Among the changes: “HLN After Dark” will become a full-time member of HLN’s nightly lineup, where it will focus “on stories (trials and otherwise) in the ‘court of public opinion,’” according to Safon’s note.  The channel is also gearing up for its next big trial, that of George Zimmerman, which begins June 10th, and the Daytime Emmy Awards on June 16th. There are also Nancy Grace, Dr. Drew Pinsky and Jane Velez-Mitchell specials in the works.

For HLN, it will be the biggest story since the verdict in the Casey Anthony trial in July 2011. That day delivered the highest ratings in HLN’s history.

Arias has already propelled HLN to strong ratings over the last few months, often topping both sister network CNN and MSNBC, and even occasionally Fox News in some hours. HLN also became a part of the trial, with correspondent Jean Casarez taking the stand to be quizzed about a scene she saw outside the courthouse. Then there is the Twitter account in Jodi Arias’ name, managed by her friend. The account criticized HLN and Nancy Grace for its coverage.

Expect live coverage on the cable news channels, particularly HLN (control room shot from just before the verdict, below) and CNN, which have covered the trial extensively in primetime on both channels. Fox News and MSNBC will also cover the verdict live.

Update: At 4:32, Nancy Grace says that there is “a fly in the ointment,” as things are running two minutes late.

“Justice is a couple of minutes late, six minutes to be exact”– Grace at 4:36.

THE VERDICT: At 4:49pmET, Arias is found guilty of first degree murder.

“There is a verdict, guilty on murder one,” Grace says, tearing up on camera. “What a dichotomy, I can hear in my ear the quietness in the courtroom as the verdict is read and I can hear the cheers of the crowd behind me as the verdict is read.”

But all was not as it seemed. As Dashiell Bennett and Philip Bump discovered, Banfield and Grace were talking to one another from the same parking lot in Phoenix, mere feet away from each other. The proof is in the GIF:

The pair are there to cover the verdict in the Jodi Arias trial, which will happen when the jury decides her fate. We can only assume that some sort of obstacle (perhaps a parked car, or a row of shopping carts?) prevented Grace from joining Banfield on the same set.

One thing is certain: we will never view a liveshot the same way again.

Fox News had the top 13 cable news programs in total viewers, and the top three programs in the key adults 25-54 demo. CNN was able to secure five of the top 10 slots in the demo, something that hasn’t happened since the Japan tsunami.

“The O’Reilly Factor” was the top program on Fox News and in cable news for the month in total and demo viewers, averaging 3.07 million total and 550,000 demo viewers. The 8 PM edition of “AC360″ was the top program on CNN in both total and demo viewers. Placing 14th overall in total viewers and fourth in the demo, “AC360″ averaged 1.16 million total and 431,000 demo viewers. Interestingly, in its first month on the air “Parts Unknown” has immediately become one of CNN’s top programs, placing second behind “AC360″ on the channel in both total and demo viewers.

MSNBC’s top program was “Rachel Maddow,” which averaged 925,000 total and 310,000 demo viewers. Maddow placed 18th overall in total viewers and 15th in the demo. “Nancy Grace” led HLN in total and demo viewers. “Squawk on the Street” led CNBC in total viewers, with “American Greed” tops in the demo. “Imus in the morning” was the top FBN show in total viewers, with “Stossel” leading the way in the demo.

The Jodi Arias trial continued to boost HLN’s ratings this month, with the network showing double digit growth in both Total Day and primetime. HLN placed fourth among the cable news networks in primetime and among Total Viewers in Total Day, but edged MSNBC to be third among A25-54 viewers in Total Day.

The ratings for April 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

• Primetime (Mon-Sun): 524,000 Total Viewers / 177,000 A25-54
• Total Day (Mon-Sun): 390,000 Total Viewers / 142,000 A25-54

Compared to the same month last year, HLN is up +52% in Total Viewers and +43% in A25-54 viewers in Total Day. In Primetime, the network is up +40% and +37%, respectively. During the 9am-5pm daytime programming, HLN had triple digit growth across the board, up +146% in Total Viewers and +107% in the demographic.

Early afternoon program was up significantly compared to the same week last year. The 3pm-6pmET hours were all up triple digits in both Total Viewers and A25-54 viewers. The 3pmET hour of “HLN News” was up the most, +315% in Total Viewers and +290% in A25-54 viewers.

The network’s primetime programming was also up across the board this month. “Nancy Grace” was up +50% in Total Viewers and +38% in A25-54 viewers, and Dr. Drew Pinsky‘s program was up +105% and +97%, respectively. “After Dark,” launched last month for the Arias trial, is up +58% and +55% compared to April 2012, when a re-air of Grace’s program aired in the 10pmET timeslot.

As usual, Fox News Channel’s programming topped the competition in the first quarter of 2013. The network notched the top 13 programs among total viewers and the top six in the A25-54 demographic.

“The O’Reilly Factor” was the number one show on Fox News and cable news overall, averaging  2.88 million total viewers and 428,000 demo viewers for the quarter.

“The Rachel Maddow” show was number one on MSNBC in both total viewers and the demo, averaging 928,000 and 263,000 viewers, respectively. The program placed 14th in total viewers and seventh in the demo for the quarter.

HLN’s top show for the quarter was “Nancy Grace,” which cracked the top ten programs among younger viewers. Grace’s program placed 16th in total viewers and ninth in the demo, averaging 778,000 and 252,000 viewers, respectively.

CNN’s top show in total viewers was “Anderson Cooper 360,” which placed 28th and averaged 533,000 viewers. “AC360″ also led the network among younger viewers, placing 29th and averaging 155,000 in the A25-54 demographic.

CNBC’s top program in total viewers was “Squawk On The Street,” which averaged 274,000 viewers. “American Greed” was the network’s top show in the demo with 99,000. “Lou Dobbs Tonight” was FBN’s top-rated show in both total viewers and the demo, averaging 105,000 and 25,000 viewers, respectively.

The ratings for Q1, 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

• Primetime (Mon-Sun): 435,000 Total Viewers / 155,000 A25-54
• Total Day (Mon-Sun): 308,000 Total Viewers / 118,000 A25-54

Compared to Q1 2012, HLN is up +17% in Total Day and +12% in primetime in total viewers. The network is up +23% and +32% in the A25-54 demo in total day and prime, respectively (Note: percentages are based on a blend of Nielsen Live + 7 and Live + 3 data).

The biggest gains are in the afternoon hours, where HLN is up over +100% in total and demo viewers from 3-6PM ET. 4PM’s “Making It In America,” for example, is up +136% in total viewers and +128% in the demo compared to Q1 2012.

While 8PM’s “Nancy Grace” is still the channel’s most popular show, she actually saw less growth than the other primetime hours, up +5% in total viewers and up +18% in the demo. At 7 PM Jane Velez-Mitchell was up +39% in total viewers and +50% in the demo, while at 9 PM “Dr Drew,” “What Would You Do?” and “Mysteries” combined to be up +33% and +61% in total day and prime respectively. At 10 PM “Nancy Grace, ” “What Would You Do,” “Mysteries” and “HLN After Dark” combined to be up +33% and +49% in total day and prime.
