How Charlie Rose Backed Into Alec Baldwin Interview About Paparazzi Scuffle

Alec Baldwin went on Charlie Rose‘s PBS show last night to talk about his new movie, “To Rome with Love.” But the conversation quickly turned to Baldwin’s incident earlier in the day with a Daily News photographer who claims Baldwin punched him as Baldwin and his fiancee left a the marriage license bureau in New York City.

Rose posed the question, first discussing issues of fame and personal privacy, then getting at the heart of the matter. Appropriate for this setting.

Rose: “When you have an incident like you did, is it because you get upset somebody’s invading your privacy?”

Baldwin: “The guy almost hit me with a camera.”

Rose: “What happened?”

Baldwin: “There was a person in front of me, and I was blocking him and he lunged and he almost hit me in the teeth with the lens of the camera. And I pushed him away.”

Daily News photographer Marcos Santos tells it differently, and has filed an assault charge.

Baldwin and his “Rome” co-star Penelope Cruz went on to talk about the challenges of fame, a subplot in the Woody Allen movie. Baldwin says social media — which he used multiple times yesterday defending himself — exacerbates the problem.

“You have your political opposition and they get on the internet, and within 30 minutes the misrepresentation of the story is out there,” said Baldwin. “You go on Twitter or Fox Nation says, ‘Baldwin punches photographer.’ No true.”

Despite starring in a show on NBC, Baldwin has recently criticized “Today” for its coverage of him and his fiancee.

The network morning shows all reported the incident. “Today” and “GMA” did not use any of Baldwin’s interview with Rose, choosing a statement from his publicist Matthew Hiltzik instead. “CBS This Morning,” which Rose hosts, excerpted it at length.

Oscars Morning: GMA Tweets, Parties Through the Night

champion_2-23.jpgIn addition to co-hosting the official Red Carpet pre-show, Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts interviewed several Oscars winners after the ceremony last night. Roberts talked with Sean Penn, Penelope Cruz and Danny Boyle, while Sam Champion talked to the cast of Slumdog Millionaire.

Champion was on the party beat last night, and was tweeting from the events throughout the night. A sample: “At the slumdog party- surviving on Red Bull and Red Velvet cupcakes- waiting for the winning ensemble to arrive.”

roberts_2-23.jpgMeanwhile Roberts had contributions from more than 10,000 viewers who helped decide on her Oscars gown. The winning dress was from J. Crew, but Roberts also made a change for GMA so she could sample the other great options.

> Update: According to the preliminary ratings, the telecast averaged a 23.3 household rating and 35 share. That’s up 6% from last year’s all-time low of 21.9/33. But down from 2007 ceremony, which averaged a 27.7 in the metered markets, and the 2006 broadcast, which had a 27.1.

The Ticker: Super Ratings, Oscar Nominees, Grammy Special…

> NBC’s broadcast of the Super Bowl averaged a 42.1 household rating and 65 share last night, down 6% from last year’s 44.7/66. Last year’s Giants/Patriots game was the highest rated Super Bowl in 20 years. Last night’s game was on par with the Colts/Bears 2007 Super Bowl. The Cardinals/Steelers game peaked with a 48.0 rating at 10pmET in the final, exciting moments of the Steelers’ win.

> Over the next few weeks, “Nightline” anchors sit down with some of this year’s Oscar nominees. Tonight, Cynthia McFadden interviews Meryl Streep who is nominated for best actress for her performance as Sister Aloysius in “Doubt.” Upcoming interviews include Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, and Penelope Cruz.

> “Put a grown man in a leotard and that’s just already funny,” says Justin Timberlake to Katie Couric about a recent SNL skit (which has been pulled from YouTube and here’s why). The interview is part of Couric’s All-Access Grammy special this Wednesday on CBS. Couric also talks with Lil’ Wayne, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.
