Sunday Show Ratings: September 23

A split decision for the Sunday shows on September 23: CBS’ “Face the Nation” wins in Total Viewers and NBC’s “Meet the Press” wins in the A25-54 demographic.

ABC’s “This Week” was third, “Fox News Sunday” was fourth and Univision’s “Al Punto” was fifth.

The shows are up across the board compared to the same week last year, with ABC’s “This Week” up the most: +25% in Total Viewers and +28% in A25-54 viewers.

Cable replays of “Fox News Sunday” averaged a combined 1,985,000 Total Viewers and 384,000 A25-54 viewers.

“Face the Nation” is based on the first half-hour only, as the full contiguous hour airs in just 47% of the country.

The numbers for September 23:

Network Program Total Viewers A25-54
CBS
“Face the Nation” 3.12M 898K
NBC
“Meet the Press” 2.96M 902K
ABC “This Week” 2.48M 714K
FOX “Fox News Sunday” 1.29M 501K
Univision “Al Punto” 828K 380K

Despite NFL and Emmy Competition, ’60 Minutes’ Powers To Number Six For Week

Sunday could have been a tough night in the ratings for CBS’ “60 Minutes.”

Despite interviews with President Obama and Mitt Romney, as well as a huge NFL lead-in, the newsmagazine was up against a big NFL game on NBC, and the Emmys on ABC.

Despite the tough competition (and likely thanks to the NFL lead-in and the big interviews), “60 Minutes” did just fine, drawing 12.6 million total viewers, enough to make it the number six primetime program for the week. For comparison, the Emmys drew 13.3 million viewers, while “Sunday Night Football” drew 21.3 million.

Sunday Show Ratings: September 2

A big win for “This Week” on September 2. The ABC political affairs show takes the top spot in both ratings measurements for the first time since August 2009, beating NBC’s “Meet the Press” by just +2,000 Total Viewers and +65,000 A25-54 viewers.

CBS’ “Face the Nation,” which was shortened to 30 minutes from its usual hour, placed third. The program was preempted in 2% of national ratings markets, and aired at unusual times in other markets, due to the network’s coverage of the U.S. Open.

Compared to the same week last year, “This Week” was the only show to post gains in both ratings measurements: +23% in Total Viewers, +3% in the demographic. “Meet the Press” was up in Total Viewers but down in the demo. “Face the Nation,” “Fox News Sunday” and “Al Punto” were down across the board.

Cable replays of “Fox News Sunday” averaged a combined 2,972,000 Total Viewers and 580,000 A25-54 viewers.

The numbers for September 2:

Network Program Total Viewers A25-54
ABC
“This Week” 2.728M 766K
NBC
“Meet the Press” 2.726M 701K
CBS “Face the Nation” 2.246M 660K
FOX “Fox News Sunday” 1.070M 425K
Univision “Al Punto” 710K 296K

NBC Wins Final Night of DNC; CNN #1 on Cable

NBC wins the final night of the Democratic National Convention drawing more than 7 million viewers for its two-hour primetime special last night. On cable, CNN won its first convention night in both primetime, and the crucial 10pm hour. After MSNBC took night one, and they split night two, on night three, CNN won in both Total Viewers and A25-54 demo viewers.

  • Cable News Primetime (8-11pm). Night three of the DNC, Sept. 6, 2012

CNN: 4,105,216 total viewers (1,557,165 in 25-54)
MSNBC: 3,610,875 total viewers (1,289,781 in 25-54)
FNC: 2,659,051 total viewers (672,749 in 25-54)

While NBC led the way, cable networks CNN and MSNBC were watched by more viewers than ABC and CBS.

  • Sept. 6, 2012. Night three of the DNC:

NBC (9-11:11pm): 7.377 viewers (3.088M in A25-54)
CNN (10-11pm): 5.562 viewers (2.201M in A25-54)
MSNBC (10-11pm): 4.547 viewers (1,776M in A25-54)
ABC (10-11:11pm): 3.995 viewers (1.524M in A25-54)
CBS (10-11:12pm): 3.294 viewers (1.383M in A25-54)
FNC (10-11pm): 2.855 viewers (808K in 25-54)

Here’s What Happens When You Win in the Ratings

Today at MSNBC HQ, cupcakes for all. The occasion? MSNBC’s win Tuesday in primetime, beating CNN and Fox News for the first time ever when all three networks were in head-to-head programming. In the 10pm hour, MSNBC also beat ABC and CBS. Wednesday numbers should be out in a few hours. And because NBC did not air a 10pm special due to the Giants-Cowboys game, MSNBC might have an even better night.
