Curling, Hockey to Return to MSNBC, CNBC

olympics nbc_sochi1As live coverage of the Olympic Winter Games from Sochi nears, NBC is gearing up to broadcast competition across its channels, including on CNBC and MSNBC. In total, those cable nets, along with USA, will televise 124 hours of live coverage.

CNBC will be the hub for curling, airing 36 hours a week. MSNBC shifts from politics to pucks, hosting 45 hours of live hockey coverage in addition to curling.

The coverage won’t be limited to television, as games will be streaming live on NBCOlympics.com, available to digital customers with authenticated cable, satellite or telco via “TV Everywhere.”

In Holiday Cards, Fox Roasts More Than Chestnuts

Once again the Fox News and Fox Business media relations folks have served up some holiday cheer but taking jabs at their competitors in holiday cards. Yes, the war on Christmas the competition is alive and well at Fox. In the Fox Biz card, below, FBN anchors make the nice list, while a few CNBC anchors make the “naughty” list

66.8 Million People Watched Election In Primetime, Down From 2008

Nielsen has just released the final primetime ratings tally across all networks. 66.8 million people tuned into coverage leading up to the projection of President Obama’s reelection during the 11 PM hour (from 8-11PM ET). That is down from 2008, when 71.5 million people tuned in during the same time period.

The Nielsen-rated networks covering the election this year were NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, PBS, Univision, Telemundo, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Current TV and TV One.

Among the broadcasters, NBC led the way with 12.12 million viewers, followed by ABC with 10.52 million viewers, CBS with 7.92 million and Fox with 4.93 million. The cable news ratings for primetime can be found here. Fox News was second among all networks in prime behind NBC, followed by ABC, CNN, CBS, Fox and MSNBC.

PBS notes that it had a cume audience of six million, more than its 2004 and 2008 ratings combined, though for the evening it averaged around a million viewers each hour, well below the broadcast competition.

Debate Ratings: 65.6 Million Watch 2nd Presidential Debate

The final numbers are in, and 65.6 million people watched the second presidential debate live on TV last night, according to Nielsen.

Nielsen’s number includes NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, PBS, Univision, Telemundo, Fox News, CNN, Current TV, CNBC and MSNBC.

All told, the second debate was down slightly from the first Presidential debate of the cycle, which drew 67.2 million viewers, and up significantly from last week’s VP debate, which drew 51.4 million. Compared to the second debate of 2008, the ratings are up by a few million viewers.

Our coverage from the RNC and DNC, stories related to 9/11/12, the tragedy at the embassy in Benghazi and the unfortunate end to a car chase on Fox News last week — our most-read story ever — led to a record month. And we’re on track for a record year.

So thanks to all of you for sticking with us over the years, from when Brian put up that first post on CableNewser almost 9 years ago to today. It’s been a blast watching the site, and Mediabistro, grow — including adding other great media sites to our network like TVSpy and LostRemote.

Debate Ratings: Fox News Tops Cable News For First Debate, As More People Tune In Than 2008

More than 58 million people watched the first Presidential debate last night between President Obama and Mitt Romney, up substantially from the first debate in the 2008 election cycle, which had 52.4 million viewers.

Fox News was the most-watched cable news network during the debate, and will likely be the most-watched network on TV, though final broadcast numbers will not be released until after 4 PM.

Update: Finals are in, and ABC was the top network during the debate, followed by NBC and CBS. Fox News ended up fourth. Finals numbers can be viewed here.

Fox News, MSNBC, NBC, Fox and CBS are all up from the same debate in 2008, while CNN and ABC are down. In the adults 25-54 demo, FNC and MSNBC are up compared to 2008, while CNN is down.

The 58 million figure (and the 52.4 million figure) does not include coverage on PBS, Univision, C-SPAN, the cable business networks or online.

Where to Watch the First Presidential Debate

‘Today’ EP: Olympics a ‘Cleansing Moment’ For The NBC Morning Show

The excutive producer of NBC’s “Today” and the network’s Olympics coverage, Jim Bell, speaks to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Marisa Guthrie in a London 2012 postmortem interview.

Questions about NBC’s Olympics coverage abound, as well as the morning show’s ratings struggles:

The Hollywood Reporter: How will the Olympics provide Today with forward momentum?

Jim Bell: For the Today show, the Olympics were a cleansing moment. It was a lot of fun to be in the midst of such a big event and maximize exposure to people who might not have been watching. Moving forward, we’ve got to convince some of those people that they might want to stick around.

He added later:

Obviously, the first half of 2012 was tougher for us. I don’t need to sugarcoat it. It was tough. But London felt big and special. And it reminded everybody — even us — how lucky we are to be able to work on this show.

Since returning to New York, the show finds itself at risk once again. “Today” won Monday in the ratings, but fell to “Good Morning America” in total viewers on Tuesday. “Today” is pulling out all the stops this week, scheduling high-profile concerts every day, and having Olympic athletes on to serve as special contributors.

‘Dateline’ Wins Friday Night

“Dateline” had a successful return to two-hour episodes Friday night.

The two-hour murder mystery called “Twisted” won the night in Total Viewers averaging 6.02 million. The show grew with each half hour: 5.02 million at 9pm to 6.84 million by the 10:30 half hour.

“Dateline” topped its newsmagazine competion on ABC: A repeat of “What Would You Do?” at 9pm and “20/20″ (which included this story about a former Philadelphia meteorologist) at 10pm. It was a tie at 10pm in the A18-49 demo with “Dateline” and “20/20″ averaging a 1.5 rating.

This was the highest-rated Friday for NBC since April 20. “Datline” will be two hours on Friday nights until the Olympics begin July 27.
