High School Football Star Gets His Own Smartphone App

College football recruiters have no excuse not to know the name Kelvin Taylor, thanks to a new smartphone app.

Developer Billy Carson of ZenForce Media created the Android app for the Glades Day School junior running back, which includes highlight videos, game photos, and the latest tweets from his Twitter account, @ImKelvinTaylor.

His father, former NFL running back Fred Taylor, approached Carson about creating the app for his son. Since its launch two weeks ago, the app has been downloaded 180 times. An app for the iPhone should be available in the near future. continued…

During the third period of Game 5 against San Jose, the Red Wings scored three goals against the Sharks to stave off elimination for the second straight game and inch within 3-2 in the series. This prompted commentator Jeremy Roenick to call Sharks center Patrick Marleau “gutless” and say he’s suffering from an injury — to his heart. Marleau, a former teammate of Roenick’s, has no points in the series and allowed a crucial turnover to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk that led to the Red Wings’ game-winning goal in the 4-3 victory.

Jimmer Fredette is featured on this week’s Sports Illustrated cover, in what appears to be an awesome photo of the BYU guard.

But Kevin Blackistone, who filled in for Michael Wilbon on Pardon the Interruption, is calling shenanigans when it comes to the photo. During the “Fill in the Blank” segment, Blackistone said he thinks the cover was “photoshopped.” continued…

The exuberant Johnson, who splits his time between CBS Sports, Showtime and the Big Ten Network, has the uncanny ability to make any sporting event that much more exciting.

Johnson spoke to SportsNewser about the biggest storyline at the halfway point of the NFL season and the top three moments during his broadcasting career.

SportsNewser: How aware are you of your popularity? For any sports fan under 35, you’re a God to them.

Gus Johnson: I’m really appreciative to the responses I have got from some of the fans. It’s really cool. It’s kind of overwhelming at times because you really don’t realize what kind of impact you have on people that are watching the game.

Why the NFL Struggles to Gain a Foothold in Europe

On Sunday, the San Francisco Giants and the Denver Broncos played a brutally game (shite?) football game at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The game was the fourth installment of “NFL goes to Europe,” a plan to increase the sport’s popularity across the pond.

I spent many a Friday night a decade ago driving to watch high-school football in invisible towns in rural Kansas, and before that accompanying football-mad friends to watch nascent gridiron teams clash in the incongruous setting of Sunday summer afternoons in England, but it never stuck beyond the spectacle and sense of occasion. The top PR executive for CBS Sports, LeslieAnne Wade, is leaving the company to start her own media strategy and public relations firm, the network says. Wade’s first client will be CBS Sports, where she will be “closely involved in the overall media relations effort around CBS Sports businesses, personalities and programming.”

Wade has been with CBS since 1993.

“I take such tremendous pride in my long time association with CBS Sports,” said Wade in a statement.Â “With the support of Leslie Moonves, Gil Schwartz and Sean McManus, I was given an opportunity to further a path in new media relations, and for women in sports television. It is an enormous professional compliment to count CBS Sports as the first client in my new venture.”

After several weeks of getting stuck with games that were blacked out locally, Johnson and Steve Tasker will call Kansas City-Houston on Sunday.

Pepsi Gets Back in the Super Bowl Game

Oh good, it’s time to talk about Super Bowl advertisements again.

The USA Today reports that Pepsi will jump back into the ring, promoting Pepsi Max – which is struggling against Coke Zero – with three ads. Last year, the brand chose to go the online route and avoiding splurging on the most-watched game in television history. Mistake.

The brand will offer a reward for consumer-created ads that (synergy alert!) finish high in USA Today‘s Super Bowl Ad Meter. Last year, Snicker’s Betty White ad finished first, followed by the Doritos’ human collar spot.

Fox has sold more than 90 percent of its available slots for the February game, much better than last year when multiple brands opted out due to economic reasons and the network was forced to hold a last-minute sale for its remain inventory.
