Despite NFL and Emmy Competition, ’60 Minutes’ Powers To Number Six For Week

Sunday could have been a tough night in the ratings for CBS’ “60 Minutes.”

Despite interviews with President Obama and Mitt Romney, as well as a huge NFL lead-in, the newsmagazine was up against a big NFL game on NBC, and the Emmys on ABC.

Despite the tough competition (and likely thanks to the NFL lead-in and the big interviews), “60 Minutes” did just fine, drawing 12.6 million total viewers, enough to make it the number six primetime program for the week. For comparison, the Emmys drew 13.3 million viewers, while “Sunday Night Football” drew 21.3 million.

Sunday Show Ratings: September 2

A big win for “This Week” on September 2. The ABC political affairs show takes the top spot in both ratings measurements for the first time since August 2009, beating NBC’s “Meet the Press” by just +2,000 Total Viewers and +65,000 A25-54 viewers.

CBS’ “Face the Nation,” which was shortened to 30 minutes from its usual hour, placed third. The program was preempted in 2% of national ratings markets, and aired at unusual times in other markets, due to the network’s coverage of the U.S. Open.

Compared to the same week last year, “This Week” was the only show to post gains in both ratings measurements: +23% in Total Viewers, +3% in the demographic. “Meet the Press” was up in Total Viewers but down in the demo. “Face the Nation,” “Fox News Sunday” and “Al Punto” were down across the board.

Cable replays of “Fox News Sunday” averaged a combined 2,972,000 Total Viewers and 580,000 A25-54 viewers.

The numbers for September 2:

Network Program Total Viewers A25-54
ABC
“This Week” 2.728M 766K

“Meet the Press” 2.726M 701K
CBS “Face the Nation” 2.246M 660K
FOX “Fox News Sunday” 1.070M 425K
