Ben Sherwood Names 3 to Executive Team; Barbara Fedida, Susan Mercandetti return to ABC News

Four months into the top job at ABC News Ben Sherwood is building his executive team, and he’s tapped two former colleagues for leadership roles.

As we’ve been reporting, and is now official, Barbara Fedida is making a return to ABC News as SVP of talent and business. Fedida was talent VP at CBS News until February, departing amid an executive shuffle there. Fedida joined CBS News from ABC News in 2006, where she’d spent the previous 17 years, rising from production associate to producer to talent recruitment and development director.

Susan Mercandetti is also returning to ABC, after a run as executive editor at Random House. Mercandetti spent more than a decade at ABC News on “Good Morning America” and “Nightline.”

Sherwood is also bringing on Aol executive Joe Ruffolo as Senior VP of ABC News Digital. At Aol, Ruffolo was VP of AOL.com and Head of Current Programming. Ruffolo replaces Paul Slavin who, after 33 years with ABC News, left the company last week.

Fedida takes over for Amy Entelis who is leaving ABC News for Sucherman Consulting where she will be EVP of talent.

Fedida and Ruffolo start tomorrow. Mercandetti joins May 2.

Paul Slavin Leaving ABC News after 33 years

Paul Slavin, Senior VP of Digital for ABC News, is leaving the network where he began almost 33 years ago as a desk assistant.

From his start at ABC News in 1979, Slavin rose from associate producer on “20/20″, to producer for “This Week with David Brinkley” and later “World News Tonight” to senior producer and finally, in 2000, executive producer of the Peter Jennings broadcast. In 2004 he was named Senior VP overseeing global news coverage. Three years later he took over digital operations — ABCNews.com, ABC News Now, mobile and, most recently the network’s iPad app.

In a note to staff sent late today, ABC News president Ben Sherwood writes, “I have known Paul since we were both young producers here at ABC News and I have always admired his intelligence, news judgment and, of course, his dry humor.”

Slavin will stay on for a transitional period as a new Digital boss is named.

Poll: Who Will Replace David Westin at ABC News?

QM0906103.pngNow that David Westin has confirmed that he will be leaving ABC News, the speculation about his replacement can begin. Unlike anchors, who are high profile and in the public eye, TV news executives often stay behind the curtain.

We put together a list of some of our top contenders to the slot, including internal ABC Newsers Paul Slavin of ABC News Digital and Robin Sproul from the network’s DC bureau, as well as Emily Barr from ABC affiliate WLS Chicago. We also included some high profile picks from outside of the Disney family, like FNC’s Michael Clemente and CBS’ Rick Kaplan, both of whom used to work at ABC News.

Slavin: “We Still Have Lots of People Competing With Us”

slavin_2-26.jpgABC News SVP of Digital Paul Slavin (and TVNewser Summit panelist) is profiled by David Hirschman in a “So What Do You Do?” Q&A on mediabistro.com.

Slavin talks about paying for content online, what ABC News plans to do with social media and more. He also addresses the importance of keeping the ABC News brand alive on the Web:

The ABC News brand is also competing with “Joe’s News.” And when someone goes to search on Google [for a news item], the story from “Joe’s News” may show up right next to yours — and it may pop up there with a better headline or something else. So, yes, we have a huge advantage and a powerful, historic brand — and we have to emphasize that brand day-in and day-out to keep that moat around what it is that we do. But we still have lots of people competing with us.
