Octodad?! Maybe, Says Man on GMA

abc_2-22.jpgA man who says he donated sperm three times to octomom Nadya Suleman and may be the father of children is interviewed tomorrow morning on ABC’s Good Morning America.

The man says he and Suleman “dated from 1997 to 1999″ and he “believes Suleman was married at the time.”

Then there’s this:

The man said he twice made donations at home. In at least one instance, he said, Suleman kept the sperm sample warm by placing the cup containing the sample between her breasts.

“I just remember her saying when I donated that the doctor told her that she had to keep it warm by putting it between her — between her breasts — just to keep it warm, keep it room temperature until she took it in,” he said.

Suleman has already denied the man is the father on RadarOnline.com.

Showbiz Tonight Sees Best Ratings Ever Post-Grammys

hln_2-18.jpgWith the Chris Brown-Rihanna aftermath and octomom Nadya Suleman in the headlines, Showbiz Tonight had its best week ever last week.

The program averaged 519,000 Total Viewers and 290,000 in the A25-54 demo. In the demo, HLN was 3rd at 11pmET, ahead of The Rachel Maddow show repeat (it was 4th in Total Viewers).

Dave Levine, EP of Showbiz Tonight, tells TVNewser: “This is especially gratifying given the timing, as we begin our fifth year on the air. During that time the show has really evolved, and clearly it has paid off. After two straight years of growth, we are well on our way to another great year — and I have to give the credit to the unbelievably creative Showbiz Tonight team here.”

Showbiz Tonight celebrates its four-year anniversary on Saturday.

What Do Octo-Mom, Bill Clinton & Darfur Refugees Have in Common?

Curry_2.17.jpgIn the past 16 days, Ann Curry has traveled to Florida, California, Texas and now Africa. Curry and her crew arrived in Chad yesterday to continue their reporting on the refugee situation there. “Our NBC News team has landed in Africa and is again heading to the edge of Darfur,” she writes on the Daily Nightly Blog.

In the last 12 days Curry has landed interviews ranging from octuplet mother Nadya Suleman to former Pres. Bill Clinton.

Curry will be filing reports for Nightly News, the Today show, msnbc.com and via Twitter. Her most recent Tweet: “More than a 100 degrees and dusty as our vehicle passes by faces marked with cynicism.”

You can follow her here.

Not-So-Exclusive With the Former President

On the heels of Ann Curry‘s recent exclusive with octomom Nadya Suleman, the Today show anchor talked to former President Bill Clinton over the weekend. The interview aired this morning on Today, and was called an “exclusive.” But CNN’s John Roberts also talked to Clinton this weekend, with the interview airing this morning on American Morning — and we hear his interview took place just before Curry’s. As we reported earlier, NBC’s Luke Russert also interviewed Clinton, and the former President even made a stop on Martha Stewart‘s show today.

Velez-Mitchell on Octomom : “We’re Doing it for Ratings”

velez_2-15.jpg“Today during State of the Union with John King, CNN’s Reliable Sources host Howard Kurtz” (this is how it’s written in the CNN release) talked about octomom Nadya Suleman with Bonnie Fuller and HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell.

Velez-Mitchell was honest about the reason Suleman inundated news coverage this week. “This idea that we’re all doing this for some altruistic purpose is nonsense,” she said. “We’re doing it for ratings and let’s be real about that.”

Kurtz noted Velez-Mitchell has “been talking about this constantly on cable for more than a week.”

“I blame the media,” she said. “For decades we’ve been acting like the cheerleading squad for these extremely large families…So we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and realize that a lot of the messages that we send for our own selfish purposes are extremely irresponsible.”

NBC Confirms No Money Changed Hands Over Octo-mom Interview

octomom_2-11b.jpgSo NBC had a big exclusive interview, airing over three days, with Octo-mom Nadya Suleman. And a lot of people watched.

But there were always the rumors about how NBC News got the interview. Did they pay Suleman? Pay a licensing fee for photos and video? Did some other NBC entity pay instead? And how much?

NBC News SVP of communications Allison Gollust put all the rumors to rest. “NBC News does not pay for interviews,” she tells TVNewser. “We did not pay Nadya Suleman, or anyone who represents her, for our interview. We didn’t license a single photo or video from her, or anyone who represents her. Not a dime. I cannot be more clear about this. There is no deal with anyone at NBC Universal — not at NBC News, not at Bravo. No one.”

So NBC gave no money. But do you want to? Because Suleman set up a brand new Website and she’s accepting donations.

Octo-mom Dateline Interview Brings Big Ratings

octomom_2-11.jpgLast night’s Dateline NBC featuring Ann Curry‘s interview with Octo-mom, Nadya Suleman gave NBC its best overall ratings at 10pm since Election Night.

The interview, in which Suleman revealed doctors didn’t know she was having eight babies until the seventh had already been removed from her womb, placed second behind CBS’ Without a Trace in Total Viewers. It finished first in the A18-49 demo.

The demo rating was the highest for any network at 10pm since November 25. It was also the best Dateline ratings in both categories since Matt Lauer‘s interview with Princes William and Harry on June 18, 2007.

GMA Has Octuplet Mom’s Mom Exclusive

gma_2-8.bmpWhile “Today” aired more of Ann Curry‘s exclusive interview with Octo-mom Nadya Suleman, including first pictures of the babies, Good Morning America had an exclusive with Grandma.

Angela Suleman says her daughter’s decision to impregnate herself again was “really unconscionable.” The interview was conducted by the news agency Splash News.

Here’s what TVNewser has learned about how GMA got the interview: the Splash News interview was bought by Radaronline.com, then ABC News paid Radaronline.com a licensing fee to air it.

So, ABC News pays Radaronline.com, Radaronline.com paid Splash News and Splash News likely paid Grandma Suleman. Last week there were questions raised as to how “Today” landed their mom exclusive.

By the way, Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira briefly mentioned the grandmother’s comments this morning on Today.

• This was also Sully Day on two of the morning shows, CBS’s The Early Show as well as GMA. And since the US Airways pilot’s handlers gave his first interview to Katie Couric instead of Lauer, how did Today play it? With a “shrug of the shoulders,” writes Newsday.

Pilots and Pregnancies: What To Expect Monday Morning

Expect some big ratings from all three network morning shows on Monday. Here’s why:

• ABC — Good Morning America will conduct the “first live television interview and reunion of the captain, crew and passengers of U.S. Airways Flight 1549.” What that means — although Katie Couric already interviewed this group for 60 Minutes, it took place last week. GMA is also devoting the entire first hour of the program to the story. Captain Sully (Chesley Sullenberger), of course, will be the centerpiece of the hour.

• CBS — Well, if GMA is devoting an hour to the story, The Early Show is doubling it and making the Hudson River landing the focus of the entire show. Sully and the entire crew will be on The Early Show after GMA, as will the public debut of a song about the landing by Australian singer Emma Sophina, who was a passenger on the flight.

• NBC — The Today show is going a different route. After being scooped by Couric for the exclusive, the Today show’s big guest will be octuplet mom Nadya Suleman. Ann Curry got the exclusive yesterday (some of which aired during today’s show), and questions were raised whether any money changed hands. NBC’s response: “NBC News does not and will not pay for an interview.”

Curry Gets Octoplet Mom Exclusive

curry_2-5b.jpg

NBC’s Ann Curry has gotten the first interview with Nadya Suleman, the woman who gave birth to octuplets last week.

We’re told the interview has just wrapped up in California. Insiders would not tell us where, exactly, or if the babies are included in the interview. An air date is not yet known. But the interview will appear on the Today show and on Dateline.

And for those wondering: “No money has exchanged hands,” says an NBC News spokesperson. At least not yet. Networks do often pay licensing fees for photos or other materials. And if this is going to be a story on Dateline, you can expect more than just an interview with the mother.

One burning question — what’s it like to suddenly be the mother of 14 (that’s right, she had six previous children).

> Update: Refuting reports Bravo is involved, an NBC spokesperson says: “There is no deal with Bravo.”

> More from WebNewser: TodayShow.com’s Record January

> Update, update: A preview of the interview airs tomorrow on Today. The full interview airs Monday morning and Tuesday night on Dateline. Click continued to see excerpts from the interview…
