Laurel J. Richie Named WNBA President

Marking executive Laurel J. Richie has been appointed President of the WNBA, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced Thursday.

Richie will assume the day-to-day operations of the women’s basketball league on May 16 and she will report to NBA Deputy Commissioner and COO Adam Silver.

“The WNBA is comprised of the best female basketball players in the world and I’m looking forward to working with these talented women as they strive to achieve their professional goals both on and off the court,” said Richie. “I am fortunate to have worked with an organization as inspiring as Girl Scouts, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to build upon the successes of the WNBA and help grow this league into a world-class business.” Read more

Esquire Writer Talks NBA With Chris Rock

Esquire writer Scott Raab has been out of the limelight since he was banned from Miami Heat home game last November.

But the Cleveland native recently interviewed comedian Chris Rock for Esquire‘s March issue and the two discussed the NBA:

On James’ leaving: I don’t even see what the big story is. The owner’s an idiot. Why is the owner an idiot? I said it on television – you can look it up. I was at a Lakers game – they were probably playing the Knicks. It was on TNT, and Kenny(Smith) and Mark Jackson and whoever interviewed me on the sidelines, they asked me about LeBron. I said, “They should trade him.” I said it, on national television….Why would you think he’s coming back? People move from Cleveland to Miami every… day. They don’t move from Miami to Cleveland. Super Bowl XLV Fans In Temporary Seating To Receive Refund Or Free Ticket

Another day, another Super Bowl XLV refund.

Today’s lucky fans are 2,000 people that were in temporary seating sections and faced significant delays in gaining pre-game access to their seats due to installation woes.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the 2,000 fans are elegible for: 1) a refund of the face value of their ticket, OR 2) one free ticket to one Super Bowl game of their choice.

MLB.com Pulls Quote From Mark Buehrle About Michael Vick

MLB.com published a story on Wednesday about Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle being passionate about animal rights.

When the topic of quarterback Michael Vick came up, Buehrle didn’t hold back on his thoughts.

“He had a great year and a great comeback, but there were times where we watched the game and I know it’s bad to say, but there were times where we hope he gets hurt,” Buehrle said. “Everything you’ve done to these dogs, something bad needs to happen to these guys.”

Buehrle’s quote though mysteriously disappeared from the story after it was published, leaving many to wonder if the quote was off-the-record or if someone from the White Sox (or Major League Baseball) had it pulled. Read more

Ron Franklin Sues ESPN For Wrongful Termination

Announcer Ron Franklin has filed a lawsuit against ESPN for wrongful termination in his home city of Austin, Texas.

Franklin confirmed the report to Michael McCarthy of the USA Today but declined to comment on how much he’s seeking in damages or details of the lawsuit.

Earlier this month, Franklin was pulled from a radio broadcast after making derogatory comments towards colleague Jeannie Edwards.

Two days after the story broke, Franklin was fired from ESPN after 25 years.
