New York Times Editor: ‘Our Goal is Not to Become an Online TV station’

Jill Abramson, the New York Times‘ executive editor, has been answering reader questions online this week. Abramson has discussed source anonymity and the coverage of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, as well as answering a series of questions about the Times’ recent investment in video:

Q. Why all the new investment in video? Is The Times on its way to becoming a online TV station?— John Nolan, Morton Grove, IL

A. News stories can now be told across many platforms and the information our journalists collect can be presented in many different forms. The question I often ask as executive editor is: What is the most powerful way to tell a story or deliver information? Video is certainly an increasingly important platform for Times journalism. Our goal is not to become an online TV station, but to create video that enables our readers and audience to “watch The Times” as well as “read The Times.”

For five weeks, Gbaja-Biamila along with ex-teammates Robert Ortiz and Ricky Sharpe, teamed up for ABC’s Expedition Impossible.

The brainchild of Mark Burnett, the show is a hybrid of The Amazing Race and Survivor set in the Moroccan desert. Teams are competing for $50,000 and a new Ford Explorer.

SportsNewser chatted with the former linebacker about his time in Morocco and his passionate love for Oprah Winfrey.

SportsNewser: What’s this about being an Oprah Winfrey fan?

Akbar Gbaja-Biamila: I’m a huge Oprah fan.

How did that start? continued…

New York Times’ Thomas S. Friedman on CNN’s Anderson Cooper: ‘Too Good to Check’

The New York Times columnist Thomas S. Freidman wrote about CNN’s Anderson Cooper in an article titled, “Too Good to Check” referring to Cooper’s effort to fact check everything.

Friedman writes that Cooper “expertly deconstructed on his CNN show the bogus rumor that President Obama’s trip to Asia would cost $200 million a day.”

The Times columnist went so far as to say that Cooper’s fact-checking is crucial to a better informed electorate to strengthen this country’s democracy:

But the carnival barkers that so dominate our public debate today are not going away — and neither is the Internet. All you can hope is that more people will do what Cooper did — so when the next crazy lie races around the world, people’s first instinct will be to doubt it, not repeat it.

The Best Blog You're not Reading: The Journal of Sports Media

There’s not enough thought in the blogging world. We’re all guilty at times. Writing too quickly. The constant need to post. Content, content, content.

Enter the Journal of Sports Media. Although the crew of eight contributors don’t post every day, it’s worth reading when they do.

A rationale reasoning of the Ines Sainz debacle. An interesting take on the perils of using social media in sports reporting. A practical discussion of instant replay.

The JoSM won’t blow you away, but it adds an intelligent perspective. That’s all we ask.

Networks Scramble to Cover Brett Favre Announcement

When it comes to retirement, you can never take football players at their word.
NFL Network carried the feed, which was picked up by ESPN (of course) as well as MSNBC and HLN.
