For MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry, wrapping up her presidential campaign coverage in the Windy City was a trip down memory lane. Several years ago, Perry taught political science at the University of Chicago, and through mutual school ties met the not-yet-famous Barack and Michelle Obama.

“I was here as a young, untenured faculty member,” Perry told TVNewser during an interview on Election Day. “And I can remember that [now-presidential adviser] Valerie Jarrett and [now-Ariel Investments CEO/Obama supporter]” John Rodgers would have African-American faculty over for dinner, just to kind of provide us with support. Now they are kind of the inside team in the Oval Office.”

It was during that time that Harris-Perry began providing political commentary for Chicago PBS station WTTW and CW affiliate WGN. “In many ways, it’s when I fell in love with morning television.”

Harris-Perry, now a professor at Tulane in New Orleans, has hosted her eponymous weekend morning show on MSNBC since February.

Another former Chicagoan in town for Election 2012 was Ray Suarez, who reported for NBC O&O WMAQ for more than seven years, in the late 80s and early 90s. before leaving for Washington,

PBS’ Election Night Plans

Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff will anchor PBS’ election coverage on Tuesday night from 8pm-midnight. The pair will be joined by “NewsHour” analysts Mark Shields and David Brooks, and Jeffrey Brown will talk about national trends with political editor Christina Bellantoni and Stuart Rothenberg. Hari Sreeivasan will man the “NewsHour” digital map center.

Senior correspondents Ray Suarez and Margaret Warner will report from the candidates’ respective campaign headquarters in Chicago and Boston. “NewsHour” will also feature comprehensive election coverage on its website, which will transition to a special election day homepage with a live blog dedicated to campaign news.

On this Christmas Day, the folks at the PBS NewsHour’s The Rundown blog present a video roundup of song. It’s a compilation of performances of the famous “Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” chorus from George Frideric Handel‘s “Messiah”, with clips provided by local PBS stations and from people worldwide on YouTube.

NewsHour reporters, producers and other staffers sing along, including Jeffrey Brown, Gwen Ifill, and Margaret Warner - plus two solos by Ray Suarez.

PBS Sets ‘NewsHour’ Election Plans

PBS “NewsHour” has announced its coverage plans for the 2010 midterm elections. Jim Lehrer will anchor a special election night broadcast from 11 PM to midnight, with Judy Woodruff, Gwen Ifill and David Chalian joining analysts Mark Shields, David Brooks and Stuart Rothenberg.

Correspondents in the studio and field will include Hari Sreenivasan, Jeff Brown, Margaret Warner, Ray Suarez, Spencer Micheals and Kwame Holman.

Because PBS does not have the time that the cable news channels have to dedicate to election coverage, “NewsHour” will also have a one-hour webcast preceding the broadcast, which Lehrer will also anchor.

Newsers Return to Haiti Six Months After the Quake

July 12 will mark the six month anniversary of the tragic earthquake in Haiti and newsers including CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Sanjay Gupta, who were both closely associated with their coverage of the disaster earlier this year, are returning to the country for the occasion.

Cooper and Gupta — along with Gary Tuchman and Ivan Watson — will anchor from Port Au Prince on Monday and Tuesday of next week and will revisit some of the stories they covered in the disaster’s aftermath. Cooper, who last reported there on February 12, was the first anchor in Haiti following the earthquake and spent nearly a month anchoring “AC360″ from the region. Cooper’s been on the road quite a bit in the first half of 2010, also anchoring from the Gulf Coast regularly over the past six weeks.

Additionally, David Muir will return to Haiti for ABC News starting tonight for a series of reports called “World News Returns to Haiti,” which continues through the anniversary on the 12th.

NBC News Chief Science and Health Correspondent Robert Bazell returned today to report on the anniversary for “Nightly News,” revisiting hospitals he profiled for the newscast.

Matt Frei returns for a “BBC World News America” special edition on Monday.

“PBS NewsHour” Senior Correspondent Ray Suarez returns for a multi-part series of reports from Haiti each day from Monday-Thursday.

‘PBS NewsHour’ to Launch with New ‘Patchwork’ Series

When the “PBS NewsHour” relaunches Monday without Jim Lehrer‘s name in the title, the program will also debut a new series called “Patchwork Nation.”

The five-part series, reported by Ray Suarez, runs all week and explores the impact developments in the economy have had on specific communities, starting with Philadelphia on Monday. After that, it’s Ann Arbor, MI; Sioux Center, IA; Eagle, CO; and Licoln City, OR.

PBS’ Newshour Looks to be “More Engaging” With Format Makeover

The NYTimes’ Elizabeth Jensen writes about the changes coming to PBS’ long-running nightly newscast, “The Newshour with Jim Lehrer.”

Mr. Lehrer, who will turn 75 next Tuesday, isn’t stepping down. But in September the program will be retitled “PBS NewsHour” and return to a two-anchor format, which it had until 1995, when Robert MacNeil left.
Linda Winslow, the executive producer of “NewsHour,” said the changes will be made for a simple reason: “What we were trying to accomplish was a more engaging program.”

Jensen reports that Lehrer will be joined by one of three co-anchors from the show’s current team: Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff or Jeffrey Brown. Winslow is quick to add, “This is not a succession plan in disguise.” Having two anchors will “shake things up a little bit,” says Lehrer. The show will also add a newsreader, much like the broadcast network morning shows.

The one-hour show will also be formatted into segments for those who can’t, or don’t watch all the way through. Winslow says, “Each piece has to be individual and watchable.” Jensen reports the show will also merge its online and broadcast news desks, and send correspondents Margaret Warner and Ray Suarez into the field more often.

“Newspapers are thinning, and television has its own crisis,” says Lehrer. “I became a fanatic about the idea that those of us who are in the business of serious journalism, we have to do more.”

Election Night: PBS & BBC

The big four broadcasters and cable news networks will keep us waiting a bit longer before they reveal what’s in store on election night. As one insider told TVNewser last week, “you think we want to give our play book to the other guys?” “No,” was our answer.

Anyway, we do have the plans for PBS and BBC.

• Jim Lehrer anchors PBS’ election coverage with political analysis from Mark Shields & David Brooks. Senior Correspondents Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff, Ray Suarez, Jeffrey Brown, and Margaret Warner contribute. Coverage begins at 9pmET and will continue until midnight or until a winner is announced.

• BBC has tapped British-born but red-blooded American Ted Koppel to join them on the set of the Washington Bureau. Coverage begins at 6pmET and will be anchored by David Dimbleby along with Matt Frei, anchor of BBC World News America.
