CNN’s ‘Newsroom International’ Getting a New Name: ‘Around The World’

CNN continues to tweak its lineup, and the latest changes are coming to the 12-1PM hour. As we reported over the weekend, CNN International anchor Michael Holmes will be joining the program as co-anchor alongside Suzanne Malveaux.

Now, CNN says the name of the hour will be changed from “Newsroom International” to “Around the World.”

The new name will go into effect Monday, February 25.

The Ticker Returns to CNN

The Ticker, which was replaced years ago by the Flipper, has returned to CNN. The lower third scroll of news returned at NoonET on “Newsroom International.”

Insiders tell us this is another Jeff Zucker move. The new CNN president has been making his mark on programming, hiring and the overall look of CNN. Today, the NoonET hour of “Newsroom Interenational” also became a co-anchored show, with Michael Holmes joining Suzanne Malveaux at the anchor desk. The new ticker is a scrawl, blue, with white font.

The Flipper had been a part of CNN’s look since 2008. At the time, CNN VP Bart Feder said the Flipper is “easier to read, understand and absorb the information.” What do you think?

Michael Holmes Named Co-Anchor Of CNN’s ‘Newsroom International’

CNN has named Michael Holmes the co-anchor of “Newsroom International,” the edition of “CNN Newsroom” that airs from 12-1PM ET on CNN/U.S. He will anchor alongside Suzanne Malveaux.

“I suppose we do share the same passion, and that is field work and international news, it is what we do, isn’t it?” Holmes said on “Newsroom” Friday afternoon, talking to Malveaux.

Holmes is currently an anchor and correspondent for CNN International, based in Atlanta. He will continue as the anchor of “International Desk” on CNNI. An Australian native, Holmes joined CNNI in 1996, and has reported from all over the world, including covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was a reporter fro Australia’s Nine Network before joining CNN.

Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett To Report Live In Primetime For CNN

CNN will be keeping its usual primetime lineup on tonight to cover Sandy, and will be live until the worst of the storm passes, whenever that may be. Anchors Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett will be reporting in the field tonight across primetime. CNN International will be simulcasting CNN/U.S. from 11AM-2PM and again starting at 4 PM.

Update: HLN is blowing up its primetime lineup to provide hurricane coverage. Those details are also after the jump.

Hurricane Sandy Coverage Plans

TV news organizations are gearing up for covering Sandy. There is still lots of uncertainty but here is what we know so far. We will update this story as we get more information.

Cable:

The Weather Channel not surprisingly, has a slew of coverage planned. “Wake Up With Al” will air this weekend starting at 5:30 AM, and 5 AM starting next week.

CNN Switches Up 12 PM Format, Launches ‘Newsroom International’

During the work day (9am-4pmET), CNN has long relied on “CNN Newsroom” to bridge the gap between its morning shows and “The Situation Room.” Now the network seems to be switching it up a little bit, tweaking the long-running format. At NoonET today, CNN launched a new hour of “CNN Newsroom” called “Newsroom International.”

The hour looks a lot like the typical “CNN Newsroom” programming, but instead of talking U.S. politics or business, the hour focuses on international news and events. Given what is happening in Syria, and the elections in Egypt and Greece, the timing for the new format couldn’t have been better.

Suzanne Malveaux, who anchors “CNN Newsroom” from 12-2pmET, also handles “International Newsroom.” She will be joined by CNN International anchors Richard Quest, Michael Holmes and Hala Gorani.

CNN has been making tweaks to its programming lineup over the last few weeks, most notably canceling “John King USA” and adding an extra hour of “Situation Room.”

Cable Nets Go Live as Final U.S. Convoy Leaves Iraq

At 11:28pmET, U.S. cable news networks broke into coverage as the final U.S. combat troops crossed from Iraq into Kuwait, creating a lasting image for the end to the 8-and-a-half-year war, which was officially declared over on Thursday. CNN/U.S. and CNNI simulcast coverage with Hala Gorani and Don Lemon co-anchoring. Michael Holmes reported from Kuwait, Arwa Damon from Baghdad and Martin Savidge, who traveled the 5-and-a-half hours with the American convoy, reported by phone (and later, around 12:27amET, via livestream from inside an MRAP vehicle) after crossing into Kuwait. CNN/U.S. stayed live until MidnightET (CNNI until 12:30amET) and included interviews with soldiers at Camp Virginia, Kuwait.

On Fox News Geraldo Rivera and Greg Palkot reported live from Kuwait, with the final MRAP truck crossing over at 11:38pmET / 7:38am along the Kuwait/Iraq border. “I have tears in my eyes, so emotional,” said Rivera, who is on his 11th trip to the region. Fox News wrapped coverage at 11:46pm.

MSNBC produced a 4-minute special report with Richard Engel live in Kuwait. Engel too, traveled with the U.S. convoy. “So much has transpired when they crossed this berm in 2003 going North,” said Engel. “They were on their way to topple a dictator. Now they are crossing this berm again. The dictator has been toppled and the troops are going home.”

Foreign Correspondents, Both Trapped and Free, File Reports from Tripoli

The situation in Tripoli, Libya continues to evolve every hour, and the result has been a series of compelling reports from foreign correspondents in-country.

Update: CNN’s Sara Sidner is outside of Gadhaffi’s compound, and is reporting that rebels have captured the building and are celebrating. She says she has seen files that the rebels have removed from the compound.

CNN and CNN International are going into co=production with Libya coverage, with Suzanne Malveaux and Michael Holmes anchoring.

On “AC360″ last night, CNN’s Matthew Chance–who is trapped in the Rixos Hotel along with a handful of other foreign journalists–told Anderson Cooper about a strange appearance by Colonel Gadhaffi’s son Saif at the complex:

On MSNBC, Richard Engel has been live all morning on a rooftop overlooking Gadhaffi’s compound. After some stray bullets were fired not far from his location, he would put on a thick armored helmet for future live-shots:

Covering the Imminent Fall of Tripoli

CNN is going into overdrive tonight covering what Libyan rebels hope is the imminent fall of Tripoli. CNN is simulcasting CNN International programming anchored by Hala Gorani and Michael Holmes with Wolf Blitzer in D.C. Correspondent Matthew Chance is reporting from inside a hotel in Tripoli where Gadhafi government minders had been monitoring the foreign press, but have left. During one short report, Chance said to Gorani, “At the moment we really don’t know what’s going to happen next. Hala, I think I’m going to have to leave it there.” Meanwhile, Sara Sidner is reporting from the road on her way to Tripoli. The plan is to stay live throughout the night and into the morning.

Fox News is also providing extended coverage with Harris Faulkner anchoring, preempting “Huckabee,” with contributions from Sky News.

MSNBC is covering the news during updates of regular programming.

On the broadcast evening newscasts, only NBC News had their own correspondent in Tripoli. Richard Engel appeared live with a group of Libyan rebels, some of whom walked up to 15 miles to the capital earlier today. CBS News used a reporter from Sky News and ABC had a phoner from a BBC reporter while ABC’s Jeffrey Kofman reported from the Tunisia/Libya border.
