With Abdul On and Leno Out, Nightline Wins Late Night

ABC’s Nightline outperformed both NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Show with David Letterman in the Nielsen overnight metered markets last night. Nightline had a 3.7 HH rating, while Leno had a 3.1 and Letterman had a 2.7.

In younger viewers (A25-54) Nightline had a 1.8 to Leno’s 1.4 and Letterman’s 1.2.

Nightline’s Cynthia McFadden interviewed American Idol judge Paula Abdul while Jay Leno canceled his taping yesterday after he checked himself into the hospital.

The Susan Boyle Effect – Talent Show Judge Joins The Early Show

Holden_4.23.jpgMost Americans didn’t know who Amanda Holden was before last week. The “Britain’s Got Talent” judge crossed the pond, first on YouTube then onto the networks thanks to contestant Susan Boyle.

Well, CBS News apparently liked what they saw in Holden. TVNewser has learned Holden will be a part of The Early Show in early June.

The UK’s Mirror reports, “Network executives [have been] blown away by Amanda’s cut-glass British accent and warm personality.”

A source inside CBS tells TVNewser Holden has been invited to co-host the 8am hour of the show on Monday, June 1 which is the first weekday after the “Britain’s Got Talent” finale.

Holden was at the center of a CBS Evening News story Saturday when a new recording revealed Boyle’s not likely a one hit wonder.

What’s next, Paula Abdul takes over Nightline? Oh wait, that’s tonight.

MSNBC Idol?

New York Times TV critic Alessandra Stanley gives her list of “top contenders” for “most compelling television moments of the year.” The list of mostly television shows includes The Wire and Mad Men, but also MSNBC’s Morning Joe:

This MSNBC early-morning political klatch is oddly addictive, even though its hosts at times come off like a cable news version of ‘American Idol.’ Joe Scarborough is Simon Cowell, the Randy Jackson role is divided between Pat Buchanan and Mike Barnicle, and Mika Brzezinski is Paula Abdul, always seeking to say something nice about politicians the others mock. Willie Geist is their Ryan Seacrest, only much funnier.

Discuss.

The Ticker: Claman, Bartiromo, Abdul…

> FBN anchor Liz Claman has obtained an, “unpublished manuscript,” for a Bear Stearns tell-all book. Unlike the Vanity Fair account, an insider tells us the book only mentions CNBC in the context of David Faber‘s now-famous interview on March 12…and currently has Faber’s name spelled wrong.

> Another weekend, another CNBC anchor as Today show news reader. Last weekend was Erin Burnett (making her debut), this weekend was Maria Bartiromo.

> The New York Post reports on Paula Abdul‘s cancellation of her upcoming performance for the Today show Summer Concert Series, quoting a source, “She can’t perform live.” An NBC News spokesperson tells TVNewser, “She has been on the show in the past and we always welcome her back.”
