Surprise 50th Party for Joe Scarborough

Mika Brzezinski, MSNBC president Phil Griffin and the UAE’s Ambassador to the U.S. Yousef Al Otaiba threw a 50th birthday bash for Joe Scarborough last night in Washington, DC.

According to Politico, Scarborough thought they were coming to D.C. for a speech, instead, on the rooftop of 101 Constitution Ave., Scarborough was treated to a “this is your life” with friends and family. “We have your life covered here completely, from Boston to Los Angeles to Florida to New York to Washington. Everybody is here,” said Brzezinski.

“You can sit back and relax and just hang with your family because, actually, we are going to talk tonight — and you’re not going to say a word.”

Among the guests: NBC/MSNBC’s Willie Geist, David Gregory, Luke Russert, Mike Barnicle, Andrea Mitchell, Kelly O’Donnell and Lawrence O’Donnell. “Morning Joe” EP Alex Korson and former EP Chris Licht and Licht’s boss’s boss at CBS, Jeff Fager. Also, Walter Isaacson, Dan Senor, Nicolle Wallace, Bob Woodward and more.

TVNewsers Meet in Boston to Remember Tip O’Neill

,TVNewser was in Boston this weekend as several TV news anchors and contributors took a trip down memory lane.

They gathered at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library for a panel discussion on the life of Tip O’Neill, the legendary former Speaker of the House who passed away in 1994. Sunday marked 100 years since O’Neill’s birth.

Charlie Gibson – who covered O’Neill in the eighties for ABC News – moderated the forum, which featured reminiscing and story-telling among those who also shared the Tip beat back in the day: Bloomberg’s Al Hunt, ABC’s Cokie Roberts and her husband, writer-broadcaster Steve Roberts, and columnist turned “Morning Joe” contributor Mike Barnicle.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, once a top aide to O’Neill, told the audience he was “overwhelmed to have the chance” to be on the Speaker’s staff.

Gibson called O’Neill “an American original” and the “most fascinating” person he ever covered.

The panel discussion was recorded for broadcast January 1 on C-SPAN3.

AllTwitter reports the man who Tweeted inaccurate information about Hurricane Sandy as the storm washed ashore, including that the NYSE had flooded which was then reported by CNN, has been outed as Shashank Tripathia, a hedge fund analyst who tweets under @ComfortablySmug.

After a delay of almost a week due to the hurricane, NBC has opened Democracy Plaza. In addition to the previously announced exhibits, a historic, rare copy of the Declaration of Independence will be on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art store in Rockefeller Plaza.

On Election Night, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski won’t be on MSNBC, instead the’ll be hosting a webcast from Manhattan’s 92Y. “Morning Joe” regulars Jon Meacham, Mike Barnicle, and Steve Rattner will take part in the panel discussion. Go here for more info.

Willie Geist Gives The Red Sox a Hit, Hours Before They Actually Get One

The cable news networks are giving a shout-out today to 100-year-old Fenway Park. The home of the Boston Red Sox and, for a time, professional football’s Boston Redskins and Boston Patriots, opened on April 20, 1912. This morning MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” broadcast from the park. Host Joe Scarborough tells TVNewser it was a “great honor” for his team to be broadcasting from “baseball’s most hallowed ground,” adding, “even if the Sox are playing like a minor league team.” The Red Sox are at the bottom of the AL East division, and right now they are hosting their rival New York Yankees. Willie Geist and Worcester’s own Mike Barnicle went inside Fenway’s scoreboard this morning and, presciently, Geist gave the Red Sox a hit. Right now, in the second inning, they actually have 3 hits and one run, trailing the Yankees 3 to 1.

Chris Matthews, Lawrence O’Donnell, Mike Barnicle Make ‘Friends of Ireland’ Guest List

The first day of Spring was an occasion for a second St. Patrick’s day celebration in Washington as President Obama and VP Biden greeted Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny for belated festivities at the White House. The Washington Examiner reports, Biden also invited three Irish-American MSNBCers to the annual “Friends of Ireland Luncheon” on Capitol Hill. Lawrence O’Donnell, Chris Matthews and Mike Barnicle were in attendance, reports the Examiner.

We were curious to know if any Irishmen or women from other networks — like Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, John King, Soledad O’Brien, Megyn Kelly or Erin Burnett — made the cut. But, alas, reps from both networks tell TVNewser none of their Irish-American talent was on the guest list.

But CNN was there, as the pool.

TV News Pays Respect to Anthony Shadid

Yesterday the New York Times announced that one of its reporters, Anthony Shadid, died in Syria of an apparent asthma attack. News of Shadid’s death was reported on Both NBC’s “Today” and CBS’ “CBS This Morning,” and on cable CNN’s morning shows discussed his passing at some length as well.

The most heartfelt response was probably on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” from Mike Barnicle.

“Tweeters tweet, bloggers blog, and reporters report,” Barnicle said, noting that Shadid was definitely in the third group.

Shadid was shot while reporting in the West Bank a few years ago, and last year was kidnapped in Libya. He appeared on CNN after he was freed to discuss that incident:

Al Roker Mixes Up Willie Geist and Joe Scarborough

MSNBC’s Willie Geist was sitting in on “Morning Joe” today for Joe Scarborough, but apparently no one told Al Roker who, appearing from a beach in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, called him “Joe” TWICE.

After correcting Roker — and giving him a hard time with Mike Barnicle — Geist ended the segment saying, “Sam Champion, reporting live for us from Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Thanks, Sammy.” Video:

Later, here’s what Geist said he learned during today’s show: “I learned that Al Roker — a wonderful reporter, we talked to him about the ratings of his show — proved again why he’s America’s second most beloved weatherman behind Sam Champion. So nice job by you, Al.”

Scarborough on Beck: ‘You Cannot Preach Hatred;’ Beck Responds

First it was Olbermann v. O’Reilly, then O’Reilly v. GE, then Olbermann v. Beck, and Beck v. NBC now it’s Scarborough v. Beck and it only took a couple hours for Beck to respond.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” today, Joe Scarborough, as a NYTimes blog put it, “castigated some commentators and Republicans, vowing to create a ‘conservative honor roll’ calling out those who express over-the-top hate-filled sentiments.” Chief among “those” appears to be Fox News host Glenn Beck.

Scarborough went on a lengthy tangent, saying: “You cannot say that the president of the United States hates all white people. You cannot call the President of the United States a racist. You cannot wallow in conspiracy theories as he did for about a month…You can’t stir up that type of hatred — calling the president a racist — and then say, ‘Oh, I’m just a rodeo clown.’”

His “Morning Joe” friends didn’t seem to want to get too involved. Mike Barnicle said, “It’s time to give Glenn Beck an intentional walk,” and Mika Brzezinski added, “He’s not a gentleman, so he’s not worth talking about.”

A few hours later on his radio show, Beck and producer Pat Gray discussed the comments.

Gray said of the former congressman turned TV host, “This loser can’t get any coverage. Any coverage. He couldn’t be voted dog catcher now.” Beck challenged Scarborough to “name the hate.”

‘Morning Joe’ Discusses Why Obama Skipped FOX

This morning, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Willie Geist, and Mike Barnicle discussed the president’s Sunday show rounds and the absence of FOX from his schedule. After showing the clip of Chris Wallace calling the White House “cry babies,” the conversation moved to a discussion about the president’s decision. Here’s an excerpt of the initial exchange:

Scarborough: Chris Wallace shouldn’t be so shocked and stunned. I mean, if I were…a republican president, there would be some outlets I’d avoid. There would be some reporters I’d avoid.

Brzezinski: I’d avoid that network, I would. If they–

Scarborough: What network?

Brzezinski: The one with the producer doing that and all the other stuff they do.

Scarborough: I think they’d avoid you as well.

After a moment, Barnicle asked, “Let me ask you, Joe. You’re advising President Barack Obama. Where do you send him first?”

“Meet the Press,” said Joe. Barnicle said he’d put him “on to Fox News,” which surprised Scarborough.

“I put him right on there. Get right in there. Look ‘em right in the eye. Sit down and look ‘em right in the eye,” said Barnicle.

Morning Joe Goes on a West Coast Road Trip

Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski will be waking up really early this week. The co-hosts will broadcast from four different locations on the West Coast this week.

Today, the team is pre-taping tomorrow’s show from the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA, in front of a studio audience. Nancy Reagan will be a guest on the program. Willie Geist and Mike Barnicle will be live at MSNBC studios for news and other updates.

Tuesday and Wednesday, Scarborough and Brzezinski will originate live from Carlsbad at the FORTUNE Most Powerful Women Summit. Brzezinski is on a panel at the summit on Tuesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, Joe & Mika will throw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium. Then it’s on to Seattle for Thursday’s broadcast at — where else? — a Starbucks. The Seattle-based coffee company sponsors the show.

Then it’s back to California for Friday’s show live from San Francisco.

Don’t look for a Starbucks mug on Willie Geist‘s new MSNBC show.

For one thing, the barista barons aren’t sponsoring “Way Too Early With Willie Geist,” which debuts Monday as the 5:30 a.m. lead-in to Starbucks-studded “Morning Joe.”

For another, the G-Man doesn’t drink java.

Geist’s caffeinated beverage of choice is Mountain Dew. He “power slams” a full can before hitting the “Morning Joe” set. “The stuff glows in the dark,” he says.

Do the Dew, Willie!

Geist will fly solo on the live “Too Early” for 30 minutes before rejoining Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Mike Barnicle on “Joe.”

In the “Joe” family, Geist is the bratty son, caught in the crossfire of his arguing parents. “Uncle Mike” Barnicle “is usually hung over,” Geist cracks, “but he takes me outside and plays catch.”

With a newborn son and toddler daughter in a two-bedroom apartment, Geist doesn’t sleep, anyway, so losing more z’s is no big deal. But will viewers follow?

Scarborough Knocks “Childish Sexual Jokes” Made By “People on Networks”

Within the first 15 minutes of Morning Joe, yesterday’s tea parties were the hot topic, especially how the media covered them.

“The larger point is that anyone who gets actively involved in government, no matter what, if they’re out there, you say that’s a good thing,” said Mike Barnicle.

“I’d rather see this than apathy,” said Mika Brzezinski.

Joe Scarborough had this take:

You look at these huge rallies, and I’m not going to mention names of people on networks that made sexual jokes, childish sexual jokes, about tens of thousands of Americans who went out and wanted to get involved in their government. I mean, it was really middle school jokes being made. I didn’t hear those jokes being made when people on the left protested over the past eight years. And I would expect that from bloggers on the left. I would expect more than that from news outlets and it happened on several networks yesterday.

Joe didn’t “mention names,” but we will — Anderson Cooper, Rachel Maddow, David Shuster and Keith Olbermann. Did we miss any?

Morning Joe Talks Glenn Beck: “Roger Ailes is the Genius”

The Morning Joe team explored the Glenn Beck phenomenon today, as Willie Geist put together a collection of some of the most emotional clips of the FNC host.

Immediately following the video, co-hosts Mika Brzezinski asked, “What the hell was that?” while Joe Scarborough couldn’t stop laughing hysterically (he later blamed it on an email).

“He loves America, what are you gonna do?” said Geist.

But Scarborough had some praise as well. “He is the 2nd highest show now over at Fox, which is saying a lot, because their ratings have just exploded since the election…Roger Ailes is the genius, he is amazing,” he said.

Geist Talks Bunking With Joe, Mika’s Boots

MSNBC’s Willie Geist is featured in a Village Voice Q&A, and fields the wide array of questions put forth by Brian Parks

So, hypothetically, if Geist and Joe Scarborough shared a bunk bed, what would be the set up? “Joe is totally a bottom, so I’d have to climb the ladder to the top of our NASCAR-themed bunk beds,” said Geist.

And what about Mika Brzezinski‘s boots. “They’re stored in climate-controlled humidors in a cellar beneath the skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza,” he said.
