The book, Shooting Straight: Guns, Gays, God, and George Clooney, will focus on Morgan’s tenure at CNN.

The AP has details:

Morgan, in a statement issued by Gallery, promised a “warts and all” account of life at CNN and said the book would be like “‘The Newsroom’ on steroids,” referring to the HBO series.

The book will be centered around real-world news events, written in a diary format a la his last memoir, The Insider. The announcement comes the same day it was announced that ABC’s Robin Roberts is writing a memoir.

On FNC’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” Bill O’Reilly sent producer Jesse Watters went to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where he asked attendees whether there was bias in the media. Al Roker, Les Moonves, Bob Schieffer, Chris Matthews and Piers Morgan were all among his “victims.”

    On MSNBC ‘s “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” the MSNBC host made the White House press corps the subject of his ire. In a lengthy, 16-minute (!) segment, O’Donnell argued that for the American reporters, the conferences “are more about the press than the President.”

The network also showed the most growth among its competition, up double digits among Total Viewers and triple digits in the A25-54 demographic compared to the same month last year.

    The ratings for April 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

    • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 920,000 Total Viewers / 340,000 A25-54
    • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 638,000 Total Viewers / 228,000 A25-54

    The month of April was a busy one for all the cable news networks, with extended coverage of the Boston marathon bombing and subsequent manhunt as well as the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas. Every hour of CNN programming was up double or triple digits compared to April 2012, which was an especially slow month for the network. In Total Day, CNN was up +79% in Total Viewers and +109% in the A25-54 demographic. In primetime, the network was up +80% and +128%, respectively.

    The 6pmET hour of “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” showed the most growth of any cable news program in April, up +124% in Total Viewers and +224% in A25-54 viewers. “OutFront with Erin Burnett” posted its best month since launching in 2011, growing +145% in Total Viewers and +221% in the demo year-over-year. Piers Morgan‘s 9pmET program was also up significantly, growing +71% and +119%, respectively.

    Two newcomers for CNN — Jake Tapper and Anthony Bourdain — also boosted their respective timeslots. Tapper’s 4pmET program is up +54% in Total Viewers and +108% in the A25-54 demographic compared to the same month last year, when the hour was home to “The Situation Room.” Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” boosted the Sunday 9pmET hour by +122% and +440%, respectively.

    “Anderson Cooper 360″ averaged 1.16 million Total Viewers and 431,000 A25-54 viewers for the month, making it the top rated show on CNN in both ratings measurements.

    As the sun set over the Hudson River and the High Line park, guests sipped wine and nibbled on hummus, cheese and skewers of shrimp and scallops. NY1 traffic anchor Jamie Shupak, Stelter’s girlfriend, organized the affair.

    “Matt Lauer and Ann Curry send their regrets,” Stelter quipped in his remarks. Indeed, NBC’s “Today” was not represented at the party, though there were plenty of notable TV news attendees.

    ABC News seemed to have the largest contingent, led by president Ben Sherwood, and joined by senior VP of content and development James Goldston, and senior VP of communications Jeffrey Schneider. CBS News was represented by chairman Jeff Fager and “CBS This Morning” co-host Charlie Rose (pictured below). NY1′s morning news anchor Pat Kiernan was there, as was CNN “Piers Morgan Live” EP (and former “Today” EP) Jonathan Wald. Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley, New York Post publisher Jesse Angelo and Gawker founder Nick Denton were all spotted in the crowd.

    Still, when big news breaks, we instinctively look to CNN. We want CNN to be good, to be worthy of its moment. That impulse took a beating last week. On Wednesday at 1:45 p.m., the correspondent John King reported that a suspect had been arrested. It was a big scoop that turned out to be false.

    CNN may have made the most prominent error, but every TV network and media outlet made errors. The issue, as Carr does hint at indirectly, is that when there is big breaking news, the kimono is opened up, and the messy and often-wrong process of gathering news is revealed for everyone to see.

    The networks are preparing for extended coverage throughout the day and CBS News has already scheduled a primetime special at 9pmET anchored by Scott Pelley. Also, “Evening News” will be expanded to an hour.

    More: “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” will expand to a full hour tonight. “Rock Center” will dedicate the full live hour (10pmET/9pmCT) to the investigation.

Please Get Out of Here’ A fire and explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, TX, about 80 miles south of Dallas, is keeping CNN live on the air into the Midnight hour. The news broke around 10:30pm as cable news anchors were focused on the investigation into the Boston Marathon blasts. CNN’s Anderson Cooper covered the news during the 10pm hour, and remained with the story through the 11pm with Erin Burnett, then Piers Morgan live at Midnight. Fox News and MSNBC aired cut-ins but remained with taped programming, as of this writing. Update: MSNBC went into rolling coverage around 12:15am with Mara Schiavocampo and, later, Richard Lui anchoring until 5am. Fox News’ Elizabeth Prann anchored overnight coverage beginning at 12:38 until “Fox & Friends First” began at 4:30am. ABC’s “Nightline” was live for the East Coast, and then did a live update for the West Coast (3:35 am ET) with Terry Moran anchoring from Boston and Steve Osunsami reporting from Texas.

    As the fire raged, a driver pulled out his camera phone and began recording. He wasn’t expecting what happened next. After the explosion shakes his vehicle, you hear screams and then his daughter: “Dad, I can’t hear. I can’t hear. Please get out of here.” Watch here.

    An eyewitness told DallasNews.com “It was a small fire and then water sprayed the ammonia nitrate, and it exploded just like the Oklahoma City bomb.” The 18th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing is tomorrow. In fact, this part of Texas was in the news 20 years ago this week, when the final siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco began, resulting in the deaths of 76 people. West, TX is about 20 miles north of Waco.

    • That 78-year-old marathoner seen over and over today in news coverage crumbling to the ground when the first bomb went off, finished the race. Bill Iffrig, who spoke with CNN’s Piers Morgan, got up and walked the final 12 feet, coming in second in his division.
    • Matt Lauer was a part of tonight’s NBC special at 10pmET live from Boston talking with eyewitnesses and a runner. He’ll be live for the “Today” show tomorrow. Ann Curry participated too, interviewing a young runner who crossed the finish line about :25 seconds before the first blast.
    • Katie Couric and her crew will turn around a show devoted to the attacks in Boston tomorrow. Couric will host from her studio in New York.
    • Many of the eyewitnesses making the media rounds tonight are the journalists who covered the race, including Boston Globe reporter David Abel and Boston.com sports producer Steve Silva who were at the finish line covering the race. Silva’s ground level video of the first blast has been some of the most widely viewed.
