Preview of Sculpture of Mariners Broadcaster Niehaus

MLB.com has a cool story (with video that can’t yet be embedded, this being MLB) that discusses the ongoing work of sculptor Lou Cella as he completes a rendering of beloved longtime Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus, who died Nov. 10. Cella is halfway finished with a clay foundation which will then be cast in bronze. The Mariners plan to install the sculpture in the outfield concourse at Safeco Field sometime in September.

The piece has Niehaus sitting at a broadcast desk with his scorebook opened to the game of Oct. 8, 1995. You might recall that as “The Double” game by Edgar Martinez. Cella used Niehaus’ actual scorebook and the engraving is a clear reproduction of his actual notes and scoring from that memorable day.

Fans will be able to sit next to Niehaus on the bench on the sculpture, as the Mariners want it to be an interactive piece given Niehaus’ open relationship with fans around the Pacific Northwest.

Liberty Bowl Moving From ESPN To ABC

The 53rd annual Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31 will be televised on ABC instead of ESPN.

The bowl game match up between a representative from the Southeastern Conference and the Conference USA champion was once a staple on ABC between 1966-1980.

Thanks to solid ratings and a an attractive time slot, ABC decided to once again air the bowl game, which will gain 16 million households as a result.

“We’ve enjoyed being on ESPN the last two decades,”AutoZone Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart said. “But the chance to have our game on ABC, which is Disney-owned like ABC, raises us to another level. With ABC, we’ll have an additional 16 million households available to us so we can spread the message of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”

Bill Simmons' new website, Grantland, offers preview with works of two female authors

Bill Simmons‘ upcoming sports and pop culture website, Grantland.com, has posts up today by two of the writers who will be contributing to the new site: Molly Lambert and Katie Baker. Judge for yourself whether this represents the future of sports and pop culture observation.

Lambert was most recently the managing editor of ThisRecording, and Baker has been a contributor to the New York Times Magazine, Deadspin and The Good Men Project Magazine.

Molly Lambert:Looking at the best and worst of a summer movie season filled with offerings that sound vaguely familiar.

Katie Baker: Stunning trades, shotgun marriages and a season on the brink of greatness. After a decade of dysfunction and delusion, Katie Baker is ready to commit
