April Fools Virus Story Has 60 Minutes A Bit Fooled

U.S. News and World Report’s Paul Bedard reports on an error made in a 60 Minutes story about the Conficker Virus, which was reported to strike today, April Fools’ Day.

Bedard reports an image used in the story of the supposed Russian hackers was actually just a group of teenagers from Finland. CBS News has since corrected the error online.

TV Barn’s Aaron Barnhart had his own qualms with the piece — mainly, what was not reported.

Ailes Responds to Friel’s “Date” Joke

FNC Chairman & CEO Roger Ailes has responded to U.S. News and World Report’s Paul Bedard after Courtney Friel‘s joke about him in her SoupCans Q&A.

Friel was asked how she got her FNC job, and she responded: “Well…I went on a date with Roger Ailes…OMG — I’m joking!! Actually — the process was pretty standard. My agent sent FOX a DVD.”

Ailes response? “I’m glad Courtney Friel made this joke and not Neil Cavuto.”

Gupta Gets Endorsement From Controversial Former SG

There’s no update yet on whether Dr. Sanjay Gupta will leave from CNN and CBS to become the new Surgeon General, but he has won the endorsement from someone controversial who previously served in the role.

U.S. News & World Report’s Paul Bedard reports Jocelyn Elders says Gupta is right for the job, despite claims he is not experienced in the area. “I think he understands the problems,” she said. “He has enough well-trained, well-qualified public health people to teach him the things he needs to do the job.”

So what made Elders controversial? “The former surgeon general who supported teen masturbation and condom use calls the TV doctor an excellent communicator,” writes Bedard.

FOX News Sunday’s Best Ever in D.C.

FOX News Sunday had its best year ever in the Washington D.C. market, finishing as the #2 Sunday morning public affairs show in the important market behind well-established leader, NBC’s Meet the Press.

U.S. News and World Report’s Paul Bedard writes about the strong numbers in the nation’s capital.

“While it may sound silly that the anchors of these shows fight for the No. 2 spot in Washington, for their newsmaker bookers, it is very important,” writes Bedard. “The reason is simple: Guests most want to be seen in Washington where their friends, enemies, and reporters writing about what they say live.”

FOX News Sunday finished the year as the fourth-ranked Sunday morning public affairs show in national data.

Is CNN Still Relying on “Sources”?

Politico’s Michael Calderone writes about the four-hour news block to be hosted by John King starting next month, including how Howard Kurtz‘s program, “Reliable Sources” will fit in.

During Kurtz’ online chat today on WashingtonPost.com, he addressed the issue. “‘Reliable Sources’ will continue as an hour-long media program at 10 a.m. eastern on Sundays, just as it had been,” he wrote. “It will be part of this broader, four-hour block of programming anchored by John King (who, I might point out, was a heckuva reporter for the AP before he made the transition to television).”

Calderone reports Washington bureau chief David Bohrman said on a network conference call that Kurtz “would be used predominately in the 10 a.m. hour.”

During The Situation Room this afternoon, Wolf Blitzer talked with King about the new program. King said “Reliable Sources” would “absolutely” continue. Insiders tell us King will play a role in the program as well.

As for what to call the four-hour show, King said to Blitzer: “We’re working on the name now. We should have a contest.” We’re ahead of you John. TVNewser has already thought of that.
