Walters, O’Reilly, Couric and More Hit THR’s Media Power Party

As we told you yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter is out with its annual “35 Most Powerful People in Media” list. The honorees were feted at a “power-soaked New York party” at the Four Seasons restaurant Wednesday night.

From CBS News, chairman Jeff Fager was there, along with “CBS This Morning” co-hosts Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell, “60 Minutes” correspondent Morley Safer, “Evening News” anchor Scott Pelley and “Sunday Morning” correspondent Mo Rocca. CNN’s Piers Morgan was there, as was Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. The “Today” show’s Willie Geist and “Live!” co-hosts Michael Strahan and Kelly Ripa attended, along with talk show hosts Wendy Williams and Katie Couric. And from ABC News, president Ben Sherwood, “The View” anchor Barbara Walters, senior VP for content and development James Goldston and “Good Morning America” anchors Lara Spencer and George Stephanopoulos, who was with his wife, Ali Wentworth.

Soledad O’Brien: CNN ‘Talking About My Role’ At The Channel

CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien appeared on “The Wendy Williams Show,” and appeared to dismiss a New York Post report earlier this week that she was heading out the door of the cable channel. Rather, O’Brien insinuated that while she is likely to leave the mornings, she is still hoping to stay with the channel.

“You know, we’re talking about my role,” O’Brien said in response to a question asked by Williams. “As you know, it’s been reported that the morning show is going a different direction, so we’re talking about what ways I can contribute to CNN. Doing stuff like I like to do which is hard-hitting journalism.”

O’Brien was then asked if what she would “like to do” involved an evening show.

“That would be a schedule I would like, actually,” O’Brien said. “But I like doing documentaries, I like doing hard-hitting–grilling people–it is sort of my thing.”

Reading between the lines, it is apparent what O’Brien’s situation is.

Ken Strickland, Robin Roberts Named to Annual ‘TheGrio’s 100′ List

In honor of Black History Month, NBC’s theGrio.com has announced its annual “theGrio 100″ list of “African-American history makers and industry leaders who are making a difference in the lives of all Americans.”

Media personalities on this year’s list include NBC News Washington bureau chief Ken Strickland, ABC’s “Good Morning America” co-host Robin Roberts, “Live! With Kelly and Michael” co-host Michael Strahan and daytime talk show host Wendy Williams.

Between the Morning and the Evening, Katie Couric Settles In to Her Comfort Zone

If today’s long-awaited debut of Katie Couric’s syndicated talk show resembled an infomercial for Weight Watchers, that’s because it was.

The first three segments of Couric’s Disney chatfest were devoted almost entirely to guest Jessica Simpson’s post-partum weight loss — thanks to Weight Watchers. There were so many rhapsodic plugs, I kept waiting for the 800 number and my free ginzu knife.

Simpson gushed about her new role as a Weight Watchers poster girl. Then came a sneak preview of her Weight Watchers ad, followed by a full segment joined by her Weight Watchers coach. The capper was a free two-week Weight Watchers membership, via ‘Katie’s’ website.

To be kind, Jessica Simpson was no Sarah Palin, but Couric appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the absence of heavy lifting. After her hellish tenure as anchor of ‘CBS Evening News,’ ‘Katie’ must feel like a fabulous, all-expenses paid vacation. Hey, if Anderson Cooper did it, why not Couric?

Call it ‘Today Extra Lite.’

As has become the fashion, ‘Katie’ opened with a cutesy taped bit. More than a little derivative, given that she did the same thing for her guest-hosting stint on ‘Good Morning America’ in April.

She wakes up from a weird dream and proceeds to tell it to a mystery person in the other twin bed. (An homage to ‘I Love Lucy?’) “I dreamed I left ‘Today’ to anchor the evening news, and I did it for five years, and then I dreamed I was going to be hosting my own daytime talk show!”

Peeling back the covers, a jammies-clad Matt Lauer says: “That wasn’t a dream, and the talk show starts right now!” Cue hilarity.

After almost a full half-hour of Jessica Simpson and Weight Watchers, however, I was reeling from estrogen-induced boredom. Thankfully, the next guest, Sheryl Crow, who composed ‘Katie’s’ up-tempo theme song and is a good friend of the host, had some interesting things to say.

Katie Couric Chooses Bryant Gumbel Over Matt Lauer

Mediabistro was at Wendy Williams‘s studio yesterday where we taped our mediabistroTV series “My First Big Break.” When we got there, Katie Couric happened to be taping a segment with Williams for Couric’s upcoming daytime talk show. The exchange included a sort of “would you rather?” back and forth. At one point, Williams asks Couric who would she rather sleep with: Bryant Gumbel or Matt Lauer. Couric chose Gumbel, because, she says, she feels so close to Lauer it would just be weird. We’re told the shoot is for the debut of “Katie” which premieres Sept. 10. “My First Big Break” with Wendy Williams will launch on mediabistro.com July 26. continued…

ABC’s Robin Roberts Interviews Chris Brown

First, Rihanna sat down with Diane Sawyer, now Chris Brown will sit down with Robin Roberts for an upcoming “20/20.”

Brown will discuss his assault of Rihanna, a crime for which he remains on probation.

The interview, which was taped last weekend, will air on “20/20″ Dec. 11, with clips airing on GMA in the days before.

Brown’s new album “Graffiti” comes out three days before the interview airs. Brown’s already done interviews with Larry King and Wendy Williams.

Nas Takes Break From Protesting FOX to Appear On It

The rapper Nas has a well-documented beef with Fox News going back almost a year. It includes a this protest outside News Corp.’s headquarters two weeks ago and a song on his new album.

In “Sly Fox” he calls out Rupert Murdoch by name, as well as some of his properties including MySpace and New York’s Fox station, WNYW: “Watch what you say Fox 5 is watching,” he raps.

So it seemed a little odd today to see Nas appearing on the Wendy Williams Show, currently in a six-week trial on the Fox stations in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Detroit.

Nets to Carry Bush Newser

President Bush will hold a news conference in the White House briefing room at 10:20amET. ABC, CBS and NBC will all carry the news conference, as will the cable news networks and, considering much of it will be focused on the economy, expect the business networks to carry some of it as well.

One person not in attendance: the dean of the White House press corps, Helen Thomas. Insiders tell us 87-year-old Thomas, who has covered every president since Kennedy, has not been feeling well the past few weeks. Her seat in the front row will be empty.
