L.A. Cop Murder Suspect Cites A Slew Of TV News Hosts In Manifesto

CNN says that it received a package from Christopher Jordan Dorner, a former Los Angeles police officer turned murder suspect. The package was addressed to Anderson Cooper. “Inside was a note, DVD, and a coin shot thru with bullet holes,” Cooper tweeted. ”AC360″ will address it tonight.

Dorner also wrote a rambling manifesto attempting to justify his crimes, and cites a number of TV news personalities and other entertainers in it.

Dorner is accused of killing one police officer and shooting three others. He is also believed to be behind the murder of the daughter of another police officer.

Dorner’s manifesto starts somewhat cohesive but rambles off when he starts sending notes to politicians, TV news personalities and entertainers. He praises New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former President George H.W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, Charlie Sheen, Larry David and Ellen Degeneres, among others.

Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough, (KCBS anchor) Pat Harvey, Brian Williams, Soledad Obrien (sic), Wolf Blitzer, Meredith Viera (sic), Tavis Smiley, and Anderson Cooper, keep up the great work and follow Cronkite’s lead. I hold many of you in the same regard as Tom Brokaw and the late Peter Jennings. Cooper, stop nagging and berating your guest, they’re your (guest). Mr. Scarborough, we met at McGuire’s pub in P-cola in 2002 when I was stationed there. It was an honor conversing with you about politics, family, and life.

Willie Geist, you’re a talented and charismatic journalist. Stop with all the talk show shenanigans and get back to your core of reporting. Your future is brighter than most

Bill O’Reilly. Tavis Smiley. Cornell West. Go

Bill O’Reilly took his show to historic Faneuil Hall in Boston last night as Fox News continues their 15th anniversary celebration. The segment getting the most traction, is O’Reilly’s 2-part interview with Cornell West and Tavis Smiley.

It started it off nicely enough. West to O’Reilly: “My dear brother Bill.” Then it started getting tense: O’Reilly to West: “I am not a liar!” Then it went off the rails about law-abiding or law-breaking bankers:

O’Reilly: “Because they didn’t violate any laws, Tavis….”
Smiley & West: “Ohhhhh. Brother Bill, how do you know?”
O’Reilly: “All right, hold it. Knock it off… HOLD IT.”

Watch the the segment here.

After the jump, O’Reilly looks back on his 15 years at Fox News Channel…

Smiley: ‘[Obama] the first President in my professional career that hasn’t invited me to the White House’

PBS host Tavis Smiley appeared on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” this morning, where he revealed a surprising fact about President Obama. Despite calling him a friend for many years, and having interviewed many times on the campaign trail, Smiley said the president gave him and his programs the cold shoulder once getting elected:

“He has not at this point come on my TV or radio programs one time since he’s been in this White House,” Smiley said. ” This is the first president in my professional career that hasn’t invited me to the White House.”

Katie Couric: ‘I’m excited about doing something that’s a little more in my wheelhouse.’

Before she got on a plane for London, Katie Couric took care of a little business. She gave a statement to People magazine about her decision to leave the CBS Evening News and then talked about it with Tavis Smiley.

“While it was such a privledge to sit in that chair that once was occupied by Walter Cronkite … you know … it’s a pretty confining venue.”

Here’s the clip from the show. The interview can be seen in its entirety on PBS tonight.

Larry King Gets New Show… In The Rafters of Conan O’Brien’s Show

Former CNN host Larry King has been keeping busy since stepping don from his nightly program. In addition to hosting plenty of live events, and coaching his son’s little league team, King has even found time to roast Donald Trump, interview Tavis Smiley, and perhaps even join “The Daily Show.”

Last night, we learned that King has a new show in the works, and it takes place in the rafters of Conan O’Brien‘s program on CNN sister network TBS.

“All my life and all my career, I have dreamed of doing a show from these creepy rafters.”

Larry King Returning to the TV Interviewer Chair… on PBS

First on TVNewser: Former CNN 9 PM host Larry King will be returning to the interviewer’s chair this Thursday and Friday, as he switches roles with PBS host Tavis Smiley. King will interview Smiley for his eponymous PBS program, as Smiley prepares to celebrate 20 years in broadcasting.

It will be the first TV interview King has conducted since leaving his nightly perch at CNN, according to PBS, and it will be first time that Smiley has been interviewed on his own show. Smiley has filled in for King on occasion at CNN.

“Larry King was an inspiration for me when I started my own late-night talk show eight years ago,” said Smiley in a statement. “One of the highlights of my broadcast career was the opportunity to periodically guest host for Larry King on CNN. It is an honor to now have him interview me on my program. It will be two great nights of conversation as we reflect on our combined 70+ years of broadcasting experience.”

With Amanpour Settling In, NBC Feels Out the State of the Sunday Shows

NBC News, through market research firm Vision Critical, has put out a survey asking consumers about the Sunday morning public affairs shows, with a particular focus on “Meet the Press” and ABC’s “This Week,” according to a copy obtained by TVNewser.

There were a number of questions about the two programs, covering everything from the perceived ideology of the hosts David Gregory and Christiane Amanpour, to the makeup of guests on the programs. Other questions asked about the pace of the two shows, and the humor of Amanpour and Gregory. Apparently CBS’ “Face the Nation” and Fox’s “Fox News Sunday” did not make the cut, as they did not get singled out for questions.

With regard to “Meet the Press,” the “roundtable” portion of the program seems to be of particular interest to the network.

The survey asks whether respondents prefer the roundtable portion of the show or the newsmaker interview portion, and then asks about the composition of guests on the roundtable.

It also lists 18 people who are either regulars on the roundtable, or semi-regulars, and asks respondents to rate them on their appearances. Among the names:

In addition to participating in the Fortune, TIME and CNN Global Forum in South Africa (the 11th iteration), speakers including Katie Couric, Wolf Blitzer and former Pres. Bill Clinton caught some of the action at yesterday’s USA / Ghana match at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Other scheduled speakers included Suze Orman and Tavis Smiley, but neither could make it. During halftime of the game, Blitzer Tweeted this picture of Couric, himself and a famous musician.

Another perk: really cool matching red jackets. Orman would be proud.

New York’s THIRTEEN has posted messages from a number of big names as a tribute to Moyers in his final week. Among the well-wishers are Stephen Colbert, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Tavis Smiley, Andrew Ross Sorkin, Jon Meacham, Alison Stewart, and PBS President Paula Kerger.

HDNet’s Dan Rather writes: “He and [his wife] Judith formed a team that became a national treasure. Take a long, thoughtful look. We may not see the likes of it again anytime soon.”

Brit Hume on the Fox Fight: ‘Hoist a Jolly Roger, Pull out our Daggers and Look for More Throats to Slit’

In your Monday morning Fox News vs. White House update, we have this from Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume, who tells the LATimes‘ Matea Gold: “We may be No. 1, but there is sort of an insurgent quality to Fox News. And that’s kind of our attitude: ‘Hoist a Jolly Roger, pull out our daggers and look for more throats to slit.’ This is tremendous fodder for us. My lord, we’ve been living on it.”

And from the New Yorker‘s Louis Menand:

It’s hard to kill the press, but it is not hard to chill it, and this appears to be the White House’s goal in the case of Fox. “The best analogy is probably baseball,” Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said-meaning that throwing a few inside fastballs, a little chin music, gets hitters to back off the plate. Maybe, but he should also remember that deliberately throwing at a batter is grounds for ejection. The state may, and should, rebut opinions that it finds obnoxious, but it should not single out speakers for the purpose of intimidating them. At the end of the day, you do not want your opponents to be able to say that they could not be heard. It may be exasperating, but that is what the First Amendment is all about.

And Politico’s Mike Allen writes, Fox News isn’t the only target on the White House’s dartboard. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the focus of “a campaign by the White House and its allies to undermine [the] $200-million-a-year association.”

The fight with Fox News has been more pointed and sustained – and is much less likely to abate anytime soon, while the spat with the Chamber is more delicate for the White House.

And, one more clip from the Sunday shows. On “Meet the Press,” Jane Mayer, Joe Scarborough, Dan Senor and Tavis Smiley discussed the Obama administration’s approach to the news network:
