In case you aren’t caught up: over the weekend the President played golf in Florida with Tiger Woods, among other people. The press was not allowed in to see them play. White House Correspondents Association president (and Fox News correspondent) Ed Henry went public with press complaints about the incident, saying it was emblematic of a larger issue at the White House.

Henry is speaking out on behalf of the WHCA, talking to Politico about the issue, and appearing on competitor “NBC Nightly News” to talk about the dispute. Henry’s FNC affiliation was not included in the chyron.

Politico also published an in-depth, reported piece from Mike Allen and Jim VandeHai titled “Obama, The Puppet Master.” The report looks at the administration’s views on the press, including Obama’s preference to talk to TV reporters over print reporters, and how staffers keep reporters at arms length and beyond:

This is Karl’s second go and putting together Playbook, the first without Allen virtually looking over his shoulder. The prep started last night, Karl tells TVNewser, “followed by an intense few hours of total-immersion into the day’s news beginning at 4am.”

“It’s great fun to do for a day, but mind-boggling to think Mike has done it for 990 consecutive days,” Karl says.

While declaring, “Republicans were waging a campaign to tear the president down,” images of Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh flash on the screen.

“Then there was the victory no one saw coming,” says the film’s announcer, while showing clips from NBC News’s special report from Brian Williams the night Osama Bin Laden was killed, with more clips from CNN, CBS and ABC.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” today, Joe Scarborough asked, “Really? That’s it, huh? So is Fox’s slogan going to be — or Mitt Romney‘s slogan going to be ‘Balanced?’ I mean, he’s taking MSNBC’s slogan!”

“Lean forward was taken,” said Politico’s Mike Allen.

From birthers to tea parties to town halls and – not to mention President Obama’s speech last week to school children and the background of former White House aide Van Jones – issues initially dismissed or missed entirely by the national media have burst, if only fleetingly, onto the national agenda after relentless coverage on Fox News, talk radio and in the blogosphere.

The most recent case of the divide between the right and the so-called mainstream media came yesterday when “World News” anchor Charles Gibson was caught off guard when asked about the ACORN tapes while on a Chicago radio show. Gibson added that “maybe this is just one you leave to the cables.”

“World News” EP Jon Banner tells Politico, “It’s a very different editorial process when you have 24 hours to fill as opposed to 22 minutes,” Banner said, explaining why the show hadn’t reported on the recent ACORN revelations.

“There’s no ideological filter that goes on,” says Chris Isham, Washington bureau chief for CBS News on his network’s coverage. “If it’s a good story, it’s a good story.”

“Clearly, Fox is going to be more aggressive on a story like that, initially, then other media organizations,” Isham says.

Barone said, “Journalists trashed Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republicans’ vice presidential nominee, because ‘she did not abort her Down syndrome baby.’”

In an email to Politico, Barone said he “was attempting to be humorous and, as many in public do, went over the line.

“Sorry for that. I was trying to focus on press hostility to Palin.”

At the beginning of the talk Barone did an informal poll about cable news preferences, and found the results to be approximately 55% for CNN, 35% for MSNBC and 10% for FNC. Barone has been a contributor with FNC since 1998.

Politico’s Mike Allen reports some in the McCain camp think Powell will officially endorse Sen. Barack Obama on the program, but those close to Powell are not saying.

And neither is NBC. A spokesperson tells TVNewser, “We are looking forward to the General sharing his views on a variety of issues in the news.”

Politico’s Mike Allen reports, of the three network anchors covering the overseas trip Katie Couric will go first, interviewing Obama on Tuesday “in a country that the campaign does not want named for security reasons.” Charles Gibson gets Obama on Wednesday, and Brian Williams will go Thursday. Allen writes, at least one publication is not represented on the Obama press plane:

Forty journalists, including such leading correspondents as Dan Balz of The Washington Post, will be aboard his plane for next week’s swing through Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and England.

The campaign received 200 requests for press seats on the plane.

Among those for whom there was no room was Ryan Lizza, Washington correspondent of The New Yorker. The campaign, which was furious about the magazine’s satirical cover this week, cited space constraints in turning him away.

Chris Wallace (who took over hosting FN Sunday in 2003 when Snow decided he wanted to be, as Wallace explains, “the next Rush Limbaugh,”) opened the broadcast with an image from the Newseum, where Tony Snow is being remembered on a giant screen in the atrium. He then aired an interview with Vice President Cheney, taped late yesterday at the VP’s residence. Cheney praised Snow’s service to the president, he lauded his commitment to the fight against cancer and talked about what the future might have held. “I think he could have been a great candidate if he’d wanted to do that. I think Tony had an unlimited future ahead of him,” Cheney said.

Limbaugh phoned in and, while reflecting on what Snow meant to the conservative movement, took the time to criticize AP reporter Douglas Daniel for what he wrote about Snow:

With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster’s good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook — if not always a command of the facts — he became a popular figure around the country to the delight of his White House bosses.

“Now, why in the world say something like that on his occasion when it isn’t the case in the first place?,” Limbaugh said. “I think it’s because he took a new tack as a press secretary.”
