Who’s Going to Rome to Cover the Pope?

Fox News’s Shepard Smith will soon be on his way to Rome, reporting from the Vatican on the resignation of Benedict XVI and upcoming Conclave and election. Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Greg Palkot will be there tomorrow while Amy Kellogg should be on the ground by this afternoon. Smith, Palkot and Kellogg all covered the death of Pope John Paul II and election of Benedict in 2005.

NBC News correspondent/MSNBC anchor Chris Jansing, who also covered the last Papal transition will be leaving this afternoon for several days of reporting/anchoring and will also cover the election of the next pope. In a Media Beat interview, Jansing told us covering the death of John Paul II and election of Benedict was the most fulfilling assignment of her career: “It was just an extraordinary global event and also had some personal meaning to me.” Jansing will join NBC Rome correspondent Claudio Lavagna already on scene. Richard Engel will also report.

CBS has Allen Pizzey in Rome and London correspondent Mark Phillips will be joining him.

“GMA” Weekend Anchor Dan Harris, along with David Wright, Jeffrey Kofman, and Nick Schifrin will be reporting from the Vatican. Wright covered the 2005 transition. ABC’s Cokie Roberts, whose mother served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, will provide a historical perspective.

CNN’s Rome-based correspondent Ben Wedeman will cover and will be joined by Jim Bitterman, Max Foster and Jose Levy for CNN en Español are all en route.

Ireland and Northern Ireland. There’s a Bloody Difference

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth made a trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland celebrating her diamond jubilee in another part of her realm. She also made history when she shook hands with Martin McGuinness, the former commander of the IRA, which waged a bloody campaign for decades against British rule in Northern Ireland. He was even behind the assassination of the Queen’s cousin in 1979.

But there was an unfortunate error during “Good Morning America’s” story of the Queen’s visit. Correspondent Nick Schifrin was introduced and then identified as reporting from Ireland, not Northern Ireland: an egregious mistake considering the whole story is about the Queen, the IRA and therefore Northern Ireland’s status within the UK.

But, to ABC’s credit, they were the only network morning show to have a correspondent in Belfast for the historic gathering.

Nick Schifrin Moves to ABC News London

ABC News correspondent Nick Schifrin will move to ABC’s London bureau next month from his post covering Afghanistan and Pakistan. Schifrin joined ABC News 10 years ago as a desk editor and worked his way up to become a producer in New York before taking on his first overseas assignment in India.

Schifrin was the first Western journalist to arrive in Abbottabad, Pakistan after the killing of Osama bin Laden last May, getting the first look inside bin Laden’s secret compound and the bedroom where Navy Seals took him out.

Muhammad Lila, who joined ABC News in January, will take over as the correspondent covering Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the surrounding region.

20/20 produces hour on Bin Laden death

A week after producing two hours on the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the ABC News magazine team is producing tonight’s “20/20″ all about the death of Osama bin Laden. ABC is saying the show will give viewers “the most complete picture yet … from inside the situation room in Washington, DC to inside the compound in Pakistan to inside the minds of the brave men who stormed it.” Expect reports from Chris Cuomo, Elizabeth Vargas, Chris Connelly, Martha Raddatz and Nick Schifrin. “Kill Shot: The Story Behind bin Laden’s Death” airs tonight at 10pmET/PT on ABC.

Bin Laden Killed: Jonathan Karl and Dick Cheney on One-hour ‘Nightline’

Just like the evening newscasts, ABC’s “Nightline” will also be an hour tonight and will include more of ABC’s Jonathan Karl‘s interview with former VP Dick Cheney. NBC News caught up with Cheney this morning and Fox News did a phone interview with him earlier today. “Nightline” will also have reports from Christiane Amanpour, Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran, and Bill Weir in New York and ABC News’ Nick Schifrin will report from Pakistan on the latest news from the region.

Bin Laden Killed: Foreign Correspondents En Route to Pakistan

Foreign correspondents spread throughout the Middle East are en route to Pakistan today, following the news that Osama Bin Laden was killed there by U.S. special forces. 2011 has seen a flurry of news from the Middle East and North Africa, with news happening almost daily from Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and other countries.

ABC News of course already had a correspondent in-country in Nick Schifrin, who had the first video footage from the compound this morning.

CNN’s Nic Robertson is heading to the country, where he is expected to appear on the channel tonight. Robertson was in Afghanistan during the 9/11 attacks, and has deep ties to the region.

Fox News Channel’s Greg Palkot and Dominic Di-Natale are also heading to Pakistan.

Bin Laden Killed: ABC’s Exclusive from Inside the Compound

We all hear the word A LOT. But ABC News truly did get an exclusive with video from inside the compound where Osama Bin Laden was killed. It was obtained by the ABC News team on the ground in Pakistan. It’s the kind of video that other network surely will — if they haven’t already — use in their programs using a “fair use” argument. TVNewser has learned other networks have called ABC requesting that it be made pool material. But, it’s ABC’s exclusive and they want you to know that. CBS & ABC to Launch On-Going Specials

CBS launches its new series “Tough Choices” tonight on the CBS “Evening News with Katie Couric” at 6:30pmET. The launch is in conjunction with the bipartisan Federal Deficit Commission’s final report. “In the near term, there is no more pressing domestic issue for America than the deficit,” said Executive Producer Rick Kaplan said.

ABC News is starting an on-going special of their own titled “Afghanistan: Can We Win?” which will air across all ABC platforms. The series kicks off with George Stephanopoulos co-anchoring “Good Morning America” from Kabul on Monday and continues throughout the week with reports from Martha Raddatz, Nick Schifrin, Bob Woodruff, and Mike Boettcher.
