Geist Talks Blago as TV Star on Today’s “Menu”: “I Think He’s Too Crazy”

geist_2-2.jpgMorning Joe‘s Willie Geist joined us this morning on the Morning Media Menu podcast, minutes after leaving the MSNBC set. In fact, he was still wearing his studio make-up (“Even when I’m not on TV, I like to wear make-up for interviews,” he said).

Does Geist think Gov. Rod Blagojevich will be the next big media star? “I think he’s too crazy,” he said.

We also talked about last night’s Super Bowl — and NBC breaking records for ad sales. “It’s hard to imagine worse economic times, and people [are] still jumping at the chance to throw down three million bucks for 30 seconds,” said Geist.

One of the Super Bowl ads people are talking about today is Pepsi’s Bob Dylan/ ad. Willie liked it, but “I’m not sure Will-dot-I-dot-M is the voice of this generation. Maybe he is and I don’t know about it.”

Also discussed: Sarah Palin‘s political future, Caroline Kennedy‘s media meltdown and more.

You can listen to the podcast live every morning at 9amET on and call in at 646-929-0321. You can also subscribe to the iTunes feed of the podcast by clicking the “iTunes” button.

State of “State of the Union”

state_1-26.jpg“State of the Union,” CNN’s weekend show anchored by John King, was in its new studio for the first time yesterday. Among the guests that joined King were David Plouffe and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Also on the broadcast, debuted his new video, “New Day,” exclusive to CNN. It includes video shot by and his crew at the Inauguration.

Some tipsters emailed about technical problems during the broadcast, including tapes not playing properly and sound malfunctions. A CNN spokesperson tells TVNewser, “There were a few technical problems with the computer servers that run video and sound bites but overall things worked out smoothly during yesterday’s four-hour block of State of the Union.”

On Reliable Sources yesterday (or, as the release says: “On today’s Reliable Sources portion of CNN’s State of the Union with John King”), Howard Kurtz talked to CBS’ White House correspondent Chip Reid and took a closer look at MSNBC’s Inauguration coverage. Jon Klein On Holograms: “One Day All TV News Will Be Done That Way”

cnn_11-5.jpgMore than 27 million people watched the three cable news channels last night between 8-11pm. CNN, Fox News and MSNBC all set viewership records as the 21-month long presidential election came to a climax.

CNN was the top rated broadcast in both Total Viewers and the A25-54 demo. Last night saw CNN’s best-ever demo delivery.

“I think a lot of people got to see what the new CNN is all about,” CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein tells TVNewser, “A really energized post-partisan approach to delivering as much information as quickly as possible.”

Fox News Channel, which finished second in each category, saw its highest ever viewership in younger viewers and its second best ever in Total Viewers. The highest Total Viewer draw for FNC was during the VP debate last month.

The night was a success for MSNBC, too. The network had its highest-ever demo rating prime time. It also surpassed Fox News for second place once the race was called at 11pmET.

CNN produced the biggest gains in the demo compared to 2004 — up 102%. MSNBC was up 87% from four years ago and FNC was up 4%. “These are the results of several years worth of CNN putting its weight behind delivering the most news,” says Klein.

CNN stood out last night for its unique use of technology, including exit poll touchscreens and, yes, those holograms. Click continued to see how Klein thinks it went…
