Women in the World, Brought to you by Women in TV News

NBC News special correspondent Chelsea Clinton was among the tvnewsers leading panels at today’s Women in the World conference. But it was her mother who got a thunderous applause and shouts of “2016!” when she took the stage at the fourth annual event. Hillary Clinton called women’s rights “a core imperative for every society.”

Clinton’s speech kicked off the day’s events, which featured an impressive roster of women from the television news industry: ABC’s Cynthia McFadden, Deborah Roberts and JuJu Chang and CBS’s Norah O’Donnell all moderated panel discussions on topics ranging from women in the tech industry to fostering female leaders.

Before moderating a spirited panel discussion about the epidemic of sexual abuse in India, McFadden (pictured above) talked with an Indian woman who was the victim of a rape. She sat with her back to the audience in order to conceal her identity. The woman, whose case is still pending in the Indian high court, described how she was raped by a male friend of hers four

Willie Geist, Natalie Morales Will Host Nik Wallenda Walk Across Grand Canyon

In June, daredevil Nik Wallenda will attempt to walk across the Grand Canyon on a tightrope, live on Discovery Channel. NBC News’ Peacock Productions will be producing the jump, and so NBC “Today” co-hosts Willie Geist and Natalie Morales will be serving as the hosts of the event.

Wallenda announced the addition of Geist and Morales while walking on a tightrope above the audience at Discovery’s upfront presentation in New York yesterday (see the photo to the left). For insurance purposes, he was wearing a harness, “don’t worry though,” he said yesterday. “I won’t be wearing one when I walk across the Canyon.”

Last year ABC aired Wallenda’s walk across Niagara Falls, with “Good Morning America’”s Josh Elliott and “SportsCenter’”s Hannah Storm hosting. The event drew record ratings for ABC. ABC and Discovery were in a bidding war for the Grand Canyon stunt, with Discovery simply making the better offer. NBC, as the producer of the show, will also benefit.

Katie Couric Gets First On-Camera Interview with Manti Te’o

Manti Te’o has granted his first on-camera interview following revelations of a hoax involving a fake girlfriend to ABC’s Katie Couric. The interview will air on Couric’s syndicated show “Katie” on Thursday with previews airing on all ABC News programs.

Couric will sit down with Te’o and his parents, Brian and Ottilia Te’o, who are speaking out for the first time and say they were also victims of the hoax.

In an off-camera interview with ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap Friday, Te’o reiterated that he’s the greatest victim of the hoax, while admitting he’d made mistakes, including telling his father he met “Lennay Kekua.”

Given that the interview is for Couric’s show, but that she also contributes to ABC News, one might wonder if Te’o and his family were paid for their appearance. ABC News tells us no money changed hands. Couric’s PR man Matthew Hiltzik was hired by the Te’o family in recent days.

The Te’o interview comes a week after Oprah Winfrey got a big “get” in Lance Armstrong for her network, OWN.

3.2 Million People Watch Oprah Winfrey-Lance Armstrong Interview On OWN

3.2 million people watched Oprah Winfrey interview Lance Armstrong on a special edition of “Oprah’s Next Chapter” last night on OWN, according to preliminary numbers from Nielsen. It drew an additional 1.2 million viewers in its re-air at 10:30 p.m.

While it was an extremely good night for Oprah and OWN, it was not a record-breaking one ratings-wise. The highest-rated program in OWN’s history was the interview with Whitney Houston‘s daughter Bobbi Kristina, as well as other members of the Houston family, following the singer’s death. That episode of “Oprah’s Next Chapter” drew 3.5 million viewers in March, 2012. In August of 2012, an interview with singer Rihanna drew 2.5 million viewers to the program.

It is worth noting that OWN also streamed the interview live on Oprah.com, something that it has not done previously for any interviews. That may have cannibalized some of the viewership.

Tonight OWN will air part two of the interview. Given the fact that Armstrong has already made the confession, and that it is a Friday night, expect the ratings to slide considerably.

For Oprah, the interview is big only by comparison. Back when she had her syndicated network talk show in the 1990s, her big interviews would routinely garner more than 10 million viewers.

Following Oprah-Armstrong Interview, A Rush For Followups

Last night was night one of the Oprah Winfrey interview of disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong. Oprah wasted no time, getting Armstrong to confess to doping right off the bat in a series of pointed yes or no questions.

WATCH:

Following the interview, there was an arms war on cable news and on the morning shows to try and book the best “gets” to react to the interview.

Thanks to a serendipitous booking, CNN’s “AC360,” Anderson Cooper interviewed Betsy Andreu, who Armstrong talked about during the interview with Oprah. She was emotional, raw and spoke directly to Armstrong.

Networks Angling For Manti Te’o Interview

As the Manti Te’o hoax story spreads across the media landscape, the race is on to get the first interview with the star Notre Dame football player.

TVNewser hears that ESPN and NBC News have both been making their pitch to Notre Dame and people close to Te’o, and it is safe to assume that many other news outlets have been as well.

Sports Illustrated‘s sports media ace Richard Deitsch got a comment from ESPN on the matter:

Says ESPN on a possible Manti T’eo interview: “We like many are pursuing the interview. No confirmation.”

— Richard Deitsch (@richarddeitsch) January 17, 2013

Te’o is likely to face tough questioning when he does decide to talk, given the inconsistencies in the story he has presented publicly. Even if he is telling the truth about being hoaxed, it begs the question how he could be fooled so easily.

He could also take a cue from another sports star: Lance Armstrong. Armstrong decided to come clean via an interview with Oprah Winfrey, airing tonight on OWN. Winfrey makes her interviewees seem a little more human, and it is clear she is gunning for any big interview that she can get.

Right now, Te’o is that big get.

For ABC’s Neal Karlinsky, Lance Armstrong Confession Is Personal

As Lance Armstrong comes clean to Oprah Winfrey about his days of doping, it is something of a bittersweet moment for ABC News correspondent Neal Karlinsky. Karlinsky has been following the Armstrong story longer than just about any other journalist in TV news, beginning in 2010 with an interview with Armstrong’s former teammate Floyd Landis.

There is also personal element to it.

“I used to race competitively, I feel very passionately about the sport of cycling, I just love it,” Karlinsky tells TVNewser. “There was never any intersection between this — lets face it, obscure sport in the United States — and my career as a journalist. I never expected that intersection to be the one story that is pulling the sport down.”

Since the Landis interview, Karlinsky has been on the Armstrong beat for ABC, and along the way has spoken to dozens of sources close to Armstrong and his teammates. He says that he was not surprised the U.S. Anti Doping agency took action against the cyclist, but rather that it took so long.

“This story — in talking to sources on background since 2010 — has felt like it might explode with a huge development at any moment almost the entire time,” he said.

Karlinsky says that Armstrong genuinely wants to be able to compete competitively again, and that is one of the driving forces behind his decision to come clean.

CBS News Chief: ‘We Wanted the Lance Armstrong Interview Badly’

As disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong prepares to sit down with Oprah Winfrey tonight (the interview will air on OWN Thursday), the chairman of CBS News says that the network regrets that Armstrong didn’t sit with them instead.

“We wanted the Lance Armstrong interview badly. He chose to go with Oprah,” said Jeff Fager, who is also the executive producer of the iconic newsmagazine. Fager was speaking on a panel about “60 Minutes Sports” at the Television Critics Association Winter press tour in Pasadena.

Admittedly, CBS and Armstrong do not have the friendliest history. In 2011 Armstrong demanded an apology from the network for airing a story that suggested he was a cheat, which it now seems clear he was. Fager responded to the lawsuit by asserting that the reporting by “60 Minutes” was thorough and accurate.

“CBS This Morning” co-anchor Gayle King, who happens to be Oprah’s best friend, said this morning that the talk-show host has been “pulling all-nighters” in advance of the interview.

“And what I know about this story is that it all came together within the last week,” King said. “And Oprah spent this past week pulling what you did in college, all-nighters getting ready. So whatever Lance has to say, she is certainly prepared.”
