A Brief Timeline Of American TV Correspondent Kidnappings, Injuries and Deaths

NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel is safe, after being kidnapped in Syria late last week and released overnight. Unfortunately, kidnappings, injuries and death are part of the job of the foreign correspondent and their crew. With stories out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Egypt and Libya in the last few years, just about every news outlet has had at least a handful of staffers affected by violence or misfortune.

In April, 2003, NBC News correspondent David Bloom died in Iraq due to a blood clot.

In June, 2003, NBC News Soundman Jeremy Little was mortally wounded in a grenade attack in Iraq. He was treated in Landstuhl, Germany but succumbed a few days later to a post-operative infection.

In January, 2006, ABC anchor Bob Woodruff and camera operator Doug Vogt were badly injured in Iraq when a roadside bomb exploded next to the vehicle they were traveling in.

In May, 2006 CBS camera operator Paul Douglas and sound technician James Brolan were killed in Iraq when the U.S. Army unit they were embedded with came under attack. CBS correspondent Kimberly Dozier was seriously wounded in the attack and survived.

In August, 2006 Fox News Channel correspondent Steve Centanni and camera operator Olaf Wiig were kidnapped while reporting in Gaza. Centanni’s family would make a televised plea for their safe return, and they were eventually freed. Wiig would see another incident in Egypt in 2011 (see below).

In May, 2007 ABC News camera operator Alaa Uldeen Aziz and sound technician Saif Laith Yousuf were killed in Iraq when the car they were traveling in was ambushed.

In August, 2008 Fox News camera operator Chris Jackson was injured in Afghanistan while traveling with Oliver North.

In August, 2009 CBS News correspondent Cami McCormick was injured in Afghanistan when the vehicle she was traveling in was hit by an IED.

Fox News Blows Up Primetime Tonight To Focus On Hurricane Sandy

Fox News Channel is blowing up its primetime programming to provide coverage of Hurricane Sandy’s landfall. “Hannity” will air as normal at 9 PM, but every other program is affected by the changes. There will be live coverage going through tomorrow morning, where “Fox & Friends” will pick things up.

Tonight’s lineup:

“Fox Report” 7-9pm
“Hannity” 9pm
“On the Record” 10-midnight
“America’s News Headquarters special coverage of Monster Storm,” co-anchored by Gregg Jarrett and Heather Childers midnight to 4am
“Fox and Friends First” will begin again at 4am tomorrow
“Fox and Friends” 6-9am

Morning Anchors Head to West Virginia to Cover Mine Explosion

TV news anchors and correspondents descended on towns like Naoma and Marsh Fork, West Virginia overnight to cover the coal mine explosion in nearby Montcoal. Shortly after midnight the death toll jumped to 25, making this the worst mining disaster in the U.S. since 1984. For ABC, JuJu Chang. For CBS, Harry Smith; for NBC, correspondent Ron Mott; for CNN, anchor John Roberts; for FNC, correspondent Steve Centanni; and for MSNBC Norah O’Donnell.

Scare for Obama Family Friend During Hawaii Vacation

AP Newsalerts from Kailua, Hawaii. The first at 5:01pmET:

• Obama leaves golf abruptly for ‘personal matter’; ambulance speeds to first family’s compound.

• White House: First family ok; family friend injured at first family’s compound. No details about the cause of injuries.

CNN reported the alert with Ed Henry in Honolulu at 5:08pmET. Chuck Todd had a brief live report at 5:18pm during “Hardball” and Steve Centanni was live for Fox News at 5:42pm during a live shot that had its own complications when a light stand was blown over, nearly hitting Centanni. But his cameraman caught the stand, and Centanni continued with the live report.

The NYT’s The Caucus blog reports the son of an Obama family friend required stitches after being hit by a surfboard.

Christmas Day Terror Scare on board Detroit-Bound Flight

CNN and Fox News are continuing with live coverage of an attempted terror attack on a Northwest flight from Amsterdam as it was about to land in Detroit. Here’s the AP brief on the story:

As this is Christmas, the cable news networks were all in taped programming when the news first broke. CNN’s T.J. Holmes reported the story at 2:19pmET when the initial incident was attributed to a passenger setting off firecrackers. FNC reported the details at 2:22pm and MSNBC reported the news at 3:31pm in a scheduled news update during documentary programming. As the details continued to come in, and the White House declared it an attempted act of terrorism, FNC and CNN increased their live coverage with Jamie Colby anchoring on Fox News and Ali Velshi anchoring for CNN. MSNBC continues to air updates on the half hour during documentaries anchored by Christina Brown.

White House correspondents Ed Henry for CNN and Steve Centanni for Fox News reported from Hawaii where the president was first made aware of the incident around 9am Hawaii time.
