Candy Crowley Roasted, Toasted at DC Awards Dinner

Candy Crowley is the 2012 winner of the American News Women’s Club Award for Excellence in Journalism, and the CNN anchor was roasted and toasted at a celebration dinner held at the National Press Club last night. The Hill has details on Dana Bash‘s speech:

The D.C.-based journo kept the wisecracks coming in her remarks, razzing Crowley for her increased presence in the anchor chair: “I’m here to report that some of the Candy-ism’s those of us who have worked with her for years have come to know and love, have suddenly changed. Well, maybe not suddenly — gradually — since, well let’s see when was it, oh — I know — the day you became an anchor.”

Bash continued, “That’s right — the woman who was content with a Diet Coke out of a vending machine to give her a kick start will now only drink — get this — ‘triple grande extra dry soy cappuccino.’”

The AP’s Kimberly Dozier emceed the event. Other roasters and toasters included Bill Richardson, Judy Woodruff, and Molly Boyle.
Washington Turns Out to Honor Bob Schieffer

Quite a turnout last night at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington, DC, as Bob Schieffer was honored on his 20th anniversary anchoring CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

More than 500 people turned out to honor Schieffer, including the man who’s guested more times than anyone else: “I gotta say one word about the person who has been on ‘Face the Nation’ more than any other person in the history of the broadcast,” said Schieffer. “He’s actually older than me, not by much: John McCain over here.”

CBS News chairman Jeff Fager and president David Rhodes threw the party which was attended by elected officials, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), below, and current and former administration reps, including Donald Rumsfeld, below, as well as Schieffer’s CBS colleagues including Jan Crawford, Chip Reid, Lara Logan, Bill Plante, and Nancy Cordes and from other networks, FNC’s Ed Henry, CNN’s Gloria Borger, NBC’s David Gregory and Betsy Fischer and PBS’s Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff, and Jim Lehrer. Also on hand Carin Pratt, who helmed the show for 18 years.

“We just love Carin,” said Schieffer. “I really appreciate your coming back and being with us tonight.”

“Mary Hager … is now the [executive] producer. And Senator McCain remembers Mary Hager when the two of us were chasing up and down the halls of Congress. And Mary has actually worked with me, I guess, more than 20 years. And she started very, very young — she asked me to say that.”

Only in America would an elected official call a press conference to confirm the identity of his penis.

And then have that penis knock Katie Couric off the news cycle.

After 10 consecutive days of ‘Weinergate’ coverage, I am convinced that its importance lies not with what it says about Rep. Anthony Weiner’s genitals but with what is says about us.

Christiane Amanpour’s ‘This Week’ Debut

“This Week with Christiane Amanpour” debuted this morning on ABC with the veteran foreign correspondent telling viewers, “After 20 years covering the world, the story in this country is turning into one of the most fascinating.”

The headline from Amanpour’s two headliner guests, Secy. Robert Gates and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, both pre-taped on Friday to accommodate their schedules, was their disagreement on the pace of U.S. troops leaving Afghanistan.

While the host was new, the round-table consisted of three familiar names: George Will, Donna Brazile and Paul Krugman and a new face who fit with Amanpour’s goal of giving the show a more outside-the-beltway feel: from Madrid, Amanpour welcomed Ahmed Rashid, who was billed as “the world authority on the Taliban.” The opening voice-over also featured a new tagline featuring the global focus: “From all across our world to the heart of our nation’s capitol.”

There was new music from trumpeter Chris Botti and a new show open and set backdrop, changing out the blue “This Week” logo with a map of the world in red. The Sunday funnies remained.

Following this morning’s show Amanpour told TVNewser, “It’s great to finally be underway, and I’m so pleased to have had two great first guests and a wonderful round table. I’m excited about having this platform to explore the issues that affect Americans. I want to open the window on the world to help with the understanding of all of the global challenges out there.” Amanpour’s opening welcome after the jump…

Did you watch? If so, what did you think?

The Only Network to Provide Live of Speaker Pelosi? It’s Not CNN or MSNBC

So, we wonder if the White House still thinks Fox News is “not a news network.” Tonight, Fox News was the only news channel [other than C-SPAN] to provide live coverage of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi making her way to the house chamber, then speaking to members ahead of tonight’s vote on health care reform. CNN stayed with a taped replay of The Situation Room. MSNBC was airing a crime documentary, but mentioned that Pelosi was speaking during a scheduled live cut-in. FNC and MSNBC have teased they’ll have coverage of the vote when it happens. CNN returns to live coverage at 7pmET.

Decision, Decisions: Pres. Speech at Naval Academy or Nancy Pelosi Briefing

After yesterday’s dueling speeches from Pres. Barack Obama and former VP Dick Cheney, this morning the cablers had another programming decision to make: Pres. Obama speaking at the Naval Academy commencement or House Speaker Nancy Pelosi giving her weekly briefing, with heightened interest about her CIA commments from last week. (She didn’t talk about it today).

CNN and MSNBC aired Obama from the beginning. FNC aired Pelosi from the beginning.

MSNBC stayed with Obama, switching to Pelosi after about 3 minutes. Fox News did not take any of Obama. CNN switched to Pelosi only after Obama had finished.

FNC Producer Involved in Scuffle at Pelosi Briefing

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi‘s news-making briefing yesterday was not the only excitement in the room — some press members got into a scuffle as well.

Roll Call reports Fox News producer Chad Pergram, “got a bit hot under the collar with a photographer who had been jostling him” during the briefing. An insider tells TVNewser the photographer, who was either “new or doesn’t cover the Hill very much,” tried to push his way into position, past a videographer and into Pergram, when Pelosi began to leave.

But she was pulled back to the podium by a final question, and the bumping continued. After the briefing ended, the verbal sparring between Pergram and the photog did not.

Still, it never reached Vince Morris-like levels.
