The SportsNewser Interview: Gary Stevenson

Just days after he was formally announced as president of Pac-12 Enterprises, SportsNewser had a chance to chat exclusively with Gary Stevenson.

The sports marketing and media executive comes to the Pac-12 from OnSports, a consulting firm Stevenson founded in 1997. In fact, the then-Pac-10 was one of Stevenson’s clients along with the likes of the PGA Tour and NASCAR.

Stevenson discussed the importance of striking a deal with the satellite companies for the national and regional networks along with what content Pac-12 fans can expect across their digital properties.

SportsNewser: The then-Pac-10 was one of your OnSport clients. How much did your prior relationship with the conference come into play when Larry Scott called you about the position?

Gary Stevenson: From my prior relationship with the conference, I got a real understanding of what the conference brand and the schools brand stood for. That was intriguing to me. Anytime you’re going to launch a network, it’s important what the brand is that’s affiliated with the network. We have such a huge start because the brand is on such an excellent level. Read more

Former Coaches Go Back to Their High Schools in New ESPN Series

Starting Sunday SportsCenter will follow four former coaches and current ESPN talking heads as they visit their old high schools. “Back to School” will feature Mike Ditka returning to Aliquippa, Pa.; Herm Edwards going back to Monterey, Calif.; Lou Holtz visiting East Liverpool, Ohio; and Lee Corso heading back to Miami, Florida. Unfortunately it will not feature any clips from the Rodney Dangerfield movie.

In addition to making surprise visit to their old schools, the four coaches visited some of their favorite hometown spots and shared time with family and friends.

“What these ‘Back to School’ features do is allow viewers to see where these guys got their start – both on the field and off – and provide our former coaches a chance to go back and interact with the community they grew up in,” said Glenn Jacobs, ESPN senior coordinating producer.

The schedule goes like this: Holtz on SportsCenter Sunday at 10 a.m.; Corso, Monday at 9 a.m.; Edwards, Tuesday at 9 a.m.; and Ditka, Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Artest Officially 'Metta World Peace' as of Today

Take note, media members: From this day forward, the basketball player formerly known as Ron Artest should henceforth be called “Metta World Peace” in all news stories. Yes, Artest’s name change becomes official today. “Metta” is a Buddhist term for “kindness,” while “world peace” is what Rita and Phil toast to in “Groundhog Day.”

Artest is also reportedly changing his uniform number from 15 to 70.

“I’m changing it to 70 because it’s like something to do with the universe,” Artest said. “Everything kind of repeats itself. The universe is one. It’s the same thing. Healthy minds, just keeping the kids positive.”

Video: Anderson Silva Lip-Syncs Burger King Ad

UFC middleweight champion Anderson “Spider” Silva is a bad man. It’s yet to be determined if he’s a bad singer, as the Brazilian native lip syncs “Lovin’ You,” the familiar standard by Minne Riperton, in this Burger King commercial.

This Saturday Silva defends his crown against Yushin Okami in UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jeter Splits from Minka Kelly

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Charlie’s Angels actress Minka Kelly have reportedly split up after three years, news that wouldn’t be relevant here if one half of this equation weren’t a future Hall of Fame shortstop with a track record of dating some of contemporary society’s most attractive actresses and singers. Jeter has been linked to Scarlett Johansson, Jordana Brewster, Mariah Carey, among others.

Recent speculation said Jeter and Kelly were headed for marriage, but that seems less likely now. Rest assured Jeter and Kelly’s faces will be on the covers of People, Us Weekly and numerous other tabloids this week (“What happened!?!?”), not to mention the back page of tomorrow’s New York tabloid newspapers. Obviously we’re most eager to hear what Michael Kay has to say about the matter.

ESPN Releases College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon Schedule

One of the days that I’ve circled on my calendar the last three years is ESPN’s College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.

The network has delivered another fantastic lineup starting Tuesday, Nov. 15 at midnight ET.

The ESPN family of networks will broadcast 19 games including two women’s games for the first time. ESPN3.com will carry two exclusive games along with a simulcast of every ESPN and ESPN2 telecast. Read more

Video: Youkilis Pairs Up With Biz Markie

The walk-up song for Kevin Youkilis has long been “Just a Friend” by Biz Markie, a little play on words as “Youuuuuu got what I need” easily becomes “Youkkkk….got what I need.” It was probably just a matter of time until someone got the two together for a little duet, which is what Boston area car dealer Herb Chambers did in a new ad for his dealership.

ESPN's Revamped Social Networking Policy

ESPN personalities (that means everyone except Chris Berman) will have to think twice before sending out that next tweet.

The network rolled out their revamped policy when it comes to social media. Some highlights:

• Think before your tweet. Understand that at all times you are representing ESPN, and Twitter (as with other social sites) offers the equivalent of a live microphone. Simple rule: If you wouldn’t say it on the air or write it in a column, don’t post it on any social network. Read more

What Did You Think About The Michael Vick Photo/Article?

The hot story Thursday (besides Hurricane Irene … good luck with that) has been the ESPN The Magazine story/photo of Michael Vick.

The photo (seen above) was pulled from ESPN.com shortly after it hit the website.

Personally, I’m wasn’t offended by the photo or the story, but give it a read and share your thoughts.
