Paris Hilton Walks out on ABC Interview

Alleged famous person Paris Hilton walked out of an interview with ABC News’ Dan Harris this week. The question that caused the walk-off? Whether or not her “moment” had passed, and if she was past her prime. Harris appeared on “Good Morning America” to talk about the incident, and Hilton:

Hilton would eventually return and finish the interview with Harris. More of the interview will air tonight on “Nightline.”

Hansen Previews Upcoming Financial Special on the “Menu”

Dateline NBC correspondent Chris Hansen joined us today on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu to talk about his upcoming Dateline investigative series, “Inside the Financial Fiasco.” The first in the three-part series airs Sunday at 7pm on NBC.

“We talk to industry insiders who’ve never spoken publicly before, who take us inside these mortgage companies,” he says. “The fraud, the kinds of things that were going on in these retail mortgage outlets was absolutely stunning.”

We asked Hansen about the iconic “To Catch a Predator,” which he says may return in the future. “I think it was important, it raised awareness it created a dialogue that didn’t exist before,” says Hansen. “It reminded us that enterprise reporting, and impact reporting, using hidden cameras and that sort of thing, is really important and gets people’s attention in a good way. But I think it was time to take a look at other very important topics.”

Also discussed: President Bush’s upcoming book, TMZ giving politicians the Paris Hilton treatment and the reason he started blogging and tweeting.

Who Is Martin Eisenstadt?

All day, TVNewser has been making calls on the story of Martin Eisenstadt, trying to find out if the person who claims to be one of the sources of Carl Cameron‘s reporting about Gov. Sarah Palin‘s is real.

On his Website, Eisenstadt claims he was one of Cameron’s sources: “Last week I was the one who leaked those things to a producer at Fox News who works with Cameron. Carl and his producers are good guys, and I don’t want them to have to worry about protecting their sources,” he wrote.

And that may have been enough for MSNBC. During a segment yesterday, David Shuster discussed Eisenstadt. Shuster began the segment saying, “We now have a face and a name with these allegations.” But minutes later, Shuster wasn’t so sure:

There is something suspicious about this blog that we had printed out. I’m not sure we can necessarily say this is in fact who this person is because I’ve never heard of the name Martin Eisenstadt and there’s now indications that maybe this was just made up.

But if MSNBC was duped, so, apparently, were many others. CBS News has linked to an Eisenstadt post before, in which he claims Joe the Plumber has ties to Charles Keating. The Huffington Post as well as the LA Times may have been taken for a ride over an Eisenstadt story claiming Paris Hilton‘s parents were miffed at the McCain campaign for using the socialite in a campaign ad.

So who is he? His bio claims: “Mr. Eisenstadt sits on five editorial boards, has testified before many congressional committees, and worked on five presidential campaigns.” Including, apparently, the McCain campaign.

Through the course of several emails with Eisenstadt today, here is what he had to say:

It’s strange for me (and all a bit Hegelian) to get requests to prove that I exist. But I appreciate your journalistic responsibility to do so. I’m not sure if you saw the update I posted on my blog where I address the issue head on. In short, every single blog that says I am a “hoax” has emanated from a single, bitter individual who for some reason has a vendetta against me – a golf blogger allegedly named “Wolfrum.” You see, in the Google era it is very easy to spread rumors about people. You’ll see in that post some links to youtube clips from both the BBC, and our own institute wherein I refute these claims on camera. I’ve yet to see any of my “accusers” show their face on camera.

You flatter me that I could construct such an elaborate ruse! I suppose if I didn’t exist, it would indeed be impressive to have made all this up. In the meantime, my attorneys have advised me not to get into any details about my discussions with Fox News, Carl Cameron or any of his producers or FNC staff. You can see what happened to Scooter Libby when he started leaking things, so I can’t take any further risks.

So, the mystery, for now, continues.

Click continued to see the MSNBC clip yesterday as well as one of the “proof” YouTube videos offered by Eisenstadt…

Cablers to Paris Hilton: “That’s Hot”

The summer was steadily moving along, without any major Paris Hilton storylines, when suddenly, at 6pmET yesterday, it all changed.

In the past 24 hours, the, uh, celebrity has become a top story on the cablers, as her mock campaign ad has generated nearly four million views on FunnyorDie.com alone. She’s been mentioned 63 times on MSNBC, 46 on CNN and 41 on FNC in the last 24 hours, according to TVEyes. Let’s see some of the ways she’s been slipped into the news conversation:

• MSNBC’s Willie Geist, joking, on Morning Joe’s “What Have We Learned Today?”: “I was reminded that Paris Hilton is one of our great Americans who stood up in the face of John McCain and changed American politics forever.”

• Jossip made the Anderson Cooper/Paris connection after an AC360 segment last night. “Paris Hilton, front and center in the Presidential campaign — who woulda thunk-it?” said Cooper.

• FNC’s Neil Cavuto spent a segment on “Your World” discussing the energy crisis. Check out the chyron:

The Daily Show took on the recent media uproar over Sen. John McCain‘s ad featuring Paris Hilton and Britney Spears last night, as well as Sen. Barack Obama‘s comments after.

“I believe by commenting on the perceived potential subtle racial messaging in the ad, you have taken what political scientists refer to as ‘the bait,’” said host Jon Stewart. “And when you have taken the bait, the media goes fishing.”

But besides the “race card,” what else has been in the media’s deck?

Click continued to see the full segment, complete with an appearance by the race genie, since, “now that it’s been raised, it’s hard to put the genie back in the bottle”…

Mika Can’t Escape Lindsay… Yet

MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski, didn’t rip up the script this morning when anchoring a segment on the troubles of Lindsay Lohan. Brzezinski made international headlines when she refused to read stories related to the release of Paris Hilton from jail. Brzezinski, who does double duty as Joe Scarborough‘s newsier sidekick on Morning Joe and anchors MSNBC’s daytime hours, moderated a rather lengthy debate on whether celebrity rehab is a joke.

Now Cafferty Takes A Stand

First MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski refused to read, tried to burn, then shredded her script regarding the release of Paris Hilton from jail, now CNN’s Jack Cafferty is trying to take the high road on celebrity news, too. And, as in Brzezinski’s case, the on-air refusal is making international news.

>Update: Public Eye takes a closer look…

The “Gut” Feeling About Cable News

Variety columnist Brian Lowry writes about the cable news coverage of DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff‘s “gut feeling.”

“The news channels unwittingly reward nebulous plots with the sort of overwhelming response normally reserved for Paris Hilton.” Lowry writes. “More troubling, however, isn’t so much the news media’s tendency toward groupthink as nonthink — or ‘Televise now, think later…’”

GE Chief Pulls Plug On Paris, Brian Williams Helps

Late last week, it appeared NBC locked up Paris Hilton to a $1 million deal. But sources tell The New York Post that General Electric CEO & Chairman Jeff Immelt personally pulled the plug.

“This is the latest in a series of p.r. debacles for NBC – Imus and the Virginia Tech shooter tapes were the others,” said a highly placed source. “He [Immelt] had to weigh in.”

The Post also reports “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams had been lobbying both network and GE corporate honchos to back off Paris coverage.

NBC RESPONDS: NBC News spokesperson Allison Gollust responds to the story: it is “patently, unequivocally, totally false. He (Immelt) did not have a single conversation with anyone at NBC about Paris Hilton, and Brian Williams never communicated with him about it.”
