Kelly to Pelley: ‘We Beat You in all the Debates and on Election Night, Scott’

CBS News anchor Scott Pelley‘s comments to Deadline over the weekend comparing cable and network news has been fodder on Fox News today. First, here’s part of the Q&A:

DEADLINE: While the news flow on cable may be in the hundreds of thousands, a lot of people are watching Bill O’Reilly, a couple of million a night. Same thing with Hannity.

PELLEY: We measure our audience in millions. They’re not big numbers. People talk about cable a lot and cable has a very high profile. Not a lot of people watch cable news, they just don’t. If you look at the Nielsen numbers, the cable channels have a few hundred thousand viewers at any given moment. The CBS Evening News again has 7 million viewers, ABC has 8 million viewers. Brian [NBC's Williams] has almost 9 million. Altogether we have about 25 million viewers on any given night. That’s a very different order of magnitude.

The story was discussed on “Fox & Friends” this morning and again on Megyn Kelly‘s show. Kelly, in a discussion with Michelle Malkin, says Pelley answering that question by dismissing a fact in it, does a disservice to his audience. She also took a jab at Pelley: “We beat you in all the debates and on election night, Scott.”

You can bet former CBS News correspondent Bernard Goldberg will have a few things to say about it tonight on his regular Monday night “O’Reilly Factor” appearance.

Pelley Pounds Page Six Provocateur

The New York Post‘s Page Six reported that the “CBS Evening News” allegedly didn’t cover John Miller‘s big State Department scoop because anchor Scott Pelley was upset it happened on “CBS This Morning.”

The story itself isn’t nearly as interesting as Pelley’s vehement response to Page Six:

“That allegation is false. How long have you been a journalist? You wouldn’t last ten seconds at CBS News. This is not how reporters do their job. You called my publicist but not me in my office?”

Pelley explained, “We wrote that story for ‘CBS This Morning’ on Friday. ‘CTM’ has two hours of air time, I have 30 minutes. Monday was a heavy news day and we had no place to put the story.”

We already know that Pelley can hold his own at the gun show, which only makes the phone call that much more intense. For what it’s worth, CBS dedicated more than three minutes on last night’s newscast to Miller’s scoop.

Evening News Ratings: Week of June 3

And for the first time since September, “World News” won two nights of the week — Monday and Friday.

“Nightly News with Brian Williams” still won the week by more than a half million viewers. The NBC broadcast was flat vs. last year in total viewers and down -6% in the demo. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was up the most of the three shows: +9% in total viewers and flat in the younger demo.

Due to the NBA Finals Game 1 on Thursday “World News” was removed from the average and based on four days, while “Nightly News” and “Evening News” are based on five days.

Scott Pelley: NBC Nightly News ‘Has Only One Problem,’ CBS Evening News ‘is Better’

“When it comes to covering the news, and not wasting the audience’s time,” says Scott Pelley about the nightly network newscasts, “I think there’s one place you can come to…the CBS Evening News. Brian Williams does a terrific news broadcast [on NBC]. It has only one problem, and that is that ours is better.”

Pelley spoke with TVNewser on his second anniversary at the helm of the CBS Evening News, which he began anchoring June 6, 2011. It was the first newscast he’d ever anchored after 38 years in the business.

Although the program remains in last place among the ‘big three’, there has been steady ratings growth during the past two years. For last month’s May sweeps, the broadcast saw +8% total viewership growth versus May of 2012, the strongest trend for any of the nightly news shows.

“Imagine how counter-intuitive that is,” Pelley reflects. “Who would have predicted that the ‘CBS Evening News’ would add a million viewers over the last few years – we’ve been losing viewers for decades. [But with] so much bad information floating around everywhere, particularly in social media, I think that people are looking for a thirty-minute encapsulation of the most important things that happened in the world, with a brand that they know that they can trust.”

The CBS News brand is important to Pelley, who next year will mark his 25th anniversary with the Tiffany Network.

But only “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” grew both total viewers and younger viewers compared to the same week last year. Sawyer’s broadcast was up +2% in viewers and up +3% in the A25-54 demo.

“CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” showed the most growth among total viewers (+4%) but shed the most younger viewers (-9%). “Nightly News” was down too: -2% / -9%, respectively. Due to the Memorial Day holiday, all the broadcast averages are based on four days, Tuesday-Friday.

Last week, the networks spent considerable time covering a deadly tornado and its aftermath in Moore, OK. It was two years ago that week the evening newscasts found themselves in Joplin, MO covering a tornado there.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was #1 again followed by “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” and the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.” Once again it is the CBS broadcast that is seeing the most growth: +10% in viewers and +8% in the A25-54 demo. ABC was up +3% in viewers and +7% in the demo. NBC was up +4% / +2%, respectively.

Numbers for the week of May 20, 2013:

Evening News Ratings: Week of May 13

The “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was the only evening newscast to grow compared to the same week last year. The 3rd ranked show was up +5% in total viewers cutting the gap with #2 “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” nearly in half. Last year the viewership gap between the two shows was 1.65 million. Last week it was 881,000.

Sawyer’s newscast was down -7% in viewers and down -9% in the demo. No. 1 “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was flat in viewership and down -6% in the demo. Pelley’s broadcast, too, was down in the demo, losing 2% of its audience compared to last year.

President Obama is scheduled to comment on the disaster in Oklahoma at 10 AM and it is likely that all of the broadcast networks will break into regular programming to cover it. ”CBS This Morning” went into the 9 AM hour to cover the fallout. We hear that “CTM” will stay live until 12 PM on the east coast covering the damage, and 10 AM pacific.

Update: “Our prayers are with the people of Oklahoma today,” Obama said. “Oklahoma needs to get everything that it needs right away.”

“If there is hope to hold onto, not just in Oklahoma but around the country, it is the knowledge that the good people there in Oklahoma are more prepared than most, and what they can be certain about is that Americans around the country will be right there with them,” he added.

Meanwhile, the news channels are sending their A-teams to Oklahoma to cover the fallout from the tornado.

As we noted yesterday, NBC has Brian Williams, Lester Holt, Ann Curry, Harry Smith, Kate Snow, Anne Thompson and Dr. Nancy Snyderman in Oklahoma, as well as the Weather Channel team of Jim Cantore, Mike Bettes, and Mike Seidel.

ABC News has Sam Champion, Ginger Zee, David Muir and Alex Perez in Oklahoma. Byron Pitts, Mike Boettcher, and Cecilia Vega are also either in Moore or en route.

CBS has Norah O’Donnell anchoring from Moore, and Anna Werner on the ground, and Scott Pelley will anchor the “CBS Evening News” there this evening.

Robin Roberts Gets Standing Ovation at Peabody Awards

“Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts received a standing ovation as she accepted her George Foster Peabody Award Monday. Roberts is the first journalist since Walter Cronkite to get a standing ovation at the awards lunch, held annually at the Waldorf Astoria.

Roberts, pictured here with ABC News president Ben Sherwood, was honored for reports on her bone marrow transplant, which successfully raised awareness for Be the Match, an organization that registers potential bone marrow donors.

“As journalists we want to cover stories that cause a reaction that leads to action,” Roberts said in her speech. “We had no idea chronicling my journey would cause such a catalyst for action … many becoming bone marrow donors.”

Scott Pelley emceed the event. CBS News, PBS and CNN were among this year’s other winners.

CBS CEO Les Moonves: ‘Great Drama Belongs In Primetime… Not At 7 In The Morning’

CBS is delivering its upfront presentation to advertisers, media buyers and the press this afternoon, and CEO Les Moonves took aim squarely at NBC and “Today” in his opening statement.

“We believe that great drama belongs in primetime between 8-11 PM, not at 7 in the morning,” Moonves quipped, as a photo of Ann Curry and Matt Lauer from Curry’s departure from “Today” appeared on stage behind him (see the photo to the left).

Of course, “CBS This Morning” also had a talent change in the last year, as Erica Hill left (eventually joining NBC) and Norah O’Donnell came on board. That said, the transition was free of drama in front of the cameras.

CBS News was given prime placement at the upfront, with Moonves introducing the division. The CBS CEO said that “under the leadership of Jeff Fager and David Rhodes there is a renaissance going on,” before introducing a clip reel with news from the last year. Scott Pelley and O’Donnell then appeared on stage to talk about CBS News.

At the same time, it’s the only evening broadcast to shed viewers in the ad-friendly A25-54 demo, down -2% compared to last year. “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” extends its winning streak among total viewers to 191 weeks and among younger viewers to 233 weeks. “Nightly” is up year-over-year in both total viewers (+3%) and younger viewers (+4%). “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” is up in total viewers (+1%) and flat in the demo.

Scott Pelley: ‘We’re Getting the Big Stories Wrong, Over and Over Again’

Accepting his Fred Friendly First Amendment award this afternoon at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Club, CBS News anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley delivered an impassioned speech about the sorry state of journalism in 2013.

“Our house is on fire,” Pelley said of the business at large. “Never before in human history has more information been available to more people. But at the same time never before in human history has more bad information been available to more people.”

Pelley took “the first arrow,” recalling his own mistake over some of the early reporting out of Sandy Hook Elementary in December. Then he recounted early errors after the Boston Marathon was bombed. “We were attacked by terrorists on that day, and amateur journalists became digital vigilantes.”

Pelley joins 19 other TV journalists including Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, Ted Koppel, and, last year, Martha Raddatz, as Fred Friendly honorees. He told the crowd, which included his CBS News colleagues past and present, that “disruptive technologies” are partly to blame.

“Twitter, Facebook and Reddit: that’s not journalism. That’s gossip. Journalism was invented as an antidote to gossip.”

Pelley also took on the chest thumping that goes on in local and national newsrooms around the nation every day.

continued…
