‘CBS Sunday Morning’ Posts Highest Ratings in 17 Years

“CBS Sunday Morning” had its highest ratings since February 4, 1996 last week. The show posted a 4.2/11 with 6.19 million Total Viewers and a 1.7/08 in the A25-54 demographic.

Compared to the same week last year, “CBS Sunday Morning” was up +9% in Total Viewers, +5% in households and +13% in A25-54 viewers. Season to date, the show is up +6%, +8% and +7%, respectively.

Sunday’s show featured Rita Braver‘s report on meteorites, Lee Cowan‘s profile of “Let’s Make a Deal” host Wayne Brady, and Mo Rocca’s look at the bestselling autobiography of President Ulysses S. Grant.

Scott Pelley, Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams and More Turn Out to Remember Lane Venardos

Longtime CBS News executive Lane Venardos was fondly remembered Wednesday in a moving service at the Paley Center in New York City.

Venardos who died August 19 at his home in Maui, spent 30 years at CBS News producing live news, special events and documentaries. He would go on to produce the “Survivor” live finales for Mark Burnett on CBS.

More than 200 luminaries from across the television industry attended the memorial, including CBS News chairman Jeff Fager, News president David Rhodes; Charles Osgood, Scott Pelley, Bob Schieffer, Lesley Stahl, and Rita Braver; current “CBS Evening News” EP Pat Shevlin, CBS News VP Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews (who currently has the job Venardos once held) and “Sunday Morning” EP Rand Morrison.

Also Diane Sawyer, now with ABC News, who worked with Venardos during her time at CBS and from NBC: Brian Williams, News president Steve Capus and former CBSer, now EP of “Rock Center” Rome Hartman, were there, as was former CBS News president Andrew Heyward. ABC’s “This Week” EP Rick Kaplan, and former “GMA” boss Jim Murphy, both former CBS Newsers, attended.

Former CBS News and CBS, Inc. president Howard Stringer, who worked closely with Venardos during his years at CBS and who is now CEO of Sony, spoke via video. Other speakers included Pelley, Stahl, Williams and Venardos’s daughter Kelly who is a producer for “NBC Nightly News.” CBS News “48 Hours” EP Susan Zirinsky presented a video tribute (after the jump). The service concluded with a vocal solo performed by Venardos’s son, Kevin.

‘Sunday Morning’ Profiles Timeswoman

In the wake of her paper’s announcement of its latest round of buy-out offers, Jill Abramson will be profiled on “CBS Sunday Morning” tomorrow. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with the new New York Times’ Executive Editor about becoming the paper’s first female executive editor. “I’m very conscious of the past battles that woman journalists waged to rise up in their newsroom and that happened here at the Times, too,” Abramson tells Braver.

“It would be nice to think we would get to the point where it wasn’t so remarkable when a woman rose to the top job at an important institution. But we aren’t there yet.”

Correspondents’ Dinner: Who’s Funnier Betty White or Rahm Emanuel?

Katie Couric arrived with two multi-generational funny ladies for tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner: Chelsea Handler and Betty White. Handler, author of “Are you There Vodka, It’s Me Chelsea,” asked Evening News E.P. Rick Kaplan if he was taking drink orders — she found the bar all on her own. (We spotted FishbowlDC’s Betsy Rothstein chatting up Chelsea, so look for that interview later on FBDC).

Dave Price got his picture taken with White, thanks to D.C. colleague, White House Correspondent Chip Reid and his Blackberry.

Other CBS Newsers we spotted: Rita Braver, Anthony Mason, Bob Orr, and execs Sean McManus, David Friedman, and Friedman pere, Paul, talent exec Barbara Fedida nd DC Bureau Chief Chris Isham.

CBS News contributor Ayla Brown along with her dad Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA), and her mom and sister made the rounds at the CBS fete.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, Attorney General Eric Holder and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) rounded out the politico showing.

Gathering for the Funeral of Walter Cronkite

We’re keeping our eye on CBSNews.com and the funeral service for Walter Cronkite which will begin at 2pmET. Already at St. Bartholomew in Midtown Manhattan we’ve spotted Bill Plante, Bob Schieffer, Aaron Brown, Maggie Rodriguez and Harry Smith; Steve Kroft chatting with Linda Mason, who was the first female producer on the Evening News and is now an SVP at CBS News. One pew in front of Mason is Katie Couric who is seated between CBS News & Sports president Sean McManus and CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves.

ABC News president David Westin arrived around 1:20pm and is sitting with Diane Sawyer.

Also, Connie Chung, actors Jerry Stiller and his wife Anne Meara. Brian Williams arrived on the church steps at 1:25 followed by Barbara Walters and Charlie Gibson arriving arm-in-arm at 1:27pm and Tom Brokaw and wife Meredith at 1:35pm. A few minutes later Andy Rooney arrived with his son, ABC News correspondent Brian Rooney. NBC News president Steve Capus, Dan Rather, Don Hewitt, former 60 Minutes correspondent-turned-NBC anchor Meredith Vieira also spotted.
