UNC Names Angell as Heir to Durham

North Carolina has named Jones Angell as the new radio voice for Tar Heels’ football and basketball, succeeding the legendary Woody Durham who retired in April after 40 years at the mic for UNC.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to become the next play-by-play voice for Carolina athletics,” said Angell, who has been the school’s play-by-play baseball announcer for the last eight seasons. “The guys on the broadcast with me are so good at what they do. Having them there will make this transition much easier.”

Angell graduated from UNC in 2001. In addition to his baseball work, he has been a host and color analyst for the Tar Heel Sports Network the last six years.

Video: Vin Scully Relates a Jack McKeon Twitter Tale

When an octogenarian broadcaster attempts to relate a Twitter-related tale about an octogenarian baseball manager, you can be certain that something will be lost in translation and that youngins will have a good chuckle. Such was the case when 83-year-old Dodgers announcer Vin Scully regaled listeners with some tale about 80-year-old Marlins manager Jack McKeon talking to a Marlins player about “going home to play Twitter.” Scully seems to be making light of McKeon’s ignorance about the medium, but it’s rather obvious that Scully is somewhat in the dark himself.
