The “Street Smart” anchor — who originally wanted to be an opera singer — talks about how she ended up in television:

I got a lot of exposure to the financial community through internships during school summers. First at a hedge fund and then as an analyst in at Goldman Sachs. At Goldman, I worked on the emerging debt markets desk and really liked it. I was analyzing the economic and political consequences of what was going on in Latin America and thought that was what I was going to do upon graduation. They made me a job offer, and I had every intention of going, except in my senior year I interned at NBC Nightly News and suddenly, everything made sense. I’d found my calling.

How did you land that job?

I just sent in an application and told them I would work every single holiday! They needed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s covered, and I said, “I’m your girl.”

Regan also talks about her upcoming projects, including a series of reports on Brazil’s economy which air next week on “Street Smart.”

“’60 Minutes’ is one of the great brands in the history of television,” Nevins said to Bloomberg’s Trish Regan. “I do not think Showtime was a brand that CBS would have trusted two years ago, but now you get in that cycle of everything feeding into each other.”

    Shortly before 5pmET, the cable news networks turned their attention to breaking news that Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has died from cancer.

    Bloomberg TV’s Trish Regan reported Chavez’s death at 4:53pmET. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer followed at 4:55pmET, sourcing Venezuela television. MSNBC’s Martin Bashir was next at 4:57pmET, reporting that NBC News had confirmed Chavez’s death. Fox News’ Andrea Tantaros reported the news at the top of “The Five,” with the network getting independent conformation at 5:04pmET. Shepard Smith took over anchoring for FNC at 5:12pmET.

Axelrod and his wife Susan hosted many Manhattan luminaries at the CURE New York reception at which Mayor Mike Bloomberg was presented an award for his support. In his brief remarks, Bloomberg caught sight of NBC’s Tom Brokaw in the crowd: “There’s Tom Brokaw. He’s my neighbor …. and my golf partner. Maybe he’ll even give me a few strokes next round.”

    TVNewser spotted Fox News chairman Roger Ailes giving a warm hello to Susan Axelrod and Arianna Huffington as David Axelrod gave his remarks. The Axelrods established CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy as the family struggled to come to terms with their daughter Lauren’s epilepsy. Now 31, Lauren experienced her first seizure at seven months old.

    We chatted with “CBS This Morning” anchor Charlie Rose, who, with his co-hosts Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell, is treating the “This Morning” staff to a holiday party next week. “It takes two jobs to be able to do it, but we’ll do it,” joked Rose, who also hosts “Charlie Rose” on PBS and Bloomberg TV.

    The three business networks have turned their focus to severe weather coverage today as Hurricane Sandy forced the close of the stock markets. Bloomberg TV, Fox Business and CNBC have all set special coverage plans for today that focus on the economic impact of the storm, expected to make landfall later today.

    Bloomberg TV will shift into special Hurricane Sandy coverage at 1pmET, which is when the storm’s intensity is supposed to increase on the East Coast. Stephanie Ruhle and Erik Schatzker anchor the 1pmET hour, Betty Liu anchors the 2pmET hour and Trish Regan and Adam Johnson anchor from 3-6pmET. Meteorologist Bonnie Schneider is handling weather forecasts.

    Fox Business broadcast a special report in place of “Imus in the Morning” this morning, anchored by Dagen McDowell and Connell McShane. FBN’s Robert Gray is in Battery Park and Sandra Smith is at the CME throughout the day. Neil Cavuto will host primetime coverage of the storm tonight beginning at 7pmET.

    CNBC will have regular programming until 7pmET. The network is replacing “The Kudlow Report” with a live two-hour special report anchored by Bill Griffeth and Michelle Caruso-Cabrera.
