Insana Returns: “The One Regret I have is We Ended Up Losing Money”

insana_3-16.jpgThe New York Times’ Tim Arango writes about the return of Ron Insana to CNBC.

Insana started his own hedge fund, and later left it and CNBC in August to join SAC Capital. “The one regret I have is we ended up losing money,” Insana said.

But earlier this month he returned to the network, in a part-time role.

Now Insana says he can share his experience as a player in the financial market with the TV audience. “I got to see it first-hand,” he said. “In the media world, you rarely get the chance to go inside.”

CNBC’s Past Three Weeks: “Moment in the Spotlight” or “Going Overboard”?

cnbc_3-9.jpgOver the last three weeks, CNBC and its on-air personalities have been a focus, both good and bad, from the White House to Wall Street.

“Whether the attention is positive or negative, it is certain that this tumultuous financial season is CNBC’s reason for being,” writes the New York Times’ Brian Stelter and Tim Arango, while noting some in the organization have begun referring to it as, “the recession network.”

“It has certainly received a lot more notoriety, and along with that a lot more audience,” says CNBC president Mark Hoffman.

But, what about the increasingly outspoken anchors? “Three CNBC employees, who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said that the role of opinion on the channel had been a subject of frequent discussion,” reports the Times.

Jon Friedman of Marketwatch writes, “CNBC seems to want, if not prefer, its on-air ‘talent’ to raise the theatrics level as high as it can go,” he writes.

And comparing the network to ESPN, he writes: “CNBC loses sight of the idea that the public takes investing, and the economy, much more seriously than sports fans debate baseball or football headlines.”

Strange Bedfellows in Sun Valley

New York Times reporter Tim Arango has found himself the subject of a news item for the second time this week. From FishbowlLA’s Dan Cox reporting from the Sun Valley media summit:

In the strange bedfellows department, the New York Times and the New York Post, always bitter enemies in the news arena, ended up splitting the cost of a Sun Valley Lodge suite for Times reporter Tim Arango and his girlfriend, Post photographer Victoria Will. The couple, who ironically met at Sun Valley four years ago, have been dating ever since.

When Private Details Become Part of Public Relations

arango_7-7.JPGOne of the first orders of business regarding David Carr‘s New York Times column was connecting the dots to what Carr was referring to in this line: “A colleague of mine said, he was writing a story about CNN’s gains in the ratings and was told on deadline by a Fox News public relations executive that if he persisted, ‘they’ would go after him. Within a day, ‘they’ did, smearing him around the blogs, he said.”

Today Jossip did not confirm whether the details came from Fox News.

While we’re firm believers in the “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” theory, it would be as foolish to think the spinmeisters at Fox News’ PR unit were involved with the item anymore so than it would be foolish to not even entertain the possibility that The Times newsroom is actually a leak-plagued institution where many a staffer will very willingly air “close held” gossip as a means to get ahead. Because it is.

Carr didn’t take kindly to the Jossip post when it was published in May (a point he didn’t make in the column). In fact, he contacted his “drinking buddy” at Jossip about it.
