HBO To Air 90-Minute Hard Knocks Special

Football fans won’t have five-weeks of Hard Knocks this summer, but HBO is airing a 90-minute special celebrating the past ten years of the sports documentary on Aug. 31 at 10:00 p.m.

“We know football fans are hungry for compelling NFL programming and we think they’ll love the 10th anniversary special,” said Rick Bernstein, executive producer, HBO Sports.

According to HBO, the Hard Knocks special will feature moments from previous seasons that featured the Baltimore Ravens (2001), Dallas Cowboys (2002, 2008), Kansas City Chiefs (2007), Cincinnati Bengals (2009), and the New York Jets (2010) along with new interviews and never-before-seen out-takes. An official title for the show will be announced in August.

“The first 10 years of Hard Knocks has been the ultimate fly-on-the-wall NFL training camp experience,” said Steve Sabol, president of NFL Films. “We look forward to taking a look back at those shows and reintroducing the fans to those characters who made the decade of Hard Knocks so memorable.”

Mel Kiper Compares Cam Newton To Akili Smith

Most folks are split down the middle on Cam Newton‘s future in the NFL.

But nobody has compared him to former Oregon quarterback and one-year wonder Akili Smith … until now.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper did just that on Wednesday while hosting a conference call with the media.

“He was a one-year wonder. Akili Smith was a one-year wonder,” Kiper said.” “If you hit (on Newton), you could have a sensational quarterback for ten years. (But) if you miss, it sets you back three, four, five years.”

In case you need a refresher on how bad Smith was, the former No. 3 overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft was 3-14 as a starting quarterback and his touchdown-to-interception was 5:13.

Jeez, Mel. Tell us how you really feel about Cam.

Hoops Media Gets Opportunity To Feel Like All-Stars

Kobe Bryant and Blake Griffin weren’t the only All-Stars in action this past weekend.

Members of the media had a chance to play in their own All-Star game of sorts on Sunday at Santa Monica High School. The game was organized by Li-Ning, a Chinese athletic company that currently has sponsorship deals with Baron Davis, Evan Turner, Jose Calderón, Shaquille O’Neal, and Hasheem Thabeet.

“I talked to Burton Chawla last July and we were doing a Golden Hoops event. I helped him resurrect an event in New York City and we started kicking around some ideas about All-Star,” said Li-Ning’s Brand Initiative Director for Basketball, Brian Cupps. “He said one thing was he knew all these guys that are writing about the games and talking to the best players all around the world all the time … they’re all ballplayers at heart. Some of them weren’t great players at the high school level, some of them are college players, and they still have a great passion for the game.” continued…

GQ's Uplifting, Depressing Profile of A.J. Daulerio

February’s GQ publishes a profile of Deadspin editor A.J. Daulerio that’s equal parts fawning, impressed, and depressing. If nothing else, Daulerio is refreshingly honest.

“The Today show called me on a Sunday at two thirty. It was brunch time with my girlfriend and a friend, and I was half in the bag,” he says of his post-Brett Favre dong shot media tour. “A couple of hours and two bong hits later, I’m doing an interview on the porch. Everyone is jamming Adderall to clean the place as quickly as possible. I was trying to find pants.”

The profile paints a portrait of a quality journalist who works the phones and cultivates sources (“He’s a throwback to an earlier era – when journalists had enough charisma to inspire movies,” Nick Denton says of his editor.) who may not be using his powers for good. (“I never wanted people to feel like they needed to take a shower,” Deadspin founder Will Leitch admits when asked about the direction of his former site.)

Daulerio sounds conflicted. continued…

A Baseball Great Gets His Due in the Press

Trevor Hoffman won’t go down as the greatest reliever of all-time. He probably won’t go down as one of the top 10. He’ll enter the Hall of Fame at some point, but more than most will forget the name of Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader (especially after Mariano Rivera passes him next year or in early 2013).

Which is too bad, because he sounds like a stand-up guy.

“He would try to make you feel comfortable, and success never went to his head,” San Diego Padres reliever Dirk Hayhurst told The New York Times after Hoffman retired on Wednesday. “He realized everyone had kind of put him on a pedestal, so for simplicity’s sake, he learned how to perform for the people who had that expectation. But it made me feel so much better to get to know the real Trevor.”

Others were even more effusive in their praise. continued…

Hey, Let's Talk a Bit About the NBA Lockout

NBA players started the process of voting to decertify their union. It’s far from a done deal, however.

After a Sports Business Journal report surfaced that two teams had voted unanimously to decertify, NBPA executive officer Billy Knight told anyone who would listen that the union was still “pretty far off” from completing the decertification.

The latest moves are simply positioning for the negotiations to come at a later date. They are similar to what the NFLPA did back in September. At the time, the NFLPA head said it was a “non-story” until March with the collective bargaining agreement expired. It’s smart to view the NBPA’s tactics in the same light.

But still…

On Thursday, FIFA’s 2<del datetime="2010-11-29T17:44:02+00:00">4</del>2-man executive committee (or maybe 23-man) will vote to award the 2018 and 2022 World Cup to two lucky host nations. But who’s is going to win? Well… no one really has any idea.

Why?

Because the Ex-Co is the exact opposite of transparent.

Gabriele Marcotti writing in the Wall Street Journal: “Because it’s a political process by secret ballot, pretty much anything goes when it comes to allegations of skullduggery or conspiracy.”

Simon Kuper for the Financial Times: “The campaign to host these World Cups is much like a conclave of cardinals choosing a pope. It’s a campaign waged mostly behind firmly closed doors, and the very secrecy of the process, and the desperation of the nine bidders to win, invites corruption.”

And there’s this as well, from Kuper:

Only the purest of Exco members – Michel Platini, for instance -will vote strictly on quality of bid and the prospect of new markets. Others will be swayed by more political, but equally legitimate, concerns. Most Exco members want something for their votes: often, a vote for their own country. Mohamed bin Hammam, the Qatari Exco member, put this frankly at last month’s Leaders in Football conference in London. “I will be naturally looking to the interests of Qatar,” he said. “All the bidders are telling me, ‘Okay, if you vote for me I will vote for you.’ That must not be surprising to anybody.” He admitted he wouldn’t necessarily vote for the “best” bid, but one that served Qatar’s interests.

So yes, chaos. It’s an embarrassing situation for FIFA, although no one can do anything to stop the potential corruption.

As the world of soccer descends upon Zurich – Landon Donovan, Morgan Freeman, and Bill Clinton are just some of the ambassadors for the United States bid while Premier Vladimir Putin is there on behalf of the Russian bid – the BBC is breaking its own embargoes and getting in hot water for the timing of one television program. continued…

The Rehabilitation of Michael Vick Will Be Televised

Michael Vick – he of the dog fighting, the jail term, and worst Q rating on the planet – landed his very own positive Sports of the Times profile.

The quarterback, who earned his first start since 2006 on Sunday, was thrust into the spotlight after Kevin Kolb suffered a concussion in the first game of the year. Enter Vick, who joined the Eagles in August 2009 and played in 12 games last year but only threw 13 passes while running 24 times. The former Virginia Tech star played well in the opening day loss and even better in a week two victory over the Detroit Lions.

“I’m very proud of him,” Reid told Timesman William C. Rhoden. “It’s a true testament if you work hard, you keep your nose clean, good things can happen, and he’s worked very hard at doing both those things.”

More importantly, he’s rehabilitating his image. continued…
