’48 Hours’ Report on International Adoption Practices Took Years to Investigate

Owens 2Tonight’s “48 Hours” report on the dark side of international adoptions is the result of years of investigation by Maureen Maher and the CBS newsmagazine’s production team.

“Several years ago, we investigated questionable adoptions in Samoa and the impact of that report inspired us to keep digging into the topic. I am adopted, so this is a subject of great interest to me,” Maher told TVNewser. “Adoption is an amazing, wonderful opportunity for all parties when done correctly. However, our reporting over the past few years has revealed that some families have faced extreme challenges when attempting to adopt from other countries.”

The “48 Hours” investigation, which airs tonight at 10pmET, focuses on a small adoption agency in Florida. Maher follows the Owens family (pictured) as they attempt to adopt children from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and another woman as she goes through the process to adopt children from Guatemala. As part of the investigation, Maher also interviewed the birth mother of the Guatemalan children, who tells the harrowing story of how both children were taken from her.

“At the heart of what we do at ’48 Hours’ is to report on stories about normal families who have been put into extraordinary situations,” Maher said. “And that is certainly true for this week’s broadcast, ‘Perilous Journey.’”

’48 Hours Mystery’ Continues to Top Saturday Nights

The venerable CBS News show “48 Hours Mystery” continues to rule Saturday nights on broadcast TV.

Last Saturday, the show was the most-watched of the night drawing 6.78 million total viewers. It was also number one in the A25-54 and A18-49 demos. Compared to the same night last year, the show was up +13% in households, +6% in A25-54 and +8% in A18-49. It was the show best performance since December.

The broadcast featured correspondent Maureen Maher’s report, “The Writing on the Wall,” about a triple homicide in a small Illinois town. Christopher Coleman (above), head of security for well-known televangelist Joyce Meyer, was found guilty of strangling his wife, Sheri, and their two young sons, Gavin and Garett.

Tonight’s episode features Peter Van Sant‘s report titled “Ransom” about the kidnapped son of a millionaire and the wild ransom note that followed.

‘Dr. Phil,’ ’48 Hours’ In Crossover Episodes

Typically it is primetime entertainment programs that have crossover episodes (remember when Laurence Fishburne appeared on all three CSI’s in one week???). This weekend however, CBS News and CBS TV Distribution are doing a crossover of their own.

On “Dr. Phil” today, host Phil McGraw will examine the odd tale of the Bay Area “P.I. Moms,” with special guest “48 Hours Mystery” correspondent Maureen Maher.

Then, on Saturday night, “48 Hours Mystery” will look into the case, featuring a special guest appearance by Dr. Phil McGraw.
