That’s Willie Geist‘s assessment of a day of reporting on the aftermath of Monday’s EF5 tornado in Moore, OK. “I think what you can’t convey is the scope of the damage.” Which is why people like Geist go to places like this — to try and describe it for us all.

Late Tuesday, Geist caught a flight to Chicago, where TVNewser caught up with him and his third hour co-host Natalie Morales. With Matt Lauer and Al Roker remaining in Oklahoma, and Savannah Guthrie back in New York, the Chicago remote was a remnant of an interrupted, week-long cross-country trip which began Monday in Hawaii.

Today will close out the week with a live broadcast from the Jersey shore where residents there continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy.

Morales surveyed the Oklahoma devastation via helicopter Tuesday. “It was like a bowling ball, that was a mile-and-a-half wide, rolled through and completely devastated neighborhoods,” she says. “It sort of ties it all together, to talk about the Jersey Shore rebuilding.”

Along with special co-host, Gov. Chris Christie, Lauer, Guthrie, Roker, Morales, and Geist will all be on hand. Morales says the group is feeling “new energy” after a turbulent year in the morning show wars.

“We’re a much stronger team now for that. That’s where our true grit and our character have come through,” she says.

“I’m hoping that the past is the past. We just want to carry on and continue to do what we want to do best, which is, when a big story is breaking, like you saw in Oklahoma, we rally. We’re all there. We’re all about making sure people are getting the stories they want to hear and see.”

“The Michael J. Fox Show,” starring, well, Michael J. Fox, has the actor and comedian playing a local TV news anchor named Mike Henry who returns to work after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.

NBC just released the trailer for the show, which features plenty of jokes at NBC’s expense, and a special appearance by the “Today” anchor team of Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, who interview “Mike Henry” on the morning program. TVNewser hears that “most, if not all” of the major NBC News anchors will appear on the program at least once, playing themselves.

Obama kicked off his remarks by acknowledging Fox News senior White House correspondent Ed Henry, the White House Correspondents’ Association president. “Ed, you’re doing an outstanding job,” Obama said. “We are grateful for the great work you’ve done.”

In his remarks, Obama poked fun at CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. “I know CNN has taken some knocks lately, but I admire their commitment to cover all sides of the story, just in case one of them happens to be accurate,” he said. “David Axelrod now works for MSNBC, which is a nice change of pace considering MSNBC used to work for David Axelrod.” Obama joked that Fox News said it was “an insult to Satan” when an actor in the History Channel’s series “The Bible” was noticed for his resemblance to the President.

O’Brien also took aim at CNN and Fox News in his speech. “Speaking of dinner, tonight’s entrees were halibut and filet mignon. Or as John King reported it, lasagna and cous-cous,” he said. “If the President laughs, everyone laughs. And if the Fox News table laughs, a little girl just fell off her bike.”

O’Brien also made fun of NBC, saying the network has had a “rough go of it” of late. “The ‘Today’ show let go of Ann Curry. After being told, Ann Curry said, ‘let me get this straight: Al Roker tells the world that he crapped his pants at the White House, and I’m getting fired?’” O’Brien said.

The once (and only once) North Dakota anchor is in New York explaining why he uttered the words “fucking shit” at the start of the 5pm news on Bismark NBC affiliate KFYR Sunday. In his first stop on “Today” he told Lauer and Savannah Guthrie a number of factors, “a storm,” he called it, led him to utter the words. The show went on :30 early, he didn’t have IFB, there was a name in his second script he was having trouble pronouncing and, on top of it all, as this was his very first newscast, so he was nervous. He says he didn’t even realize he was caught on tape until the third commercial break when his news director told him. “I fully expected, you know, that they would fire me,” says Clemente who says he doesn’t hold a grudge.

Later, Clemente went on “Morning Joe,” where South Dakota native and news legend Tom Brokaw told Clemente it can happen to the best of them. “I made a huge gaffe when I was in Omaha at a very early age,” said Brokaw. “It wasn’t quite as, as explicit as yours was, by any means. On the other hand, it was confined to Omaha, because there was no social media.”

At one point, the executive producer, Jim Bell, commissioned a blooper reel of Curry’s worst on-air mistakes. Another time, according to a producer, Bell called staff members into his office to show a gaffe she made during a cross-talk with a local station. (Bell denies both incidents.) Then several boxes of Curry’s belongings ended up in a coat closet, as if she had already been booted off the premises. One staff person recalled that “a lot of time in the control room was spent making fun of Ann’s outfit choices or just generally messing with her.” On one memorable spring morning, Curry wore a bright yellow dress that spawned snarky comparisons to Big Bird. The staff person said that others in the control room, which included 14 men and 3 women, according to my head count one morning, Photoshopped a picture of Big Bird next to Curry and asked co-workers to vote on “Who wore it best?” continued…

• Longtime ABC executive Preston Davis died Monday. Davis, 63, was the retired president of Broadcast Operations & Engineering. Davis joined ABC in 1976, beginning as an engineer in Washington, DC. He was the first African-American president of any division at ABC.

• In an interview with NBC’s Ann Curry airing on Friday’s “Rock Center”, Jackie and Warren Hance sit down for the first time to talk about the death of their three daughters in a horrific car accident when the girls’ aunt drove the wrong way on a New York State Parkway.

• In her interview with Pres. Obama Monday, Savannah Guthrie asked about Jay-Z and Beyoncé‘s trip to Cuba: “I wasn’t familiar that they were taking the trip. This is not something the White House was involved with. We’ve got better things to do.”

Faced with few overnight developments in the investigation of the bombings, the morning shows focused on the human impact of the explosions, interviewing eyewitnesses and victims that were at the marathon finish line.

Savannah Guthrie will interview President Obama this week on “Today.”

David Gregory announced the news at the close of today’s “Meet the Press,” saying the “wide-ranging, exclusive” interview will take place at the White House. The interview will air Tuesday and Wednesday on “Today.”

The interview is Guthrie’s second sit-down with the President. She previously interviewed him in September during NBC’s “Education Nation” summit.

For the week of April 1, “GMA” wins in both total viewers and younger viewer and is up +8 in viewers and up +7 in the demo. The biggest gainer of the week is “CBS This Morning” which is up +13% in viewers and flat in the demo. “Today” is down -9% / -11%, respectively, vs. last year.

#3 “CBS This Morning” showed the most year-over-year growth in the quarter: +13% in total viewers and +4% in the demo. This is the closest CBS has gotten to NBC in a first quarter in total viewers since 1995, and in A25-54 viewers since 1994.

“GMA” was also up: +9 / +1%, respectively for the quarter. “Today,” which lost its 16-year reign as the morning leader at the start of Q2 2012, was down double digits: -12% in total viewers / -17% in the demo.

For the week, “GMA” was the only show to grow in both measurements: +6% / +11%. “CBS This Morning,” was up in total viewers compared to the same week last year: +12%, but was down -2% in the demo. “Today” was down -9% / -16%, respectively, but got within 4,000 younger viewers of “GMA.”
