Chris Cuomo Scores Big Interviews ‘Despite All The Money Being Offered By Others’

With the excitement over “Good Morning America’s” ratings and Nik Wallenda‘s wire-walk over Niagara Falls, recognition of some of ABC’s recent big gets seems to have fallen by the wayside.

Three of those gets, were all gotten by “20/20″ anchor Chris Cuomo and his team: Cuomo’s interview with Rielle Hunter airs Friday night; the pre-sentence interview with Rutger’s student Dharun Ravi in March; and the October sitdown with Stephanie Madoff Mack, former daughter-in-law of Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff.

“We worked hard at securing three of the biggest bookings so far this year,” Cuomo tells TVNewser, “despite all the money being offered by others, which is of course forbidden at ABC News.”

Last July, ABC News stopped paying licensing fees in order to score big interviews. The revelation that the network paid  $200,000 to the family of Casey Anthony, was the beginning of the end of the practice at ABC.

“It’s rewarding to know that ABC’s reputation for tough but fair interviews and our unrivaled distribution on multiple platforms are still the most powerful incentives to sit down with us,” says Cuomo.

Chris Cuomo Gets Interview with Rielle Hunter

ABC’s Chris Cuomo gets the first post-trial interview with Rielle Hunter, the former mistress of John Edwards.

In an interview to air next Friday on “20/20,” Hunter speaks candidly about her current relationship with Edwards, his relationship with their daughter Quinn, and what she would have said if called as a witness in his corruption trial. Hunter is out with a book, “What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me,” which hits store shelves on June 26. That morning, Hunter will appear live on “Good Morning America” and “The View.”

Cuomo’s ABC colleague Bob Woodruff got the interview with Edwards that, in part, touched off the corruption case against him. In that interview in August, 2008 — six months after he dropped out of the race for the democratic nomination for president — Edwards admitted to Woodruff that he had an extended affair with Hunter, but denied he was the father of Quinn.

Bob Woodruff’s Big Interview Just Part of a Big Day: “My ‘Alive Day’”

BWoodruff.jpgWhat a day it is for ABC’s Bob Woodruff.

His long-awaited interview with former John Edwards aide Andrew Young is set to air tonight on a special 20/20, and on Nightline.

It’s also Woodruff’s father’s birthday. Plus, Woodruff has a date this evening with his twin nine year-old girls at a father-daughter dance.

And it was on this day four years ago that Woodruff narrowly escaped death. “My ‘alive day’,” he tells TVNewser.

In 2006, the newly-minted World News Tonight co-anchor was reporting from Iraq when a roadside bomb exploded near him and cameraman Doug Vogt. Both suffered serious head injuries. Four years later, Woodruff is feeling good — “I’m lucky,” he says — and he’s right in the thick of things at work.

He has nabbed some of the biggest gets in the Edwards-Rielle Hunter saga, including an exclusive interview with the former Senator and presidential candidate in August of 2008. During that chat, Edwards lied about the possibility of fathering Hunter’s daughter, Quinn.

Woodruff Edwards.jpg“I was pretty shocked” at the denial, Woodruff says. And so were Andrew Young — author of The Politician, out tomorrow — and his wife Cheri, who Woodruff says were “just irritated and furious” at what they heard. They chose Woodruff for their first interview.

Woodruff, who covered Edwards’ 2004 presidential run, finds it hard to believe he’s still covering this scandal, long after the now-infamous 2008 sit-down. “I didn’t think it would be such a big story a year and half later.”

But it is. So big that each network has scrambled for the scoop. Last week, with Woodruff’s Andrew Young interview looming, NBC got an exclusive of its own: a first look at the statement from Edwards admitting paternity.

Woodruff shrugs it off. “I love competition. Go for it, NBC!”

Getting Ahead of ABC Interview, NBC Gets Edwards Admission He’s the Father of Mistress’s Baby

Next Friday, ABC’s “20/20″ airs a Bob Woodruff interview with former aide to John Edwards, Andrew Young, who is releasing a tell-all called “The Politician.”

But this morning, NBC News stole some of that thunder by getting an exclusive statement from Edwards admitting that he’s the father of a 2-year-old daughter conceived with Rielle Hunter, a campaign videographer with whom he had an affair.

In a written statement provided first to NBC News, the former North Carolina senator and Democratic presidential candidate writes, “I am Quinn’s father.”

In her story on “Today,” NBC’s Lisa Myers got an on-camera interview with Edwards’ close friend Harrison Hickman: “I am speaking for the senator to the extent that anyone can,” says Hickman.

> More: Not to be outdone, ABC News is reporting this morning that Young was asked by Edwards to steal a diaper to secretly check his paternity.

> More, More: While NBC had the statement first, with enough time for Myers to produce a story, the Edwards camp was having it both ways, making sure all the networks had the statement for the lead on the morning newscasts.

News Organizations Asked Not To Name “Other Woman” During Elizabeth Edwards Interviews

EEdwards_5.12.jpg

What’s in a name?

A lot if you are Elizabeth Edwards, especially if that name is Rielle Hunter.

Edwards began making the rounds last week publicizing her new book. But in three TV interviews – with Oprah Winfrey, Matt Lauer and Larry King – Hunter, “the other woman” in the John Edwards affair, was not mentioned.

The AP’s David Bauder writes about how the networks handled this request from Mrs. Edwards.

On the “Today” show, Matt Lauer said Edwards had asked “out of consideration” that NBC not use Hunter’s name. “We’re a news
show,” he said while interviewing Edwards, “but, and out of consideration, I won’t use the name.” “Thank you,” Edwards replied. Jim Bell, executive producer of “Today,” said the Edwards interview had been booked without this request being made. If it was done as a demand, “Today” would not have done the interview.

In a “Larry King Live” interview on CNN Tuesday, Hunter’s name was not mentioned. King talked about the affair at some length, even asking Edwards whether she was curious about “the woman” and wanted to meet her. (“I don’t think that’s a very useful experience,” Edwards replied.) King said Edwards had requested Hunter not be named “out of consideration,” and CNN agreed.

Bauder writes that his own organization, The Associated Press, would not agree to the demand and was twice turned down for interviews with Edwards. “It’s simple,” said Michael Oreskes, vice president and senior managing editor of the AP. “We don’t let other people edit our wire.”

Friend Tells CBS John Edwards is the Father of Rielle Hunter’s Baby

EdwardsCBS_8.12.jpgThis morning on CBS’ The Early Show, Maggie Rodriguez spoke with Pigeon O’Brien, a friend of Rielle Hunter. O’Brien told Rodriguez that Edwards lied to ABC’s Bob Woodruff when he explained the timeline of the affair.

RODRIGUEZ: She told you it started in February or March of 2006.

O’BRIEN: Yes.

RODRIGUEZ: He says it started five months later when his campaign hired her.

O’BRIEN: Yeah, that’s not true. That’s not true. It started in the
winter of ’06. They became involved at that point, not later in the summer when she was hired to work for the political action committee.

RODRIGUEZ: It started in the winter of ’06?

O’BRIEN: Correct.

RODRIGUEZ: Because that’s when he was announcing his candidacy. And as we see in these picture she’s still working for him at the time, even though he says this is when the affair was winding down.

O’BRIEN: It started at the other end of ’06, in February, March of ’06.

O’Brien also thinks Edwards is the father of Hunter’s child. “I don’t see any other explanation,” O’Brien told Rodriguez. “She would not have a child with someone that she didn’t love, and she loves him.”

Edwards Affair: ABC’s Ross Followed The Money

ABC’s Brian Ross was a guest of Howard Kurtz‘ today on Reliable Sources. Ross talked about how the ABC News investigative unit was able to piece together the details that led to John Edwards admitting his affair with Rielle Hunter to ABC’s Bob Woodruff on Friday.

KURTZ: But would you have been uncomfortable at all backing into a story about an alleged affair, which you could not prove without Edwards admitting that he was in fact carrying on an affair, or at least did so in 2006, just to talk about the money? In other words, it’s kind of an indirect route into the story about the sexual affair.

ROSS: Well, we had set the standard at ABC we were not going to report the affair based on anonymous sources. We wanted to have somebody on the record, ideally either Edwards or the woman, and we thought we were getting close to that.

KURTZ: So if no one had gone on the record, even though you had this money trail, as you describe it, this odd situation where a former campaign aide to John Edwards’ presidential effort is somehow living in a $3 million Santa Barbara home, you would not have gone with that without some confirming source on the record?

ROSS: Well, I think we would have gone with the fact the questions raise about the money trail, and I think that would have led to this being cracked.

ABC News Breaks Edwards Story Into Mainstream

After weeks of barely reaching mainstream media, the John Edwards affair story broke wide open this afternoon on the cablers. ABC News’ Bob Woodruff got the interview, and his sit-down with Edwards airs tonight on Nightline. The National Enquirer story, the fact he fathered a child with Rielle Hunter, still remains up in the air, as Edwards denied that part. But shortly after the Olympics Opening Ceremony on NBC, tune in to ABC to see Edwards first admission to the affair. And check out MSNBC and CNN mention the ordeal for the first time this afternoon:
