Willie Geist, Natalie Morales Will Host Nik Wallenda Walk Across Grand Canyon

In June, daredevil Nik Wallenda will attempt to walk across the Grand Canyon on a tightrope, live on Discovery Channel. NBC News’ Peacock Productions will be producing the jump, and so NBC “Today” co-hosts Willie Geist and Natalie Morales will be serving as the hosts of the event.

Wallenda announced the addition of Geist and Morales while walking on a tightrope above the audience at Discovery’s upfront presentation in New York yesterday (see the photo to the left). For insurance purposes, he was wearing a harness, “don’t worry though,” he said yesterday. “I won’t be wearing one when I walk across the Canyon.”

Last year ABC aired Wallenda’s walk across Niagara Falls, with “Good Morning America’”s Josh Elliott and “SportsCenter’”s Hannah Storm hosting. The event drew record ratings for ABC. ABC and Discovery were in a bidding war for the Grand Canyon stunt, with Discovery simply making the better offer. NBC, as the producer of the show, will also benefit.

Jeter 3000th Hit Documentary Premieres July 28 on HBO

The combined HBO/MLB documentary on Derek Jeter‘s quest for 3000 hits — Derek Jeter 3Kpremieres next Thursday, July 28, at 9 p.m. on HBO. The Yankee captain wore a microphone for the game against Tampa Bay in which he went 5-5 and collected his milestone base hit on a home run off Rays left-hander David Price, so the hour-long documentary promises to include some previously unseen aspects to the future Hall of Famer’s on-field approach. Jeter, who had never been miced up during a game prior to this documentary, also wore a microphone in the game prior to his record-setting day.

It’ll be interesting to see how much time in the documentary is devoted to Christian Lopez, the selfless Yankee fan who asked for nothing in exchange for returning the milestone ball to Jeter. Lopez became a story himself when it came to light that he owed more than a $100,000 in school loans and would be hit with taxes on the free goods and services he received from the Yankees for turning over the valuable piece of memorabilia to Jeter.

The Inspiration Behind “Black in America 2″

John Rice, Malaak Compton-Rock, Dr. Steve Perry, Soledad O’Brien, Cicely Tyson and CNN EP Mark Nelson at last night’s “Black in America 2″ screening in Harlem, NY.

Last night we headed up to Harlem for the New York screening of CNN’s “Black in America 2.” The four-hour documentary is a continuation of the Soledad O’Brien series which drew 16 million viewers over several airings last year.

This time around, O’Brien and her team report on the stories of successful community leaders who are improving the lives of African-Americans, including Malaak Compton-Rock, the wife of comedian Chris Rock, who, along with O’Brien traveled to South Africa with two dozen teens for two weeks of volunteer service in shanty towns and orphanages. Actor/producer/director Tyler Perry gives O’Brien a tour of his movie studio – not in Hollywood – but in Atlanta. And there’s the story of John Rice, the brother of U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice (and brother-in-law of “This Week” EP Ian Cameron) who created the “Management Leadership for Tomorrow” program.

In the crowd, Oprah’s BFF Gayle King, actress Cicely Tyson, who is featured in the special, and Warner Music EVP Kevin Liles.
