Keith Olbermann Returns to TV Talk on ‘This Week’

Keith Olbermann made his return to TV political commentary on ABC’s “This Week” this morning. Scandals, of the Secret Service and GSA varieties, the “dog wars,” the economy and 2012 polling were just some of the topics of discussion. This was a Sunday morning, not a Wednesday evening Olbermann: no raised voices, no demands, comity if not comedy. The most contentious it got was when Rob Portman‘s name came up as a potential Romney VP pick. Peggy Noonan liked the idea. Olbermann and Donna Brazile shook their heads. “Do you want another businessman on that ticket?” asked Olbermann. “Oh my goodness, yeah that would be just fine,” said Noonan, in the most calm, measured, non-cable news voice ever heard.

George Stephanopoulos ended the conversation talking about something Olbermann and conservative George Will agreed on: baseball, specifically the saving of Fenway Park which faced the wrecking ball in the 1990s and this week celebrated its 100th birthday.

While the show still focused on national politics and policy — and baseball — it originated from far outside the Beltway, at ABC News studios in New York.

Willie Geist’s ‘Freak Show’ Party

TVNewser went to Willie Geist‘s party Friday night to celebrate his book, “American Freak Show.” Geist is the Co-Host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and host of “Way to Early with Willie Geist.”

Some of the notable guests were the author’s father, CBS correspondent Bill Geist, president of MSNBC, Phil Griffin, as well as MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough, and Tamron Hall, Arianna Huffington, former GE CEO Jack Welch, billionaire Mort Zuckerman, CNBC anchor Erin Burnett, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan, NBC News president Steve Capus, and MSNBC political analyst Mark Halperin.

Fun, casual, and family-oriented, the party mimicked the spirit of the book, which is a satirical look at American politics and pop culture. In the basement of PJ Clarke’s, Geist’s friends, family, and colleagues ate everything from mini burgers and steak to oysters and lobster rolls.

TVNewser’s video is after the jump with comments from Geist’s dad, Hall, Scarborough, the author himself, and Geist’s uncle Bert. continued…

Wow! Lesley Stahl’s Online Surprise?: ‘That We’re a Success’

When will “60 Minutes” get another full-time female correspondent, Lesley Stahl?

“Good question,” says Stahl, who joined “60″ in 1991. “I have no idea. They [my bosses] know I think we should have more women. I think it would be wonderful. It would be great for the audience.”

Over 40 seasons, Stahl is only the third full-time woman correspondent to have broken into “60′s” boys club, along with Diane Sawyer and Meredith Vieira. At 67, she is the second-youngest member of the crew, behind Steve Kroft, 64.

With face time already at a premium, it may be a while before executive producer Jeff Fager adds a full-timer of either gender.

Still, Stahl says she frequently suggests names of “accomplished women,” not all of them correspondents. “This is kind of a running subject – who’s out there? It’s something that’s tossed around all the time.”

Stahl knows from tossing. Her demanding travel schedule limits her time for wowowow.com, the Web site she co-founded and co-owns.

A Cup of Sunday Morning Tea

The Tax Day Tea Parties were a topic on every Sunday morning show, but the way they were discussed varied between programs.

The most talked about tea party quote came from President Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod on CBS’ Face the Nation. “The thing that bewilders me is this President just cut taxes for 95% of the American people, so I think the teabags should be directed elsewhere,” he said. Later in the morning, Axelrod’s comments were discussed on CNN’s State of the Union.

On ABC’s This Week, the panel spent nearly nine minutes discussing the parties. “The coverage itself was so politically charged,” said Peggy Noonan. “Liberal newspapers were subtly dismissive, conservative cable news houses were more than subtly supportive.”

David Gregory brought the tea parties up several times on NBC’s Meet the Press, including during his interview with National Economic Council director Larry Summers. “I’ve been surprised by these tea parties,” he said.

On FOX News Sunday, Chris Wallace asked his guests, Sens. Lindsey Graham and Claire McCaskill, for their take, but also brought it up during the panel.

Brit Hume noted it was “ignored by some in the media,” while Juan Williams said, “I think a lot of it is media generated.”

And on Reliable Sources, a heated debate took place over the tea parties. Click continued to see the clip…

continued…

Obama Meets With Conservatives (And Liberals) Ahead Of Inauguration

Larry Kudlow revealed a few details this morning on “The Call” about the off-the-record meeting last night between President-elect Barack Obama and many prominent conservatives held at ABC News contributor George Will‘s house.

“This was a good conservative group, and we just had a great back and forth,” he said. “And he wants to keep the dialogue going with conservatives.”

Also at the dinner were Peggy Noonan, Paul Gigot and FNC contributors Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer. “He is charming, he is terribly smart, bright, well-informed, he has a great sense of humor,” said Kudlow.

Meanwhile Politico’s Michael Calderone writes about a meeting today between Obama and liberal commentators. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow was among those in attendance.

The Ticker (The Morning Show Edition): CNN A.M., 4th Hour, Joe-Prah…

> The morning after the election, viewers flocked to CNN. From 6am-9amET, American Morning topped the other cable news networks with 2.124 million Total Viewers. That compares to Fox and Friends’ 2.103 million and Morning Joe’s 1.212 million. Among A25-54 viewers, CNN remained #1 with 1.021 million, followed by Fox and Friends’ 756k and Morning Joe’s 585k.

> Last week, the Today show’s fourth hour had its best week in eight months. Week-to-week, the Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb-anchored hour was up 14% in Total Viewers. Must have been Kathie Lee dressed as the Big Bad Wolf. We’ll have the Morning Show Ratings post tomorrow.

> It appears Oprah Winfrey likes her some Morning Joe. As she introduced Peggy Noonan on her show yesterday, Oprah called Noonan, “a regular guest on ‘Morning Joe,’ love that show.” Later, she even referenced the show: “The other day on ‘Morning Joe’…” Joe Scarborough‘s reaction this morning: “I’m humbled.”

CNN/TIME Politics ’08: Greenfield, Graydon and More

The CNN/TIME Politics ’08 conference kicked off yesterday with Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes saying, “There has never been and never will be a substitute for quality.”

TVNewser twittered the first panel, moderated by Campbell Brown, and featuring this line of from Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter that got the biggest laughs (on trying to book Gore Vidal on TV): “They want him to talk about Marilyn Monroe, he wants to talk about James Monroe.”

The second panel, moderated by the New York Times’ Frank Rich, featured CBS’ Jeff Greenfield, journalist/author Peggy Noonan, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin and others. Greenfield brought up the way the journalist-politician trust has changed. He reminisced how Lyndon Johnson once said, “If I’ve lost Walter Cronkite, I’ve lost the country,” regarding Vietnam. “Who could you say that about today?” he asked.

Noonan used some descriptive language to talk TV news options. “If you want to take a warm bath in George Bush‘s greatness, you will go straight to Fox,” she said. “If you want to take a cold shower in ‘George Bush is the devil,’ you will go straight to (Keith) Olbermann.”

After the panel, Greenfield grabbed a few of the panelists, including moderator Rich (pictured) for a potential CBS package. We also turned the tables and interviewed Greenfield (after the jump).

Two final notes about the TVNewser twittered final panel, featuring a lively interview between Anderson Cooper and Lewis Black (and the audience). If there is a way to get video of Black’s total excoriating of an audience member who blamed big government for the country’s problems, we’ll search for it. Black later somewhat apologized, and said he only got so worked up because of something that happened earlier in the day. But it did leave Cooper slightly uncomfortable. “This isn’t awkward for me at all,” joked Cooper.

Also, an audience member asked the CNN anchor if he ever wanted to just scream his opinion about an issue he was covering. “The last thing anyone wants to hear is some overpaid, blow-dried news anchor giving their opinion,” Cooper said. “I think there’s enough of those already.”

Click continued to see TVNewser’s interview with Greenfield, who talks about the CBS web cast, his prediction for a potentially-long Election Night ’08 and more…

CNN/TIME Politics ’08: Late Afternoon Sessions

The 10th floor of the Time Warner Center was packed with journalists, college students and others today, as CNN and Time Magazine co-hosted their Politics 2008 conference.

TVNewser twittered two of the sessions, and we’ll have more on these and others tomorrow.

With three panels going on at a time in some instances, the late afternoon saw a split of two active sessions. In a religion and politics session, CNN contributors Roland Martin and Amy Holmes joined others in the discussion. When moderator Steve Waldman introduced Martin, identifying him as from the “left,” Martin immediately countered. “That introduction is part of the problem with the religion conversation,” he said. He also had some qualms with the name of the panel, which called for a discussion of the “‘new’ new rules” of religion and politics.

Holmes, who described herself as both a “non-believer” and a “blue state girl with red state politics,” said race has been a hot issue during the campaign, but religion has been less covered. “The media loves to talk about race, but I would ask to keep your eye on the religion issue,” she said.

In another room, CNN’s Candy Crowley, former Hillary Clinton strategist Mark Penn, Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin and others were discussing the media’s performance in the 2008 campaign. The overwhelming response — not good.

“The press is suffering,” said Penn. “Now they’re seen as increasingly partisan.” Crowley was asked if “people hiss at you” on the campaign trails. “Sure, but that’s not new,” she said.

The most biting critique was Halperin’s, who moves between ABC and all the cablers regularly as an analyst. He described the “irresponsible job the press has done when given access” during this election cycle. “We’ve done a bad job,” he said.

Below, TVNewser’s interview with Halperin after the panel. He expands on his critique of the media, and we ask what he thinks of being cited often in the first session as someone who understands new media during the first panel (and he gives some props to TVNewser):

Click continued to see which panelist appeared to be the most popular today, according to some unscientific research this afternoon…

continued…

Is Web Intolerance “Hurting America?”

Phil Donahue may be long gone from his daytime shows, (or his MSNBC prime time show for that matter). But he was back in the form of Joe Scarborough today at a Huffington Post-sponsored panel about how new media are impacting the 2008 race. The panel was made up of members of old and new media as well as some stradeling both.

MNSBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinkski moderated the panel which touched on issues of blogs as a source of breaking political news, the vitriol that exists on some left and right wing blogs and the concern that the anonymity provided to blog commenters only fuels the hate.

The panel was filled with the likes of Arianna Huffington, Laura Ingraham, Tony Blankley, Frank Luntz and Peggy Noonan. But moderator Scarbourough took the mics into the crowd getting the thoughts of Joe Klein, Margaret Carlson and his MSNBC colleague Tucker Carlson.

Carlson, who was personally called out four years ago by Jon Stewart for hosting a show that was “hurting America,” today said intolerance on the Web is “what is hurting America.”

“And I’m saying this as the former host of Crossfire,” he told the audience of about 100 people at the Nicollet Island Inn in Minneapolis.

We panned the crowd before the panel discussion got underway. And after the jump, more pictures.
