Will Katie Couric’s Morning Return Give Rise to GMA?

ABC went dancing with its star today, and she didn’t miss a step.

Katie Couric’s guest-hosting stint on ‘Good Morning America’ came off with nary a hiccup. Despite a six-year absence from the a.m. game, she seamlessly picked up where she left off at “Today,” displaying the goofy humor and warmth that made her a star.

She laughed. She danced. She cracked wise. What’s not to love?

Did we say love? Like a shark at a shipwreck, “GMA” is moving in for the kill against “Today.” With only 137,000 viewers separating them, according to the latest Nielsen ratings, “GMA” is counting on a week of Couric to end her alma mater’s 16-year dominance.

In response to ABC’s massive promotion, “Today” announced last week that Monday’s show would feature a “legend.” (I’m a big Meredith Vieria fan, but she hardly fits the category.) Sarah Palin guest hosts tomorrow; irony abounds. It was Couric, then with CBS, who derailed Palin in ’08 by asking the vice-presidential candidate what newspapers she read.

ABC made sure Couric’s visit was treated by her colleagues like a coronation. Her co-hosts were positively giddy, and every correspondent welcomed her. At 7:21 a.m., she told an adoring George Stephanopoulos that she was “starting to relax.”

Couric did several taped bits about her return to morning TV, beginning with one in which she ran around her apartment in her jammies and drank endless cups of coffee to stay awake for her debut. In another, her driver mistakenly took her to NBC before heading to ABC’s Times Square studio.

The most blatant, self-serving skit revolved around Couric’s love fest with ABC’s hit “DWTS,” now in Week 3. She camped around backstage with host Tom Bergeron. She lusted for mucho-macho

Matt Lauer to Sarah Palin: ‘What Are You Doing to Prepare? Are You Reading Some Newspapers?’

Sarah Palin phoned in to the “Today” show this morning as she makes her way across the country to New York where she will co-host tomorrow’s show.

Matt Lauer asked, “What are you doing to prepare? Are you reading some newspapers?,” a reference to Palin’s interviews with Katie Couric in 2008. “That’s a fine how-do-you-do. That’s a great start. Here we go,” said Palin laughing.

Palin will appear mostly in the 8am hour including taking part in “The Professionals” panel.

“Hopefully we won’t bore viewers with too much in-depth political talk,” said Palin, then boring viewers with political talk about “energy prices and some national security issues that have to be addressed and I think no matter what it is that we discuss it’s going to turn into a bit of a political discussion.”

“I appreciate NBC’s boldness in having me on,” said Palin, adding, “Doesn’t it kind of reflect that diversity of opinion that I hear that you all espouse?…”

“Or desperation,” said Meredith Vieria to laughs. Video after the jump…

Meredith Vieira’s Final ‘Today:’ The Write-ups

TV news writers are summing up Meredith Vieria‘s final “Today” show this morning. The highlight had to be the phenomenal live multi-camera, dancing, singing, rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” which brought out the entire “Today” crew.

USA Today:

It was a “blubberfest” on the Today show this morning (Hoda Kotb’s words, not ours) as the team celebrated Meredith Vieira’s last day.

Associated Press:

The broadcast made room for news about the nation’s severe-heat advisories and scandal-ridden Congressman Anthony Weiner’s Twitter woes. But throughout the show, tributes and highlight reels honored Vieira’s “Today” tenure.

NY Daily News:

The only surprise after all the “I love you guys” moments was that the 9-10 a.m. hour didn’t show them all sitting around a campfire in Rockefeller Plaza, having a pajama party and toasting s’mores. But if the tribute went over the top, it was mostly in a good way, and a couple of small things about the show underscored why, in this case, it worked.

Ann Curry takes over as Matt Lauer‘s co-anchor tomorrow. Our interview with Curry, tomorrow morning on TVNewser.
