What Did You Think of Last Night’s Coverage of the Wisconsin Recall?

Politico’s Dylan Byers thinks <a href="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2012/06/the-worst-night-on-cable-news-125389.html"target="_blank">last night’s coverage of the Wisconsin recall was, “The worst night on cable news.” That’s his headline anyway.

Really? The worst? Ever?

Seems to me it was exactly the way it was supposed to go. MSNBC’s Ed Schultz rooting for democratic challenger Tom Barrett and Fox News’ Sean Hannity rooting for republican Gov. Scott Walker. With CNN in the middle prepared to break in to Piers Morgan‘s retelling of the Queen’s Jubilee with their call (8 minutes after NBC, 2 minutes after FOX), reporting and analysis.

This is the state of cable news at the moment. No critic or viewer should be surprised at this point by what the cable news channels did last night. But does that make it “the worst?” What do you think?

Ed Schultz Has a Physical Every 90 Days

Ed Schultz has a stressful job, no doubt. He talks on the radio for three hours a day, then talks on TV for an hour every night: fighting the establishment, fighting the powerbrokers, fighting, whatever’s worth fighting.

So how does he not let the stress of all that fighting affect his health?

“I have a physical every 90 days,” Schultz tells Men’s Health. “I have to because of my job. I go to the doctor four times a year.”

“A lot of broadcasters die in their 60s. I can’t even get disability insurance because of my occupation. So my goal is to live into my 70s. I’m 58. Managing stress, managing emotion in a high-pressure environment, is the key.”

Schultz managed the stress last night of the defeat of Tom Barrett, the democratic challenger to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Schultz has been covering Wisconsin’s long, state nightmare for the last 16 months, when democratic state lawmakers fled the state rather than vote on Gov. Walker’s public employee collective bargaining proposal — a move which touched off the recall effort culminating in Walker’s win last night.

“This is not a good night for wage earners or the democratic party,” said Schultz after Walker had been declared winner. “It’s a tough one to take but it’s about being in the fight. It’s about believing what you believe in and sticking to your guns and not giving up.”

Schultz will be back in Wisconsin this weekend for the state’s democratic convention. Here’s Ed Schultz talking about how he got into broadcasting in the first place:

Scott Walker Wins Wisconsin Recall Vote

Scott Walker will keep his job as the governor of Wisconsin after winning a contentious recall election that has been the focus of national news coverage for weeks. NBC News was first to call the race for Walker, with Rachel Maddow reporting the projection on MSNBC at 9:50pmET.

“Scott Walker, according to NBC News, is holding on tonight in Wisconsin after this epic, epic recall fight,” said Maddow before bringing in Ed Schultz, who was at a gathering of supporters of the democratic challenger Tom Barrett. “NBC is calling it for Walker. Okay. I think it’s awful close,” said Schultz, seeming to question the results with just 21% of the vote in at that point. “There’s a lot of absentee ballots that are still out and it’s going to be very, very close down to the wire.”

On Fox News, Sean Hannity tossed to Bret Baier, also reporting from Wisconsin, who made the call at 9:56pmET. Wolf Blitzer made the projection on CNN at 9:58pm.

This is the first time ever a sitting governor has kept his job after facing voters in a recall election.

MSNBC Clarifies Ed Schultz’s Role at Wisconsin Democratic Convention

Tomorrow, Wisconsin voters will go to the polls — again — to decide if Republican Gov. Scott Walker should keep his job. Later in the week, Wisconsin Democratic leaders will gather to hold their annual convention.

Last week, the AP reported MSNBC host Ed Schultz would be one of the speakers. But this morning, MSNBC reached out to us to clarify Schultz’s participation in the event which begins Friday and continues Saturday.

An MSNBC spokesperson tells TVNewser, “Ed does not have a speaking role at the Wisconsin Democratic convention. The convention is open to press and Ed plans to attend.”

Coverage of Wisconsin Protests turns to Gov. Scott Walker Prank Call from Blogger

As the protests in Madison, WI continue the news today is about a phone conversation between Gov. Scott Walker and a liberal blogger. Walker, a republican elected last November, thought he was talking to a top GOP donor named David Koch. The audio was posted on the Buffalo Beast, a left-leaning website that has been inaccessible for much of the afternoon, because of the attention to this story.

On the 20-minute call, Walker discussed his strategy to take on public employee unions and joked that he would use a baseball bat in his office to go after political opponents.

MSNBC began covering the story in the NoonET hour; Megyn Kelly began covering it during “America Live” at 1pmET, and by 3:30pm CNN had its cameras trained on Madison where Walker was going to speak live about the impact all of this has had on state government operations.

As for the prank, it was the first question he got during the news conference. “I’m not going to allow one prank phone call to be a distraction from the realities that we have a job to do here,” he said.

> Update: “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” has prank caller Ian Murphy on the show tonight. 8pmET on MSNBC.
