The Weather Channel’s Stormy Negotiations With DirectTV

The-Weather-ChannelThe Los Angeles Times reports DirectTV is issuing subtle threats about dropping The Weather Channel as their carriage deal is about to expire.

The satellite broadcasting company has started distributing another weather network, in a move that appears to try and force TWC’s hand.

DirectTV, the El Segundo satellite broadcaster with more than 20 million subscribers around the country, has quietly started distributing a network called WeatherNation just as its deal to carry the Weather Channel is set to expire.

Although talks between the two companies are ongoing, DirecTV’s decision to add WeatherNation is seen as a not-so-subtle threat that it is willing to drop the Weather Channel.

Weather Channel executives are reportedly annoyed, as DirectTV has placed the new WeatherNation right next to TWC on the dial. Read more

The Weather Channel’s Search for Therapy Dog

the-weather-channel304x200The Weather Channel and the American Humane Society are teaming up for a nationwide search to find the perfect weather-therapy dog.

Viewers and animal shelters across the country are being enlisted in the search starting Monday, December 30. The network is looking for a friendly, camera-comfortable rescue dog who’s at least 1-year-old. Past experiences with natural disasters is a plus.

“The Weather Channel supports the mission of American Humane Association, which helps in the search and day-to-day care for our four-legged friends after the devastation of many severe weather events,” said The Weather Channel network president David Clark. “We often feature news of AHA’s important work on our television, web and mobile properties, and this partnership formalizes our relationship to better serve communities together.” Read more

Has Sam Champion Changed His Forecast on Naming Storms?

Now that he’s Managing Editor at The Weather Channel, Sam Champion has apparently changed his tune on the virtue of naming severe storms.

Yesterday, he tweeted a fan about the topic.

Flashback to earlier this year, his forecast on the subject was much different:

Sam Champion: ‘I Grew Up Here. This Will Always Be My Home’

Sam ChampionFor viewers who hadn’t heard the news, Sam Champion announced his departure from “Good Morning America” for The Weather Channel this morning.

Speaking to his co-hosts, Champion spoke about the joy of working with friends and “family.”

“What happens on this set is incredibly real and natural…even my grumpy mornings,” he joked. “It’s what happens here before the show, that makes the show.”

He talked about his move as the “co-captain” of the “holy grail” of weather.

“What they’re doing right now is changing the way that we’ll all get our weather,” Champion continued. “To be able to join everybody, the very best in weather, and to try to do something that is changing the way America gets its weather…I had to try it.”

“GMA” sends Champion off tomorrow with a special tribute.
