ABC Newsers Toast Ben Sherwood

SherwoodWaltersSherwoodAnchors

As Ben Sherwood heads West, his East Coast colleagues sent him off in style last night at the Nomad Hotel in New York’s Flatiron District. Sherwood, named co-president of Disney/ABC TV in March, is moving his family to Los Angeles.

Insiders tell us heartfelt toasts were given by Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, David Muir and Lara Spencer. Sherwood got a big laugh when he promised Stephanopoulos a reality show, detective comedy or both.

And there were gifts: Sherwood was given a framed golden headset to remind him of his days in the control room — with the label “break in case of emergency,” while the whole family got ABC News Extreme Weather Team jackets — with “Sherwood” embroidered on the back.

Sherwood’s had three stints with ABC News, starting in 1989 as a producer at “Primetime Live.” After a run at “NBC Nightly News,” Sherwood returned to ABC in 2004 for a two-year stint as EP of “Good Morning America.” Sherwood turned to writing, penning three best-sellers, one of which was turned into a major motion picture. In 2010, he returned to ABC as News president.

‘Morning Joe’ and ‘Good Morning America’ Take the Ice Bucket Challenge

MJ and GMA

“Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski and several “Good Morning America” personalities got drenched this week for a good cause.

On Thursday, the “MJ” duo accepted Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal‘s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, getting doused with ice water while sitting in a giant kiddie pool (must say Joe got the worst of it). The next day, “GMA’s” Lara Spencer, Paula Faris, Sara Haines, and Tory Johnson accepted colleague Michael Strahan‘s challenge. Standing in NYC’s Central Park, the GMAers received quite the cooldown on a sunny summer day.

Paula Faris Joins ‘Good Morning America’

This morning, Paula Faris debuted as the new Weekend “Good Morning America” co-anchor. Faris takes over for Bianna Golodryga who is joining Yahoo! News. Dan Harris, Ron Claiborne and Sara Haines welcomed the former ABC News correspondent and “World News Now” co-anchor to the team.

At ‘GMA’ ‘the Estrogen is Flowing!’

Amy Robach took her seat at the news desk this morning as the show bid farewell to Josh Elliott.

“Josh, it has been great run with you, here on ‘GMA,’” said George Stephanopoulos to Elliott, who was not on the show today. “He’s our buddy and we love him very much,” added Lara Spencer, sitting in for Robin Roberts who’s in Los Angeles where she’ll be a judge on “Dancing with the Stars” tonight. Spencer inked her own new deal with ABC just last week.

Elliott is joining NBC Sports where he will contribute to the vast portfolio of sporting events to which NBC has the rights, including Sunday Night Football, the Olympics and Triple Crown horse racing.

“George, the estrogen is flowing!” Spencer added to the lone man on the set, Stephanopoulos, who was surrounded by Robach, meteorologist Ginger Zee and Sara Haines, all three of whom were hired by ABC from NBC in the last three years: Robach and Haines from the “Today” show, and Zee from NBC’s Chicago station WMAQ.

“I want to thank everyone here,” said Robach. “You have made me feel like family from the first day I walked in. The second phone call I got last night was from Josh, congratulating me. I congratulated him. We’ve all become such dear friends.”

Sara Haines Joins ABC News Next Month

As we reported last week, Sara Haines is leaving NBC News for ABC News. This morning, ABC News president Ben Sherwood sent a note to his staff, obtained by TVNewser, with more details. “Starting September 3, she’ll be a New York-based correspondent for all our programs and platforms,” Sherwood writes. “Her commitment to teamwork, joyful ability to connect with audiences and her boundless curiosity and energy will fit perfectly here at ABC News.”

Haines, a former NBC page, joined the “Today” show in 2002 as a production coordinator. Most recently, she’s been a correspondent for the fourth hour of the show.

Sara Haines Leaving NBC News for ABC News

Sara Haines, a contributing correspondent for NBC News who appears mostly on the fourth hour of the “Today” show, is leaving NBC to join ABC News where she will be a New York-based correspondent. Haines has been with “Today” since 2002, after a stint as an NBC page.

Page Six reports “Today” senior EP Don Nash along with Hoda Kotb, Kathie Lee Gifford and others threw Haines a “boozy brunch” Wednesday. ABC is expected to announce more details of the move on Monday.

Hoda & Kathie Lee’s No Makeup Zone: ‘So glad we did it…and so glad we are NOT doing it tomorrow!’

hoda_klg_5-13.jpgHoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford did something on the 4th hour of NBC “Today” show yesterday that most people are not used to seeing on-air talent do: hosted their show without any make-up.

“Just before the show I felt uneasy because I kept thinking of two words — HIGH DEF,” Kotb tells TVNewser. “Then after we got rolling, it became liberating. We felt free! (It was either the no-make-up or the cocktails, not sure which.)”

But the pair weren’t the only two going make-up-free. Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry, Natalie Morales, Bobbie Thomas, Sara Haines, and Maria Menunos joined them. After that, Kotb said, “We felt empowered.”

The idea was sparked by remarks Rosie O’Donnell had made recently about surgery she thought Kathie Lee had done. O’Donnell also appeared on the broadcast make-up-less, via skype.

“I feel relieved,” Kathie Lee told us after the broadcast. “Relieved that people received in the spirit in which we did it.”

Kotb says they’ve received a lot of great feedback, though Gifford may have her doubts: “The reaction has been all positive but, then again, I don’t know what anyone’s saying behind my back!”

“So glad we did it…and so glad we are NOT doing it tomorrow!” Kotb says.

Here’s the video:

In solidarity with Kathie Lee and Hoda, TVNewser editors Kevin Allocca and Alex Weprin have allowed themselves to be photographed at the mediabistro offices with no makeup today (Photo here.)

Kathie Lee, Hoda Sans Make-Up

Tomorrow morning, “Today” show fourth hour co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb will go without make-up. From the NBC release: “Gifford and Kotb want to lift the painted veil, and show viewers what they look like au naturel.” Correspondent Sara Haines will also skip the lipstick and mascara.

Contessa Brewer Hosts Karaoke Fundraiser for Red Cross

contessa_4-1.jpgMSNBC’s Contessa Brewer threw a karaoke fundraiser for the Red Cross of Greater New York last night and TVNewser stopped by. “It combines a couple things I love: helping NYC’s vulnerable communities with emergency preparedness and singing Shania Twain in public,” wrote Brewer in the invitation.

Attendees could pay to force others to sing while the target could perform or pay their way out of it, explained Brewer who sits on the Centennial Circle for the American Red Cross.

“My Red Cross group is particularly focused on helping the most vulnerable families prepare BEFORE an emergency happens – encouraging them to get a kit, make a plan and be informed,” Brewer told us. “And it’s worth singing the praises of the good work the Red Cross does – both in preparing for emergencies and handling them afterwards.”

And sing she did. TVNewser got there a little late — thanks to our own shindig — but we hear Brewer and the “Today” show’s Sara Haines delivered a duet of “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” that stopped half of lower Manhattan.
