The Fox Ticker: Ratings, Greta, Gruber,

  • Greta Van Susteren traveled to Midland, Texas today to interview President George W. Bush at his childhood home. The interviews airs tonight “On the Record” at 7pmET.

  • Sean Hannity sent a camera crew to MIT to talk with Jonathan Gruber, whose comments about Obamacare have made up much of Fox News’s coverage over the last week. Here’s some of what they got on campus, more tonight on “Hannity.”

The Morning Ticker: Fareed, Wolf, Onion, Amol

  • Politico reports the media watchdog group Our Bad Media isn’t done looking into the accounts of plagiarism against Fareed Zakaria. “Without serious, serious pressure from other journalists, we doubt that CNN will take any action.”

  • The DailyCaller reports there’s a situation brewing at CNN’s “The Situation Room.” Several staffers of the Wolf Blitzer show have departed (not laid off) since a new EP was named last year.

  • Bloomberg reports The Onion may be for sale, seriously. Onion Inc. has hired investment bank GCA Saccianer for a possible sale. Two students from the University of Wisconsin launched the satirical newspaper in 1988.

  • Romenesko reports Amol Sharma has been promoted to Media and Marketing bureau chief at the Wall Street Journal. “In a player-coach role, he has helped edit the group’s coverage of TV, advertising and publishing while covering big media companies.”

Mike Rowe: ‘CNN, Fox Not Just News Outlets, But Nonfiction Outlets’

141014111252-mike-rowe-smiling-hat-story-topCNN’s “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” host Mike Rowe was the guest for an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit, and took plenty of questions about various dirty jobs he’s worked in the past and the new job he’s working at CNN. Asked about the transition to being part of a news network, Rowe suggested the old concept of news programming is evolving. “It occurred to me that networks like FOX and CNN were not just news outlets, but fundamentally, nonfiction outlets,” Rowe said. “CNN, in particular, was very interested in exploring alternative forms of programming, very similar to DIRTY JOBS.”

Rowe says fitting into a nightly lineup that includes Anderson Cooper, Erin Burnett and Wolf Blitzer has been effortless. “They’ve been great to work with…And as long as headlines like Ebola, and ISIS, and terrorism, and natural disasters don’t completely dominate the landscape, I think there will be room for SOMEBODY’S GOTTA DO IT and other shows like it.”

CNN’s ‘Major, Major Projection’ Immediately Labeled ‘Not a Major Surprise’

IMG_1855Here’s the thing about dramatic music and full-screen wipes: they seem silly when you follow them up with an admission that, well, none of this was even a shred of a surprise. Take CNN’s call on control of the House of Representatives. CNN’s Anderson Cooper threw to Wolf Blitzer with a promise of a “big projection.”

Blitzer said it was, bigger than big, a “major, major projection” in the fight for control of the House. “Which party is coming out ahead? Get ready for that major projection RIGHT NOW.” And CNN rolled the full screen CNN PROJECTION graphic, after which Blitzer himself poured ice water all over the preceding thirty seconds of dramatic hype: “Not a major surprise by any means.”
