been waiting… who’s the mysterious hand holding the money clip above? Photo credit goes to CNN’s Senior Director of PR, Matt Dornic.

NBC News Radio Expands, Replaces CNN Radio Nationwide

In an deal announced today with leading radio distributor Dial Global, NBC News will expand its radio offerings from 18 hourly reports each weekday to top and bottom of the hour updates, 24/7.

NBC News Radio will also now be distributed to radio stations reaching 225 million people nationwide. These stations can now offer live simulcasts of breaking news from NBC and MSNBC, and reports from top NBC News correspondents as well as “Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” and “Meet the Press” moderator David Gregory.

With this new NBC deal, Dial Global, which merged with Westwood One last fall, is dropping distribution of CNN Radio. CNN says it will end radio production April 1, but “will continue to create original audio news content for distribution channels including CNN Newsource, the CNN Wire, and CNN.com,” a spokesperson says. As a result, the CNN spokesperson tells TVNewser, some jobs may be cut. Six CNN Radio correspondents will remain on staff and radio programming will continue to be distributed internationally.

Matt Dornic Moves to CNN Digital PR

One of our fishes is on the move.

Matt Dornic, a FishbowlDC contributor, and before that co-editor since February 2009, is joining the CNN public relations group working with the digital teams: CNN.com, CNN Mobile and Apps. Dornic is also leaving his day job at public affairs firm Quinn Gillespie.

Dornic will work out of CNN’s New York offices, and split time in Atlanta working with the CNN digital leads KC Estenson and Susan Grant. He’ll be finishing up at Quinn Gillespie and FishbowlDC this month and will join CNN on December 5. Dornic replaces Jennifer Martin who joined Apple public relations in June.

Betsy will be posting a FBDC contributor job later today on the blog.

Good luck Matt!

A Look Back at WHCD Weekend, With FBDC

mmm_2-3.gifToday on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu podcast we were joined by FishbowlDC editor Matt Dornic.

Dornic gave us all the details about the weekend’s big festivities — the White House Correspondents Association Dinner Saturday night. We talk about the parties, the jokes and more. And what were the big stories D.C. will be talking about today?

One thing that wasn’t talked about — the recession. “It was just as glamorous and just as exciting as any other year,” said Dornic.

He also described his encounter with FNC’s Greta Van Susteren and Todd Palin. “Greta’s charming and incredibly intelligent and she was a blast to be around, and Todd Palin was wonderful as well,” he said. “I think it was a good move on the Palin’s part to have Todd join Fox News since Sarah was unable to attend.”

And Dornic revealed his “politi-crush”: Meghan McCain (“She was absolutely phenomenal”).

Also discussed from the newsfeed: WSJ’s micro-payments and Hulu’s success.
