Ari Melber joins MSNBC’s 3pmET show “The Cycle” as a panelist.

Melber has been with MSNBC as a contributor since 2011. Melber joins S.E. Cupp, Krystal Ball and Touré on the program. He replaces Steve Kornacki, who is moving to weekends to anchor “Up.” Melber continues as a correspondent for “The Nation.”

Ebony magazine has revealed its Power 100 list of the most influential African Americans. On the list, Pres. Barack and Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Bishop T.D. Jakes. On the media side, ABC’s Robin Roberts is on the list. And while it’s made up of 99 individuals or couples, a book and a movie, one entire entity — MSNBC — is on the list. MSNBC counts Rev. Al Sharpton, Tamron Hall, Melissa Harris-Perry and Toure as regular hosts and in the just completed October ratings report, MSNBC marked its 33rd straight month as the the #1 cable channel among African American viewers (Mon-Sun, primetime).

Donald Trump & the NBC News/Entertainment Industrial Complex

On CNBC this afternoon, John Harwood said of reality TV host Donald Trump:

“Yesterday Donald Trump was on our air saying he would have a major announcement about the race. It wasn’t major at all, turned out just to be another publicity stunt by Donald Trump appealing to the crackpot fringe of American politics that raises questions about Barack Obama’s American-ness.”

On MSNBC just after 12 PM, host Alex Wagner called Trump “a nutty conspiracy theorist dressed up as a real estate mogulist for Halloween.”

The cause of the comments was the “announcement” from Trump (hyped on CNBC and Fox News before they knew what it was) that he would donate $5 million to a charity of President Obama’s choice if the President releases his college and passport records.

The comments on CNBC and MSNBC are particularly relevant, because NBC and the NBC family of networks are by far Trump’s biggest booster in the media.

‘The Cycle’ Hosts Get Personal

NBCUDirect sat down for drinks with the hosts from MSNBC’s “The Cycle” at the Rockefeller Center Rink Bar.

Among the questions (this one to Toure): Who would you rather hang out with, Piers Morgan or Bill O’Reilly?

“Clearly America agrees with me that they are not interested in watching Piers Morgan, and Bill, when he is away from the show, is actually a really interesting, cool guy, absolutely Bill O’Reilly all day,” Toure responded.

Of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t note that Morgan usually draws more total and demo viewers than “The Cycle” does, but hey, let’s not that get in the way of an insult, right Toure?

MSNBC Host Apologizes After ‘N-Word’ Controversy

MSNBC “The Cycle” co-host Touré apologized on today’s program for using the “n-word” during a segment yesterday. Specifically, Touré said Mitt Romney‘s campaign was sending coded racial messages by using certain words and phrases in campaign speeches.

“I know it’s a heavy thing, I don’t say it lightly, but this is ‘niggerization,’ You are not one of us, you are like the scary black man who we’ve been trained to fear.”

Today, the host seemed to stand by his comments, but walked back his language.

“I muddied the discussion by using the ‘n-word,’ I could’ve made the same point without that word,” he said. “I shouldn’t have used it and for that I’m sorry.”

How’s ‘The Cycle’ Doing on MSNBC?

In its first two weeks on the air, MSNBC’s “The Cycle,” made up of an ensemble of hosts including Toure, S.E. Cupp, Steve Kornacki, and Krystal Ball, is holding its own down just -1% in Total Viewers compared to the same period last year when Martin Bashir‘s show aired at 3pm. But the show is down -36% where it counts, in the A25-54 demo.

In its first two weeks (which included the July 4 holiday last week) “The Cycle” is averaging 383,000 Total Viewers and 77,000 A25-54 viewers.

Compared to the previous month, “The Cycle” is down -16% in the demo and down -5% in Total Viewers.

But MSNBC is fully aware that it takes any new show time to build an audience. A year ago today, FNC’s “The Five” — which “The Cycle” resembles — debuted. In its first two weeks the show averaged 1.25 million total viewers and 261K in the demo. So far for July “The Five” is averaging 1.83 million Total Viewers and 405,000 A25-54 viewers.

What The Heck Is ‘The Cycle’?

“The Cycle” debuted on MSNBC today, and as part of the first episode, co-host Touré explained what the show was all about.

“We are a group of friends having a dinner party in the afternoon, and we are going to invite you into our party, where we are going to talk about politics and culture in the ensemble format that has existed since the beginning of television, because it still works,” he said.

Touré said that social media will be a big part of the new show. MediabistroTV spoke to the host last year, where he told us about he uses Twitter and social media to connect with fans.

MSNBC’s New 3PM Show: ‘The Cycle’

MSNBC has finalized its plans for its new 3 PM show. It will be called “The Cycle,” and will be a panel ensemble show hosted by MSNBC contributors S.E. Cupp, Touré, Krystal Ball and Steve Kornacki. MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan announced the program at the end of his 4-5 PM show. Ratigan will be leaving MSNBC, with Martin Bashir moving to his timeslot, hence the opening at 3 PM.

If “The Cycle” sounds an awful lot like Fox News Channel’s “The Five,” that’s because it is a lot like “The Five,” except there will be four hosts instead of five. As it happens, when Ratigan was introducing the team, he referred to them as “The Four,” twice, and did not mention that the show was actually called “The Cycle.”

Of course, “The Five” is a knockoff of “The View,” which is in turn a knockoff of the many ensemble shows that came before it. What “The Five” did do though was prove than an ensemble show could work with a political focus on cable news, though one could also argue that the old “Crossfire” paved the way too.

The Huffington Post talked to EP Steve Friedman about the show.

“Cable television is programs about the news,” he said. “it’s no longer the news. Nobody turns on to find out what happens, because they already know from you guys. What people are interested in is listening and watching people give their take.”

George Zimmerman to Be Charged In Trayvon Martin Shooting

The Washington Post reported right around 2 PM that George Zimmerman would be charged by state prosecutors in the shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin. The exact charges will be announced in a press conference at 6 PM ET.

Fox News reported the news at 2:13 PM, citing the Post, MSNBC reported the news at 2:19, citing its own reporting, and CNN reported the news at 2:24, citing the Post.

Following the news, CNN and FNC went into legal analysis mode, while MSNBC has brought on “PoliticsNation” host Al Sharpton and contributor Toure.

Sharpton, who was identified on MSNBC as the director of the National Action Network, also popped up on CNN with martin’s parents around 2:54 PM:

Touré Apologizes for Piers Morgan Rant, Blames ‘Masculine Bravado BS’

MSNBC contributor Touré went on Piers Morgan‘s CNN show Friday night discussing the Trayvon Martin case, and the discussion turned to Touré saying Morgan isn’t qualified to comment on the case. “You are too new to this situation to fully understand what’s really going on here, and what’s really at stake here for America.”

“What a load of fatuous nonsense you speak,” Morgan shot back.

Cutline’s Dylan Stableford reports, Toure took to Twitter Saturday night to write: “I should not have gotten caught up in ‘winning’ the debate with Piers. I got caught up with ‘winning’ on some masculine bravado bs when my whole point has always been justice for this boy. I lost sight of that.”

Morgan isn’t taking the apology and moving on. In reference to this story, this morning Morgan has been Tweeting things like:

A Number of Newsers Make Root 100 List, Despite Odd Absences

The Root has released its 2011 list of the most influential African Americans, and many TV news personalities are present. Leading the way are CNN anchors Soledad O’Brien and Don Lemon at #5 and #6. MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall represented her channel at #14, along with MSNBC regular Melissa Harris-Perry.

The other CNNers that made the list were Suzanne Malveaux, Roland Martin, T.J. Holmes, while MSNBC contributors were comprised of Harold Ford Jr. and Toure.

Jeter Splits from Minka Kelly

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Charlie’s Angels actress Minka Kelly have reportedly split up after three years, news that wouldn’t be relevant here if one half of this equation weren’t a future Hall of Fame shortstop with a track record of dating some of contemporary society’s most attractive actresses and singers. Jeter has been linked to Scarlett Johansson, Jordana Brewster, Mariah Carey, among others.

Recent speculation said Jeter and Kelly were headed for marriage, but that seems less likely now. Rest assured Jeter and Kelly’s faces will be on the covers of People, Us Weekly and numerous other tabloids this week (“What happened!?!?”), not to mention the back page of tomorrow’s New York tabloid newspapers. Obviously we’re most eager to hear what Michael Kay has to say about the matter.
