ABC News Shifts Cannold To Business Role, Promotes Two In DC

ABC News is making some changes in its Washington DC bureau and at “This Week,” according to a memo to staff this morning sent by ABC News president Ben Sherwood.

ABC “This Week” EP Sandy Cannold has been named EP and senior business editor of ABC News. Cannold, who joined ABC from CNBC last September, will now be responsible for the network’s business and economics reports.

ABC is also promoting a pair of executives in the DC bureau. Robin Sproul, who is celebrating 20 years as ABC’s DC bureau chief, will add responsibility of “This Week” as its executive in charge. Sara Just will become the deputy bureau chief, reporting to Sproul.

It isn’t clear who the next executive producer of “This Week” will be, though the show now originates mostly from New York, so it would not be surprising if the producer is based there. Having Sproul serve as executive in charge can keep the DC influence intact.

Bill O’Reilly Loves ‘Lincoln’: ‘You Know You’re Gonna Win Best Picture’

Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly gives an enthusiastic two thumbs up for “Lincoln,” the new Steven Spielberg film which documents the final few months of the Civil War as Abraham Lincoln tries to get the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery through the House of Representatives.

TVNewser attended the screening and a Q&A with Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays Lincoln, and screenwriter Tony Kushner moderated by TIME’s Rick Stengel. Stengel called first on O’Reilly who asked Day-Lewis how long it took to prepare for the role. “It took a year,” Day-Lewis says. “It seemed preposterous at first … growing up in Southeast London” to play the 16th president of the United States.

O’Reilly then gave his seal of approval: “You know you’re going to win Best Picture.” Then, to Day-Lewis, “and you’re going to win Best Actor.” And to Spielberg: “And you’re going to win Best Director and [Tommy Lee] Jones is going to win Best Supporting Actor.” Jones plays “Radical Republican” Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens.

Before the screening we had a chance to talk with O’Reilly, author of “Killing Lincoln” on its 55th week on the New York Times Best-Sellers list, this week at No. 5. His “Killing Kennedy” is No. 1 on the list for the second straight week.

We asked the Fox News star if he was excited by the news that FNC chairman and CEO Roger Ailes had signed on for another four years. “Excited? We’d be shocked if he hadn’t,” said O’Reilly.

Other notable tvnewsers at the event, “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl, who had a revealing feature on Spielberg last Sunday, “CBS This Morning’s” Gayle King, Charlie Rose, and EP Chris Licht. MSNBC’s Chris Jansing and Lawrence O’Donnell, who ducked out during the Q&A to make it back to 30 Rock for his 10pm show. CNN execs Mark Whitaker, Ken Jautz and Bart Feder and ABC’s “This Week” EP Sandy Cannold.

And, after an early morning co-hosting “GMA,” Oprah Winfrey also attended. She gave a bear hug to Kushner. Then, exiting the theater — appropriately at the Loews Lincoln Square on the Upper

Sandy Cannold Joins ABC News as ‘This Week’ EP

As we told you last month, longtime CNBC executive producer Sandy Cannold is joining ABC News. Now we know what he’ll be doing.

Cannold has been named EP of “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” replacing Jon Banner who left the network over the summer. Cannold joined ABC News Monday after 13 years at CNBC, most recently as EP of “Power Lunch.”

In a memo to staffers this morning, ABC News president Ben Sherwood praised Cannold’s “natural storytelling gifts” and “passion for bold ideas.”

Cannold’s first show will be the first Sunday after the election, November 11. In the meantime, he’ll work on the weekend edition of “Good Morning America.”

Sandy Cannold, a longtime CNBC EP is leaving Englewood Cliffs, TVNewser has learned. Most recently, Cannold has been executive producer of “Power Lunch” and “Street Signs,” but has worked several dayparts during his 13 years with the network. Cannold also produced CNBC’s GOP primary debate last November.

We hear Cannold, who incidentally came in sixth in this year’s TVNewser Bracket Challenge, will join ABC News this fall in an EP position working on program development.

2012 TVNewser March Madness Bracket Challenge: The Winner Is…

With Kentucky’s 67-59 win over Kansas last night, March Madness has officially come to an end. That also means that it is time to declare a winner in TVNewser’s 2012 March Madness bracket challenge.

Fox Business Network stocks editor Liz MacDonald!

“It was great fun going up against really tough competition,” MacDonald says. “I am honored and thrilled to be this year’s champion.”

It was a close match this year, with CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux and Kyra Phillips very close behind MacDonald in the standings. This is the second straight year that a competitor for one of the business news networks won. Last year’s winner was Bloomberg TV’s Dominic Chu. Chu also had a good showing this year, placing ninth.

In last place, tragically, was your humble TVNewser editor, who clearly needs to reevaluate his college basketball picking skills. My strategy of picking teams who had cool mascots (Blue Devils? Awesome!) may not have been the most sound.

TVNewser Bracket Challenge 2011: It’s On

The time has come. The very first March Madness games are underway, and with them, comes the 2011 TVNewser bracket challenge.

Last year we had executive producers from across the TV news landscape make their picks, with “BBC World News America” EP Rome Hartman emerging victorious.

Hartman is back this year to defend his crown, but we opened the field up to all senior executives, executive producers and talent.

One thing we learned: “The Early Show” crew sticks together, and CNBCers love their college basketball.

EP Changes At CNBC

TVNewser has learned CNBC has made some Executive Producer shifts. Jerry Burke, who joined CNBC last summer, moves from EP of Power Lunch to overseeing primetime shows including Larry Kudlow‘s program and CNBC Reports. Sandy Cannold moves from primetime back to dayside and will now oversee Power Lunch and Street Signs.

Insiders tell us these changes were in the works before new SVP Jeremy Pink took over earlier this month.

CNBC Puts Economy First For Election Night

We stopped in to CNBC Global Headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, NJ this afternoon as crews prepare to cover tonight’s election returns.

We chatted with CNBC anchor Erin Burnett as she prepped for Street Signs. Correspondent Hampton Pearson is up from Washington, DC and John Harwood will be on hand tonight as well.

“In an election where the economy is a big story, if not the big story, we are a logical place turn turn, because that’s all we do,” says CNBC senior VP Jonathan Wald.

CNBC’s Election Night programming begins at 7pmET with anchors Mark Haines and Burnett. Dylan Ratigan and Maria Bartiromo pick up coverage at 8pm followed by Carl Quintanilla and Bartiromo at 9, with Michelle Caruso-Cabrera picking up at 10.

So, what about after the election? How will CNBC hold on to those viewers? Wald talks about that, after the jump. First, Sandy Cannold, EP of Squawk on the Street as well as the prime time election special, gives us a tour of the studio.
