What Kind of Anchorman Will Jake Tapper Be? ‘They Don’t Want Me to be Ron Burgundy’

Former ABC ace Jake Tapper, who debuted on CNN Tuesday, says that his being passed over — twice — as ‘This Week’ anchor was not the reason he left the network.

When ABC chose CNN’s Christiane Amanpour for ‘This Week’ in 2010, “obviously I had a degree of disappointment, “ Tapper says, “but it wasn’t as though they were putting Mario Lopez in there. Christiane’s a legend.”

Less than 18 months later, when George Stephanopoulos returned to ‘This Week’– again, no hard feelings, Tapper insists. “It’s George’s show. It was logical for him to want to do it. He’s also a journalistic legend.”

What did it for Tapper was his own weekday show at CNN, most likely to launch in March or April, in addition to being named Chief Washington Correspondent. New CNN Worldwide boss Jeff Zucker made the offer over breakfast last month at a secret undisclosed location in New York.

Tapper, in Philadelphia Thursday to promote his new book, ‘The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor,’ says he expects to take over the 4 p.m. hour currently occupied by Wolf Blitzer’s ‘Situation Room.’ Blitzer will be cut back to 5 to 7 p.m.

If all goes well, could this be a prelude to Tapper breaking into the prime-time lineup?

‘Anchorman 2′ Sets Release Date

Good news everyone! The sequel to the 2004 comedy “Anchorman” finally has a release date. “Anchorman: The Legend Continues” will debut in theaters December 20, 2013.

Comedian Will Ferrell announced the plans for the sequel back in March during a taping of “Conan.” The first trailer, which featured Ferrell and actors Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and David Koechner, was released in May. We also noted that actor Vince Vaughn is among the celebrities slated to make cameo appearances in the next film.

The plot of the film is still unclear, though we now that there will be a musical element, and the transformation from hard news to entertainment news will play a part of the plot.

The plot of “Anchorman 2″ is still shrouded in secrecy, but the New York Post has a few tidbits at what might be in store when the film comes to theaters next year. First up is a musical element, and second is a plotline focusing on one of the most transformative parts of TV news in the last few decades, particularly on the morning shows:

“We are going to focus on and comment on the transition from what was kind of traditional news to where entertainment forces started melding in, and Ron’s going to be one of the catalysts of that,” he said.

ESPN Commentator Jay Mariotti Arrested

FanHouse.com columnist Jay Mariotti, who also appears regularly on ESPN’s “Around the Horn,” was arrested Saturday for suspicion of “felony domestic assault.”

The Los Angeles Times’ Andrew Blankstein and Garrett Therolf have the details:

LAPD sources said that Mariotti allegedly got into an argument with his girlfriend at a club in Santa Monica and that they were observed exchanging harsh words before leaving in a car. Mariotti became angry after he suspected his girlfriend of flirting with another man, police sources said.

The argument continued at the couple’s Venice-area apartment, where Mariotti allegedly pushed and shoved the woman. During the altercation, Mariotti grabbed her arm, leaving marks, the sources said.

“Matt Lauer Can Suck It!”

Matt Lauer is not just anchor of the Today show, he’s an actor (playing himself). At least he was in a couple different mediums last night during “30 Rock.”

During the show, he was forced to appease Jack Donaghy‘s girlfriend’s grandmother (clip after the jump). But he was also featured prominently in a full trailer for the upcoming “Land of the Lost” movie that played during a commercial break, interviewing Dr. Rick Marshall (played by Will Ferrell) — before being attacked by him on the Today set.
